Stunning architecture... Definitely gonna be my fav residential towers in Malaysia after completion... Current fav is The Oval KL...

Hope they will do something with the parking podium to match the iconic towers above it...

Too bad these towers are built so far inland in a quiet residential area. If built on the Gurney coast, they would easily become the most photographed buildings in Penang.

Now, roughly two years after the initial projected opening date and a dozen years after the project was first conceptualised, all that grit and hard work is finally bearing fruit. Fortified with an unprecedented RM30mil in conservation works (a full quarter of the hotel’s total RM120mil cost), The Rice Miller Hotel & Godowns is physically complete.

Furnished with top-of-the-line in-room interactive technology, butler services and the hotel’s Rolls-Royce at guests’ disposal, the establishment offers the highest standards of service and amenities. Also on the premises is a fully-restored 1920s colonial godown which serves as a state-ofthe-art events centre and banquet hall that can accommodate 350 guests.

Lining the north side of the luxurious neoclassical hotel is The Carriageway, a cobblestone pathway housing retail outlets and five signature restaurants managed by the hotel. There is Kate at 9, featuring avant-garde cuisine in a restored 126-yearold Straits Settlements shophouse. A few steps away are Sweet Spot which offers confectionary delights; The Mill, a classic brasserie with international offerings; and Tray, a modern bistro with hearty fivecourse gourmet food trays that change daily. Rounding up the row of gastronomic delights is Zyp, an ultra-modern bar serving molecular cocktails and other one-of-a-kind modernist creations.

For Noraini, for whom The Rice Miller Project is the first venture out on her own, the experience has been extraordinary. “It has been one hell of a battle and one hell of a great learning exercise. We all walked into it perhaps stupidly – young and brave.

So do you guys know if the Rice Miller Hotel is opened yet? If not, when is the anticipated opening day?

Thank you. Having to redesign due to UNESCO heritage height restrictions, there had already been a delay previously. Then another delay from last year to this year. Not sure when it will be opened hopefully before Christmas so the area can be lit up nice for the cruise ship tourists.

I just hoped the custom nextdoor is located somewhere else nearby not in a heritage building. It spoils the surrounding, plus they obviously violated heritage conservation guideline to that particular building by not following heritage color scheme, making holes in the wall for aircond condenser, windows are not following heritage guideline and so on.

Is there any proposal for that custom building?

As far as I know, the whole row on the frontage of Gat Lebuh China belongs to the Feds. Therefore most parts of the Rice Miller restaurants, function halls and residences will be quite hidden behind them. Unless the Feds decide to sell those properties, no one can do anything about them. Agree that the Customs building is pretty badly kept and maintained, but then again, so are many small private business properties all throughout Georgetown. More strict guidelines should set a better standard. The Georgetown Dispensary building, however, looks pretty good, and so is the newly renovated Khazanah building across the street - I guess Khazanah needs to set a good standard since they are in charge of heritage preservation too.
