So what's the next supertall for Shanghai? Until now, when one was finished, the next one started (kind of).

There is still the White Magnolia Plaza, but not much else I know of.

I wonder if Shanghai's supertall race will eventually come back to life.

Slightly off topic but Hong Kong seems to have to come to a complete halt as regards supertalls and skyscrapers. I guess there's more space in other Chinese cities.

It's true the city only has/will have 4 real supertalls, at least in the near future. However they are some of the coolest supertalls I have ever seen so quality over quantity of course.

Yeah I noticed this too. Makes me a bit sad as I really love Hong Kong, but as far as tall construction goes it seems it's glory days are over..

And after the Shanghai Tower I think Shanghai will also enter such a phase, at least for the time being.

I think HK would still remain one of the best skylines in the world despite only having 2 400+s. I would prefer quality over quantity. Dare i say, there is a huge influx of "inferior" 300+s, and 400+s in Chinese second tier cities, they are building supertalls for the sake of superstalls. Look at the design of Tianjin Goldin Finance 117 for example.

As for Shanghai, i an content with the 3 supertalls in Lujiazui, i would much rather have more quality 200+s that would fill in the gaps of the skyline, making Lujiazui more dense.

All good things must come to an end, at least for a while.

I do envision the same thing happening in other Chinese cities as what happened to Hong Kong but honestly China has so many buildings in the 400 meter or above range that there really is nothing to complain about. It's like getting a billion dollars and complaining that you won't get any richer.

While here in the west NYC may be on fire it will cool off too eventually, and Chicago, despite some supertall proposals already has. A couple of other US cities are building supertalls or entering booms but booms cannot last forever, they come and go, especially one as large as China is currently experiencing.

Personally, i would much rather see Shanghai in the future 5 years to focus on developing street-level details. I would much rather see some high-quality towers or shopping malls that would bring more vibe to Shanghai.

For example, people would visit frequently visit Lujiazui for IFC Mall, but barely ever for SWFC. I hope Shanghai Tower's mall would bring Lujiazui more consumers, and more like Puxi.

I think after Magnolia plaza, we will be done with supertalls in Shanghai. I think what kix said is on point. They need to focus more on the ground level here in Shanghai and especially in Lujiazui. Pudong needs to bring things back to a more human scale, focus more on streetside retail and other amenities. The reason most people choose Puxi over Pudong is because there are much more amenities here. I was talking to my boss about this a while ago, and he shuddered at the thought of having an office in Pudong. Some of us laowais refer to Pudong as PuJersey.

I don't think we won't see new supertalls in the future. But not in the near future it seems.
