Eldoret City | City Gallery

The official town site of Eldoret itself started in 1910 with a Post Office on what was known to the white settlers as "Farm 64", "64" or "Sisibo" to the locals because, at that time it was 64 miles from the newly built Uganda Railway railhead at Kibigori. [3]Willy van Aardt owned the farm. Peter van Aardt, now living in England, is Willy's great grandson. The Central Lounge in Eldoret is all that remains of Willy's farm.

In 1908, the Eldoret area had been settled by Afrikaans-speaking South Africans who "trekked" there from Nakuru after a journey from South Africa by sea and by rail from Mombasa. Other European and Asian settlers and traders began arriving shortly afterwards.

When the governor decided to establish an administrative centre, the Post Office was renamed from "64" with the official town name as "Eldoret" in 1912.[2] Becoming an administrative centre caused an enormous increase in trade within the prospective city. A bank and several shops were built.[2]

Nice, Eldoret is growing fast and I guess they have started using the airport more frequently. Way to go!

Eldoret-Kampala pipeline compensation for March
Written by PAUL MWIJAGYE
Saturday, 28 February 2009
KAMPALA, UGANDA - The construction of the much awaited Eldoret-Kampala oil pipeline is hoped to begin in April.

Preparations are underway to compensate the people that will be affected by the project.

In an interview with EABW, the energy ministry's commissioner for petroleum, Ben Twodo said the survey had been completed and submitted to the chief government valuer. He, however, noted that since the handing over of the survey not much progress has been realized.
"The chief government valuer has done some work though not all and so far there is nothing that we can say will stop the commencement of the project," Twodo said.

On July 18, 2006 Tamoil East Africa won a 20-year concession to finance and extend the 320km oil pipeline from Eldoret to Kampala at a cost of $72 million.

The work has been postponed several times, hampering stable fuel supply to Uganda, a situation that has led to escalating prices.

A recent analysis of the economic indicators for the second half of 2008 reveals that in spite of the fall in international crude oil prices by over 70%, between early July 2008 and early August 2008, there has been no significant reduction in fuel prices in Uganda.

Average pump prices in Kampala for petrol and diesel remained as high as Shs2,650 and Shs2, 200 respectively in February, 2009.

In upcountry areas, the price is higher by about 15%-20%.

This has resulted in increased food prices, high commodity prices and transport costs which in turn contributed to high inflation rates. Food crops inflation rose to 33.7% in August from 20.5% in July 2008 on account of high transport costs.

The cost of transporting oil varies between $38 and $42 per cubic metre, an expense that is expected to decline significantly with completion of the project.

Tamoil has a 51% stake in the project, while Uganda and Kenya governments are holding an equal share of the remaining 49%.

Kenya pipeline link to Uganda oil fields proposed
Eric Watkins
OGJ Oil Diplomacy Editor

LOS ANGELES, Mar. 30 -- Kenya's Mombasa-to-Eldoret oil pipeline could eventually be extended to Uganda's Albertine rift basin—site of promising recent oil discoveries—once the line has been extended to Kampala, Uganda.

Habib Kagimu, chairman of Tamoil Uganda Ltd., which in 2006 won the tender to construct the 360-km pipeline extension from Eldoret, Kenya, to Kampala, said his firm's current plans also call for extending the pipeline from Kampala to the Albertine rift in Uganda to transport oil from fields there to the Port of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean for global export (see map, OGJ, Feb. 16, 2009, p. 34).

Echoing earlier statements by Ugandan officials, Kagimu confirmed, over Uganda's national WBS TV, that work on the often-delayed pipeline extension from Eldoret to Kampala will start in April and will take 15 months to complete, with a further extension of the line to the Rift area already in the planning stages.

"Our engineers have designed the pipeline in such a way that in the future, it will be able to transport oil from Uganda back to Mombasa for export," said Kagimu, who added that the pipeline eventually could also be extended from Kampala to Rwanda and Burundi.

There remains debate over the extension to the Albertine rift basin, however, as some Ugandan officials oppose the construction of the export link and instead propose retaining the oil to be refined in Uganda, a proposal that Tumoil and exploration firms Heritage Oil, and Tullow Oil reject as not feasible.

In January, Ugandan state media reported that Uganda and Kenya had formed a joint
coordination committee to fast-track the Eldoret-Kampala pipeline, which had been postponed several times since 2006.

The New Vision newspaper reported that harmonizing bilateral and international agreements defining legal, commercial, financial, taxation, transportation, and custom issues had delayed the pipeline project. According to the Ugandan energy ministry, however, most of these issues have been resolved, and it also expects work on the extension to Kampala to start in April.

Libya-based Tumoil, which in 2006 won the tender to construct the line, will hold a 51% stake in the pipeline, while Uganda and Kenya will jointly hold the remaining 49%.

Recent oil finds
The pipeline extension plans coincide with recent oil discoveries by Tullow Oil and Heritage Oil in blocks they operate and share in Uganda (OGJ Online, Mar. 27, 2009).

Heritage and Tullow hold interests in three licenses on the Ugandan side of the Lake Albert rift basin. Heritage is operator of Blocks 1 and 3A, holding a 50:50 stake with Tullow, while in Block 2 Tullow is operator with a 100% stake.

Tullow and Heritage earlier this month said that exploration in Uganda has shown reserves of at least 600 million bbl.
