Just saw this for the first time...
Pretty crazy, although I have to agree with the YouTube comments... This isn't really お笑い. |

Can anyone recommend any funny TV drama series I should watch?
I'm trying to improve my Japanese with them but something fun is most important. I've seen. Densha Otoko- Classic, good. Papa to musume 7nichi - rather funny and good, Kekkon dekinai otoko- really good, very funny guy, I can relate to the guy. My boss my hero- OK. A bit repetitive but has its moments. Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo - Strange but good. Like a Japanese version of the old British show "Mind Your Language". Wish there had been another series. Great Teacher Onizuka- Not so good, got bored after a few episodes Gokusen- I didn't like it, couldn't watch more than a few episodes |

The comedy is kind of weird and I don't know if people outside Japan like it. It's one of my favorite shows though. Why are you restricting it only to comedy? Other types can be fun too. |

I think Japanese comedy has become commercialized; tarentos can make monomane of a celeb if it pays some money, celebs participate in comedy shows after paying - everything for their PR. There was a recent discussion on the Downtown's fan club forum why comedy is becoming less funny and repetitive.

Is that really about Japanese comedy in general? The thread you linked to is more about ガキの使い, and specifically the 笑ってはいけない series. In that case, I would agree that the latest series aren't as good because it's gotten too formulaic. They need to come up with something new.
In general, I still enjoy the show itself, although I have to admit I haven't had an opportunity to watch it as frequently now as I used to. The Hamada Vegas show was pure gold... http://youtubeowaraitv.blog32.fc2.co...try-27862.html

Quote:
What GnT is special for is their usage of physical abuse in comedy, for which it is one of the most beloved Japanese comedy shows outside Japan. Previously, they were more active during the year, lots of batsu games, contests like Oogiri etc. But now they're just sitting and enjoying skits someone else created.
