KOZHIKODE: The city which is set to host several key events of the 35th national games next year is staring at a serious deficit in its sports infrastructure.

The proposed Rs 34-crore indoor stadium at Chevayur allotted for the district as part of the national games still remains on paper. Though five acres of land have been made available three years ago, the work on the project is yet to begin.

The construction of grand stand at the EMS Corporation Stadium, the venue for men's football matches, has also not yet taken off. The work on the new stadium at Medical College has been stalled for months and the renovation of the decades-old V K Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium is also lagging behind. All the projects have missed their deadlines and are mired in technical and procedural delays.

The delay in completing the works has rung alarm bells among the authorities. A Pradeep Kumar, MLA, said the slip-ups made by the contractors and design flaws were responsible for the enormous delays.

"All the major works in the district for the national games have been stalled. The national games secretariat has failed to monitor and complete the works. The football-cum-athletics stadium at the Medical College has serious design flaws and the work has now been stalled. The construction of grand stand at the corporation should have been completed by now, but it has not even started yet," he said.

The renovation works of V K Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium which is designated as venue for volleyball and Sepak Takraw matches has missed several deadlines. The contract awarded for Rs 3.2 crore was scheduled to be completed on December 2010.

District sports council president K J Mathayi said lack of coordination and technical lapses in the projects were responsible for the delays. "We do not know if the authorities will be able to finish the projects on time. The government should make an emergency review of the preparedness for the games or else the state will have to face the disgrace of not even having proper venues for the prestigious event," he said.

Work on pavilion at EMS corp stadium to begin on December 10

KOZHIKODE: The construction work of the grand stand pavilion at the EMS Corporation Stadium will begin on December 10 and will be completed on September 10, 2013. The decision was announced at a meeting of the officials of the National Games Secretariat -Kerala held with Kozhikode corporation mayor A K Premajam here on Monday.

N Mohankumar chief engineer, national games secretariat and team held discussion with mayor said that the work of the stadium will be completed within 10 months of the commencement of the work.

A Hyderabad-based company has been selected for the construction of the building which comprises grand stand pavilion and a two storey shopping complex. The estimated sum for the project is Rs 19.01 crores.

Around three thousand spectators can watch the match sitting in the grand stand once the first phase works of the pavilion completes. The work of the football cum athletics stadium at the Kozhikode Medical College with an estimated sum of Rs 10.4 crore will be completed in 2013, April while the work of the V K Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium with Rs.2.90 crore will complete March 2013.

The meeting decided not to take up the Rs 34-crore indoor stadium at Chevayur for the time being which was allotted for the district as part of the national games.

S Kishan Chand, executive engineer of national games secretariat said that the grand stand at the corporation stadium is being planned in a way to meet the standard of the international games. "There will be media room, VIP room, doctor's rooms, dressing room, official room and other facilities at the pavilion. There will also be shopping complex which would help generate income for the corporation," he said.

District sports council president K J Mathai said that he has brought the issue of absence of a staircase to connect the 6,000 square feet hall in the third floor of the Medical College Football cum athletics stadium. "The authorities have agreed to provide the staircase t," he said. The stadium will serve its purpose only if the National Games Secretariat convert the 6,000 square feet hall into dormitory," he said.

Is there any drawing available on how the stadium will look like, after construction of the grand stand? A very wrong place for an international stadium.. Ideally they should have identified space on Paroppady - Parambil Bazar road.. There are lot of vacant spaces available there..

Have any one of your immediate friends and family studied in Silver Hills. Make this suggestion to them and see their reaction. The region below the foothills of the Police Kunnu gets inundated in water every rainy season.
During one of the floods in the 1990's the whole area was evacuated by the Army.
I would vouch to build a stadium at the site of one of the hills that is brought down for construction activities. the entire eco system of the place would have damaged already anyways.

My dear friend, I have studied in Silver Hills.. I was not talking about bring down a hill and constructing a stadium.. One whole side of the road are open areas (erstwhile paddy fields) where a few townships have come up.. If we construct an international stadium there, the whole area will get a facelift and more importantly downtown Calicut and Mavoor road will get decongested.. As a second step, Moffusil stand should also be shifted from Mavoor Road to somewhere near Medical College.. The road from Medical College to Mavoor will be an ideal place for that.. Monorail can start from there as well..

Which one is the final plan?? Looks like one is a cost-cut model of the other. And that looks like a three tier cowshed to me.

KOZHIKODE: Malabar Sports Academy heaves a sigh of relief following a high court directive to the state to hold discussion with the Sports Council , patrons of the Academy and the contractors for the speedy completion of the construction of sports complex attached to the Academy.

The court has directed to hold a meeting and resume the work in three months while considering a petition filed by P T Augustine, convenor of the Sports Academy.

The academy, situated at Pulloorampara,was promised a sports complex during the tenure of the previous government. Though an estimate of Rs 4.5 crore was prepared and budget allocation was made, the construction could not be completed owing to technical reasons.

The contractor, who was entrusted the work, stopped the work midway as his payments were due. The contractor also had approached the court seeking the intervention of court in settling his pending bills.

The government had allocated Rs 10 lakh for the sports complex. Besides, the sports council had also earmarked Rs 50 lakh for the construction of the stadium complex in the name of late MLA of Thiruvambadi, Mathai Chacko. The plan was to set up the complex to help the students who are undergoing training at the Malabar Sports Academy.
