I lived there as a kid. NW Washington DC is really lovely. The bits on the DC side of Western Ave and Chevy Chase Circle are so homey. Parts of Rock Creek Park reach into these neighborhoods -- a really wonderful resource for any city to have. The only thing I've really seen that rivals Rock Creek Park is Hampstead Heath in London, though I'd guess that there's much much less crime problem with the Heath than with Rock Creek. Connecticut Ave is great too, with it's long, gradual promenade from suburbia into central DC. Some great old apartment blocks along the way, as well as small cafes -- a bit like Manhattan in those respects. DC is so diverse really -- much like NYC and London that way.
I went there back in June...the houses there are so beautiful, and visiting the Mall area is always a fun thing to do. I also was able to hit Georgetown for a tiny bit of time. Most of my time in the DC area was in the suburbs though.
Haven't changed my profile yet, but in the last 24 hours the location has now become Wilmington DE.
