The developer just sued the gym and is seeking eviction due to "hundreds of thousands of dollars in delinquent rent and fees" according to TB bizjournals.

A light would actually make that a nightmare, come to think of it. Plus, you'd have two lights within 50 yards of each other.

For the gym issue, the gym owners wanted to rip up the courtyard to allow the flow of traffic out to Madison. The board and city met and agreed to zone the courtyard for its current use. Traffic patterns and rent are the public reasons for them leaving, but it's been contentious for a couple of years now for a couple other reasons between them and the property managers.

That being said, I will miss the gym. I loved working out there, and hope another gym moves into that space very quickly. When we talk live/work/play, having a good sized, functioning gym the majority can walk to is a must for numerous residents.
I would imagine a number of buildings have gyms within them...Victory does for sure...

They have very small (except the Slade), limited, fitness rooms, not gyms. Classes at powerhouse are a very big draw as well. Two treadmills, an elliptical and 30lb weights don't make a gym.

Yeah, the spin classes at Powerhouse were really popular. Powerhouse also had a nutrition shop and smoothie bar (I believe) inside. No small gym could match or get close to what Powerhouse provided.

Be awesome if Powerhouse was incorporated into something like the parking garage with the USF project. Add a couple floors of parking for the gym, give the gym 2 or 3 floors on the bottom, Add something to the garage so it doesn't look like just a 10 story parking garage, and heck, maybe even add a green roof on the top for yoga and a running track. Considering that Vinik wants his project to be a Health District of sorts, Powerhouse would fit right in.

Isn't Orange Theory still in Pierhouse?

Plus it seems like Powerhouse wasn't paying rent:

^Orange Theory is a cardio-only studio. It has a nitch, but doesn't make up for a full gym.

The main problem with sustaining a gym of that size is that it needs some serious membership to overlay the costs. Most residential buildings in the area offer some form of a gym (GCAK is dismal, but its still there) to the average joe who just wants a treadmill or to lift some weights.

Obviously thats not true for all, and i know people that lived outside DT that go there, so take what i said with a grain of salt. I cant imagine what their rent bill came out to every month though.

Closing the gap...won't be long before some more Encore development and perhaps some just south of it to unify this part of town.
