Tomorrow will surely be a busy day. We don't currently have a Vinik thread, just one for the hotel.

Reveal Press Conference: 11AM EST at the Marriott Waterside
LIVESTREAM: http://www.foxsports.com/florida/sto...istrict-121714

Here's the night-before article:

Quote:
Two pivotal days to shape Tampa Bay's future
Grayson Kamm, WTSP 12:34 p.m. EST December 16, 2014

Tampa, Florida -- We are about to enter two pivotal days that will shape Tampa Bay for generations to come. We want to give you a heads up about two major things to watch out for.

The first comes from Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik. He owns 30 connected acres in the southern section of Downtown Tampa, and on Wednesday, he's going to announce his vision for all that land.

Planners tell me something like this almost never happens in an American city today. A whole section of Downtown -- with one owner -- laid out with a new master plan, backed by billions of investment dollars.

Let me break down for you what this means.
More here:

http://www.wtsp.com/story/news/local...ture/20470387/

Thread will be updated tomorrow as news comes in. Speculate away until press conference time.

I know I'll be watching the stream and on here at 11AM tomorrow.

We had a master thread for his project, but it was locked and wasn't replaced?

Nope. Unless I didn't search hard enough discussion has since been taking place in the Channelside, USF, Vinik Hotel and "Vinik buys more land" threads, separately.

Took the day off from work tomorrow, to exclusively devote a full day to watch, as well as follow this Vinik stuff.

It's because it was a temporary thread until this very announcement FF. I closed it because it got off track too quickly (I think after Page 2 it got derailed).

After tomorrow's announcement, we need to try to have meaningful threads on the Vinik plan. I don't like to see one dump-all thread, but as needed, we can have a few different threads depending on which tracts of land may get developed first.

The existing Channelside Bay Plaza thread can remain in use for anything relating to that project.

Discussion on the USF Med School (if that indeed is 100% confirmed, which it likely will be) can remain in the USF thread for now, as it will keep that thread from going dead.

Quick contest for everyone...

How tall do you think Vinik's tallest envisioned building is?

Thanks to the FAA, anything over 30 stories will be gravy.

The hotel is already 23, and that was one of his best lots from a design perspective to make something truly tall.

A couple of other notes, not sure if these have been posted anywhere else on here yet:

Quote:
Vinik's executives also announced a new restaurant will open at Channelside in January, but the name won't be revealed until the news conference. It will be the first new tenant at the outdoor mall in 3½ years.
Quote:
One aspect of the plan calls for building a continuous greenspace along the water to connect the convention center to Channelside Bay Plaza.

So basically add some green space to the lot next to the Plaza. Hopefully that is not the most exciting thing to come out haha.

He's sitting on the Channelside shops and its parking lot for a few years, while he does other stuff first.

Market permitting, his project is going to take a number of years.

About the greenspace... That's great to hear that he's interested in fixing old screw ups while developing his land and making money. He's not the first developer around here with that admirable perspective, but they're rare and he's probably the highest profile one ever.

Vinik is presenting to the County Commission board now -- but so far I am bit underwhelmed. 4 or 5 stories. 300 residential units over an 30+ acre area. Yet, thousands and thousands of parking spaces. Maybe I'll change my mind at 11, but so far I am bit disappointed.

Some numbers:

Quote:
Vinik officials revealed some specific numbers behind the project: It will create 1.1 million square feet of new office space; 660,000 square feet of residential space; 575,000 square feet of hotel and meeting space; 330,000 square feet for USF's new downtown medical school and heart institute; 250,000 square feet of ground-level retail space for shops and restaurants; a 50,000 square-foot central energy and cooling plant; and up to five new parking garages with more than 5,000 spaces.

The estimated price tag: $1.07 billion. The project's primary financier is Cascade Investment LLC, the personal investment fund of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
And some other stuff:

Quote:
• Team Vinik wants to extend Tampa's Riverwalk to the Tampa Bay History Center by adding a boardwalk along the mangroves of Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park. That waterfront boardwalk would also add space for boats and other recreational water uses.

• The plan calls for adding a small waterfront park to the back end of the Channelside Bay Plaza parking. The Tampa Port Authority on Tuesday approved leasing the mall's parking garage and lot to Vinik's team, which is already planning to hold events like a farmer's market in the new park.

• A major office building is in the works along Channelside Drive between N Morgan and Jefferson streets. Team Vinik hopes that will be the site of a major corporate relocation, and act as a bookend to the project along with the USF medical school building, which will go up at Channelside Drive and S Meridian Avenue. Another office tower is planned for Channelside and Old Water Street.

• The plan calls for Team Vinik to fix downtown Tampa's confusing and interrupted street grid. Old Water Street would be extended north to connect with Cumberland Avenue. Ball Street and Cumberland would also be extended east to connect to Meridian, completing the city grid. Awkward street segments like a diagonal segment of Brorein Street would disappear.
