Hard to say. They've done a mix of heights locally.

Looks like this is moving forward...

Miami-based Related Group closed Friday on its $11.81 million purchase of a 8.5 acre tract in the 52-acre master planned community Westshore Marina District. Related previously announced plans for a 396-unit luxury apartment complex on the site at the Tampa end of the Gandy Bridge.
...
Related Group, the first company to close on a tract in the district, expects to start construction of the apartments next February and start leasing in August 2018.

What is going on with the port? Is this port land? Will this help stop the trains at 4am blowing their horns. Just curious because it is terrible.

I realize it's only 4 stories but they expect to start construction February 2018 and lease by August 2018???

Edit - from the link it looks like the article meant to say it's starting constriction this February (meaning now) because here's the picture in the article:

This is the project near Gandy, not the Port of Tampa.

Actually, that's an even older photo. That is probably from 2007 or 2008 when the original New Port was trying to get started, but before it flopped. I noticed immediately that the old trail bridge is in the background and it has since been demolished.

But yeah, the article probably has the dates incorrect.

Wait till you see the condo portion of this project. If the plan is still the same since last time I saw it, it's impressive and very modern.

Actually, it appears as the date is right for when construction is supposed to start on the Related's rental portion. Here's more information on the project. Also, I find it encouraging they mention "condo towers," which likely means the entire project won't be composed of just short, apartment buildings.

The waterfront luxury rentals will be developed in partnership with Related Group, a Miami real estate development firm known to many in the Tampa area for its waterfront residential project on the site of the former Tampa Tribune headquarters. Daniels says an unnamed “Top-10 national builder” is also coming onboard to construct the community. Pricing for the residential units is yet to be determined.

Daniels expects brisk development efforts on the Westshore Marina District.

“You’ll be surprised how quickly this moves,” he says. “We don’t have 1,750 of the same residential units – we’re mixing it up to have townhomes, condo towers, retail and restaurants, so there will be demand for what we’re building.”

BTI Partners closed on the land deal in early February 2017 and expects to begin construction on the marina community soon.

“People will be able to drive into the community and see landscaping within eight months,” Daniels says. “Construction begins on luxury rental units in early to mid 2018.” A build-out date is not specified, but Daniels says the community will be constructed in phases and is expected to reach completion quickly.

Towers could be 7 or 8 stories depending on the author...

An update:

South Tampa waterfront community to rise along with Selmon Expressway Extension
Quote:
Since 2015, BTI has been successfully marketing the site to builders:

• Last month, Miami-based Related Group bought 8.5 acres near the corner of Gandy and Bridge Street where it is about to start construction on 396 apartments. Nearby will be two restaurants, accessible from Gandy and the water, to be operated by a company that already has "multiple'' restaurants in the bay area, Daniel said.

• Another "well- known'' apartment builder — Daniel won't disclose the name — is expected to close in May or June on 12 acres fronting South Westshore and Tyson Street. It plans 350 units.

• A "top 10 national home builder'' is under contract for two parcels where it plans a total of 161 townhomes.

BTI is keeping about eight waterfront acres to develop a pair of condo towers, each about 16 stories with ground-floor shops. A third tower might be added later along with shops, a cafe and hotel.
This is the biggest part of the entire project IMO. Like I've said above I've seen preliminary renders of the condo portion of the project and it is very impressive. Unlike Westshore Yacht Club these towers are not Mediterranean revival, they're very modern and sort of similar to a few of Related Group's Miami projects. All three towers are planned for the strip of land that extends from the mainland.

One of Tampa Bay's prime waterfront areas took another major step toward redevelopment Friday as WCI Communities bought 2.35 acres in Westshore Marina District.
...
WCI, which developed the nearby Westshore Yacht Club, is under contract to buy another 9.5 acres of waterfront land by the end of the year. Tentative plans call for additional townhomes.

In the article it mentions that WCI developed the Westshore yacht club, but IIRC they are still building smaller condo buildings there. In addition, they have space for an originally planned condo tower so I kind of wonder what their long term plans are for the rest of that property.

TAMPA — Related Development LLC, a Miami-based company, was approved for a $52 million loan to build a luxury apartment tower in the Westshore Marina District.
LOL - "luxury apartment tower". The article goes on to say that the building will be four stories.

TAMPA — More than a decade after plans to develop a vacant waterfront tract were first announced, a new rendering finally gives a hint of what Westshore Marina District will ultimately look like.
BTI Partners, master developer of the $600 million district, has started an "interest list" of potential buyers in the 16-story Marina Pointe tower overlooking Tampa Bay.
