Subway travellers hit by third day of delays

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/s...6508n.21266034

Quote:

Cowcaddens station remained closed this morning as work continued to repair a section of the tunnel wall running to Buchanan Street.

Last night, the inner circle was re-opened, although Cowcaddens station is still closed.

However, passengers travelling on the Subway, which carries 40,000 people every day, will not be able to get on or off at Cowcaddens on the inner circle.

Restrictions will also stay in place on the outer circle.

Two shuttle trains are running on the outer circle, one from Govan to St George's Cross, stopping at all intermediate stations.

A second train will run from West Street to Ibrox, stopping at each station in between.

SPT said trains on the outer circle would not stop at Bridge Street, St Enoch and Buchanan Street because it would put too much pressure on the transport system and increase journey times.

From 7am today, SPT was also running extra coaches from St George's Cross, Shields Road and Hillhead to Buchanan Street.

Services were affected after a problem was discovered with the tunnel wall during checks on the Subway on Monday.

A statement from SPT said: "Cowcaddens station remains closed. The inner circle is in operation and a reduced Subway service is running on the Outer Circle from Govan to St George's Cross and West Street to Ibrox.

"Free shuttle buses are also running currently from St George's Cross Subway to Buchanan Street via Cowcaddens.

"We would like to again thank all our customers for their patience during this time."

The last major disruption to hit the Subway came in 2009 when work to build the M74 extension led to an 11-hour shutdown of the entire system. Work on a section of the extension was halted over fears piling work has caused cracks in some Subway tunnels.

On 24 March 1977, cracks were noticed in the roof of Govan Cross station, leading to suspension of services until May 2.

A £1.3million programme to improve the Subway's underground tunnels was approved last year by SPT.

The system is also undergoing a £300million renovation project, which will include driverless trains.

The Subway opened on December 14, 1896 and is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro.

Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its twin circular lines were never expanded.

Meanwhile, as reported in later editions of yesterday's Evening Times, rail passengers travelling to work on the Cathcart Circle also faced delays due to a signalling problem.

A temporary line closure was put in place between Pollokshields East and Mount Florida, at 9pm last night, while Network Rail engineers carried out cable repairs.

The line was expected to re-open today.

I really wish Scotrail had went for raised blue lettering or something, every station with the massive block of blue just looks awful!

Anger grows as Subway delays into fourth day

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/a...6691n.21283509

Quote:
Bosses have promised Glasgow's Subway system will fully reopen by tomorrow.

But, following days of delays, passengers are demanding answers as Cowcaddens station stayed shut four days after a tunnel fault sparked safety fears.

Cowcaddens and Buchanan Street stations were both closed by the problem, but Buchanan Street has since reopened.

However, passengers are furious as Subway bosses failed to give updated details about repair timescales.

An SPT spokeswoman said Cowcaddens would reopen on Saturday "at the latest".

But at St George's Cross station one passenger, who asked not to be named, said: "The delays are ridiculous.

"If we had any idea what was going on then we might be more sympathetic.

"If there is a fault in the tunnel then they should be saying exactly what is wrong and how long it will take to fix.

"Instead we have been going day to day altering our journeys."

Travellers using the system, which carries 40,000 people each day, are still not able to get on or off at Cowcaddens on the inner circle.

Restrictions are also in place on the outer circle, with a limited service running from Govan to St George's Cross.

Shuttle buses were in place from St George's Cross station to Buchanan Street, stopping at Cowcaddens, and from Buchanan Street to Shields Road via Bridge Street.

The problem with the tunnel wall was found during checks on Monday.

The SPT spokeswoman said structural engineers were in their final phases of tunnel safety checks.

SPT said the inner circle would be operating a frequent service.

It added: "Cowcaddens station remains closed.

"The inner circle is in operation, stopping at all stations apart from Cowcaddens.

"A reduced service is running on the outer circle from Govan to St George's Cross."

A free shuttle bus service was in place from St George's Cross to Buchanan Street via Cowcaddens until 11.30pm last night.

A shuttle bus service was also in operation from Buchanan Street to Shields Road via Bridge Street station until 7pm.

These buses will remain in service today.

Earlier in the week a shuttle train was running from West Street to Ibrox but this was stopped yesterday.

Subway bosses advised passengers to use the inner circle instead.

SPT said trains on the outer circle would not stop at Bridge Street, St Enoch and Buchanan Street because it would put too much pressure on the transport system.

A £1.3million programme to improve the Subway's tunnels has been under way since last year.

The system is also undergoing a £300m renovation project, which will include driverless trains.

We want answers NOW!

Never mind the fact that accurately organising radiography, engineers and other things that go hand in hand with all that is going to be near impossible at such short notice. Typical thick mob mentality...

Agree with you about the block blue signage. Piss poor.

Quite disappointed with this little cul de sac. It could be vastly improved.
I presume this is a temporary fix untill the full station rebuild.

The pavement in front of Dow's - a very short stretch - should be renewed.
We now know such things can be quickly done since Hillhead Station

There was talk of pedestrianising it. It would be lovely to breeze out of Queen Street station and onto West George Street or through Dundas Lane into Buchanan Street without having to dodge taxis. There were some artist's drawings a while ago showing a nice new canopy as well.

I'm not surprised that so many natives of Edinburgh who have summoned up the courage to finally visit Glasgow halt on reaching the above side entrance and immediately journey back homewards, writing the whole expedition off as a complete act of folly.

SUBWAY OPERATING IN FULL

This should make the Monday commute a lot easier for some of us.

http://www.spt.co.uk/2013/06/subway-operating-in-full/

Quote:

SPT recognise that it has been a very difficult week for passengers who rely on the Subway and we are very grateful for your patience. We have been focusing on getting the system fully reinstated whilst making sure the safety of passengers and staff is always our priority.

Specialist engineers have been on site dealing with a repair to the tunnel lining at Cowcaddens. That work has taken longer than expected and keeping the Subway operational while that was happening has proved a challenge.

The system is now operating in full and we would like to thank you again for bearing with us – we really do appreciate your patronage.

Please note that, from 29 June, Discovery, 10 and 20 journey tickets will no longer be available to buy.

How much will they cost

Adult

Child

Concession

Single

£2.60 £1.30 £1.20

All day
£3.80 £1.90 N/A

7 day

If you are unable to use up those journeys by 29 June, you can take your existing ticket to any of our Subway stations and be offered a replacement smart season ticket (replacement offered will be an equivalent or better value ticket).

What about other tickets like DayTripper and Roundabout?

DayTripper and Roundabout tickets can still be purchased from SPT Travel Centres and staffed rail stations only. Customers are asked to show these tickets to Subway staff during the smart switch over period.

Unlimited travel during a particular time period is a really nice idea and will hopefully encourage more use of the Subway. Good job, SPT! They do seem to be getting everything right with this modernisation.

A little while ago SPT were talking about two distinct varieties of smartcard ticket: this type, and also an Oyster-style system whereby you're issued with a single card and you charge it up with value as necessary. I wonder when that's coming?

Why do the two need to be mutually exclusive? You can do all that on an Oyster anyway. Plus if you spend so much in a day the charge freezes at the daily travelcard rate.

If there was ever anything to be copied wholesale from TFL it's Oyster. It would be cheaper buying the existing prebuilt system than cooking up our own fuckup riddled (mark my words) effort. Never mind the lunacy of imposing a two tier local and national system!

Still, anything for a political point...

The hope is that products carried on SPT's card will also be able to carried on the Saltire Card. Same goes for First and Stagecoach if they decide to develop their own cards. Getting the big two to opt in could be a challenge.

I think the DfT have said that all new smart ticketing schemes have to be ITSO-compliant - Oyster isn't. Not sure how much of a say the DfT have on this matter in Scotland but we're probably best going with the national standard anyway.

And yip, I can't see the bus companies coming quietly. SPT were asking for the power to force them to adopt the smartcard. Now there's an idea that appeals to me. It's nice to see a public body bare its teeth.

If we end up with a different smartcard for every public transport mode and operator, I will weep in despair.
