The deal with Council has probably already been done (refer earlier posts). This is about Southern water charges for hydraulic infrastructure upgrades, which is not the Hobart City Council.

As I said, the deal with Council has already been done and has nothing to do with headworks charged by Southern water - read post#3:-

Hobart City Council is set to give Mr Kalis rates relief for an undisclosed period of time.

The rates package will potentially eventuate in millions of dollars in rates offered for free.

Alderman Marti Zucco said the council made no apologies for offering the rates incentive to Mr Kalis, saying the financial implications of losing Myer from the central business district would far outweigh the discount.

A report obtained by the Mercury under Right to Information laws last year showed that if Myer pulled out of Hobart's city centre it would cost up to 500 jobs and annual turnover in the city would drop by more than $80 million.

The economic report said a subsequent drop in property values and a flow-on loss of inner-city retailers would cost the council $1 million directly in rates if Myer packed its bags and left.

"In actual fact, we are not losing rates but in fact protecting the CBD and greater Hobart from what can only be described as the death of the city," Ald Zucco said.

Myer man with a plan

THE chairman of retail giant Myer said the company remained committed to CBD retailing and to getting a new flagship store up and running in Hobart as soon as possible.

Myer chairman Paul McClintock addressed a meeting of the Institute of Company Directors yesterday and will today inspect the site where the company's new $100 million store will rise from the ashes of a 2007 fire.

"My visit to Hobart is part of the ongoing commitment of Myer to be back in the CBD as quickly as possible," Mr McClintock told the Mercury.

"It's all part of saying our CBD stores are important to us.

I think the Melbourne store is a fantastic store, the redevelopment of that store was a beautiful job.

We have Sydney and Melbourne both brand new, Adelaide being rebuilt and Hobart will be new.

"We'll have a very fresh set of CBD offerings and that's something I'm keen on.

"We have a range of product, particularly in the fashion area, which we believe has to be available in the CBD and we have to provide a greater range in the CBD.

"But wherever you are in a capital city you should be able to go to a first-class store and Hobart shouldn't be left out."

The redevelopment of the Hobart Myer site has been beset by delays, and the store is not expected to open for trading until Christmas next year.

Mr McClintock said the slow progress had been frustrating as he believed a high-quality department store was a critical element of a vibrant city retail sector.

"I'm still convinced that department stores are an essential part of the mix. Hobart is a good example," he said.

"We held a presence here but we haven't got the quality offering here we would like and we're obviously keen to get back.

"It's been disappointing. We'd obviously hoped that we would now be pretty close to reopening that store, but it will be a great store when it's done."

Mr McClintock said the retail sector faced continual challenges, including the competition from the internet and poor consumer sentiment.

"Most of the good retailers are saying there is some stability there, but there is very little growth and I don't think there is going to be a lot of growth until consumer sentiment picks up," he said.

Thanks for the update On Y Va. Lets all hope Southern Water sorts its self out and does a quick deal with Kallis to get this project plowing ahead on full steam rather than limping along as it is at the present!

Hobart observations

Get this thing going, and the RHH! I live in Adelaide now and, although it has a reputation for suffering from poor economic growth, at least major projects seem to get off the ground much quicker than in Tas. The Adelaide skyline is a forest of cranes right now. But when I visited Hobart last November, despite the doom and gloom, there were very few vacant shops and not many 'to let' signs outside offices. Maybe Tassie's problems are regional. Unemployment in the NW is about 12%, it's around 8% in the North, so given a statewide average of 7.5% it must be lower in the South. Maybe that's why Hobart seemed to be fairly prosperous, to me anyway. When I went to JB HiFi and Dick Smith in the city there were long queues waiting for service, Target was packed and Eastlands was quite busy. Some of the new prestige retailers in C & F Arcade had plenty of customers too.
Just a thought.

I thnink you are right pearcey. Hobart does not seem to suffer as much as the rest of Tasmania - they do say that when a city hits a population of 250,000 (Greater Hobart can't be far off that) it becomes self sustaining. But I am predicting that by Christmas this year there will be at least two tower cranes on the skyline (Bathurst Street carpark and Myer Centre) and possibly one more on the RHH site. So its not all doom and gloom.

I suspect you are right Chris18. The deal with Southern Water seems to be the last real sticking point and I bet Hutchinsons are keen to mobilise their crew. I reckon Southern Water are coming under a fair bit of pressure to sort this problem.

We can't be far away from a full on start now.

I love the spy cam Tony, it seems to be working great and it's funny walking past and see it in the window.

Only thing I think the top part will be cut off, and the hotel levels will be out of frame. (wouldn't expect to see the hotels part anyway)

In the pic we can see the monster scale of it compared to the surrounding 3 level buildings.

Something like this I imagine, but it's probably even higher.

Still, we must be getting close now!
