I am impressed with Durham, as well...love the industrial look. Nate...those are some fabulous shots over the Quarter...truly rare shots that anyone would expect to see from a North American city.

The Charlotte skyline is definitely more impressive from ground level. I see the skyline from a plane window nearly every week, and you're right, it's just not that impressive from above. Much love goes out to Charlotte from here, too. After all, it's my home. And I think it may have a better aerial presence in the next couple of years given the amount of projects.

Glad you guys liked the Durham aerials. The downtown area has a great wealth of historic buildings, much more than people realize from looking at the usual photos of the city. The problem isn't just the "poor" skyline - for the size of the city - but the fact that many older buildings are underutilized, if used at all. At the street level, the experience is pleasant, but a few high-rises would definitely help the city's image.

I like Durham's old street layout; the current one has been confusing. I'm glad they're redirecting everything. It's a shame some of those great buildings in the old photographs are parking lots now. The sooner someone fills those lots up, the better.

Incredible Durham. Charlotte really needs to get rid of those gaps and shocking surface lots. Just appalling.

great pics of Asheville! Do you have any pics from the west? Not focusing on the skyline, but the mountain views are the most impressive looking the other way in my opinion.

I never realized that Durham had been bisected so badly by the freeway. Even in an aerial, you can really see how cleanly that 6-8 lane road slices through the center of the old street grid. What a damned shame.

Toronto is an easy #3 for me as far as photos are concerned. I have no idea what the real demographics are.

You think that's bad, check Charlotte out sometime, they pretty much tore down everything and built a freeway. It's awful.

I agree with the ranking for Atlanta. The city would have to build a lot of sky scrapers to make up for the space between buildings, or demolish and rebuild which isn't always a good idea. I also agree with your ranking for Charlotte.
The city has potential with all the construction and proposals they have right now, but there are way too many parking lots in the uptown area.
