Lynchburg, Virginia Downtown Revitalization Before and After

As many of you know from the thread on Lynchburg Developments, downtown Lynchburg has witnessed an incredible renaissance over the past four years.

With just over $190 million in public/private investment since 2012 and nearly 500 new loft apartments (94% average occupancy rate) created through the adaptive reuse of 10 historic mills and warehouses and two new build projects the population of downtown has skyrocketed from 367 in 2010 to just over 1,000 today. Restaurants and businesses are following suit. Seven new restaurants and taphouses have opened in the past seven months with more in the works and they are all busier than ever.

Pacific Life brought their east coast headquarters to downtown Lynchburg in 2016 bringing 300 new jobs. A new $25 million hotel restoration project with rooftop bar is underway and buildings all along Church, Commerce, and Main Streets are being fixed up. The $5.8 million Lower Bluffwalk completed in 2015 has spurred just over $30 million in developments and the construction of 200 loft apartments.

Downtown Lynchburg has come a long way in the past four years from a largely dilapidated area void of visitors and residents with lots of vacant buildings to one of the trendiest and most desirable areas to live and visit in the entire metro area.

All but two photos (two noted as Google Images in photos below) are by me in my time living here in downtown Lynchburg (five years) which shows the transition of several buildings from what they looked like before the wave of revitalization gained momentum to what they look like today. I have noted the year each image was taken in parentheses.

Cool stuff. That thing on the cliffside almost looks like a monastery, or something.
