The 7 star resort "The RAVIZ" is nearing completion. It is expected to be open to the public by Onam this year (possibly on 18th Aug). Some information can be viewed at http://kollamcity.in/theraviz.

Another point I am looking at is to get the details of exhibitions and events that are in pipeline. Do you (or anyone) know of any URLs from where I can get an update of this?

Ochira Kali festival begins

KOLLAM: The annual Ochira Kali festival began at the Ochira Padanilam (battle field), 32 km from here, on Thursday.

Commemorating the historic medieval-age battle between the erstwhile kingdoms of Kayamkulam and Ambalapuzha, the Ochira Kali festival is held on the first two days of the Malayalam month of Mithunam.

The festival is linked to the Ochira Parabrahma temple and marks the advancement of the monsoon. It involves a mock battle fought ceremoniously to the sound of drums from the water-logged ‘padanilam' close to the temple.

Oachira Kali is a mock battle between two groups through the marital art of Kalaripayattu – they recreate the battles fought more than 300 years ago on the paddy fields of Oachira by the then Kayamkulam King and Venad King.

The ritual involves display of Kalaripayattu – the martial art of Kerala. Different groups representing different villages show their expertise in the marital art on the two fields set up for Oachira Kali.
The warriors that participate in the ritual undergo a 41-day vrat.
Before the start of the Oachira Kali, the presiding deity in the temple, Lord Shiva is taken out in a procession on the Vrishabha Vahana. The warriors that are participating in the ritual follow the procession. The procession ends on the field where the mock fight and the display of Kalaripayattu take place.
The mock fight between different groups start after witnessing the Sri Krishna parunthu or eagle flying atop the field.
In the evening, the warriors pledge to return next day and take leave for the day.
On the second day afternoon there is again display of the various movements in Kalaripayattu. At the end of the day, prizes are distributed to the best warriors.
Oachira Temple is a unique temple in South India, as there are no major temple structures. The deities are worshipped under banyan trees.

An innovative way to exhibit a noble message - An exhibition that took place last week

Two two four represents the 224 countries on earth and they are depicted as 224 plastic pots filled with sea water. Plastic waste is the biggest threat water sources face and the aim is to present the gravity of the drinking water problem triggered by plastic waste, said Mr. Guruprasad, a graduate from the Fine Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram.

If the situation continues, the quality of all water sources will soon become unfit for drinking like the water in the plastic pots, said Mr. Guruparasd who works as a police constable.

In fact drinking water shortage is the biggest problem the human race has started facing. Yet people are averse to protecting and conserving even the available drinking water sources. There is even an apathetic attitude to spreading awareness on the need to conserve drinking water sources.

Mr. Guruprasad said that a few years ago no one even imagined that drinking water will have to be purchased as a commodity. But today even in water sources rich Kerala, purchasing drinking water has become a way of life. Its causes are human inflicted, he said.

If the situation continues, drinking water scarcity will affect all the 224 countries. Mr. Guruprasad said that instead of an art gallery he selected a public place to exhibit the art because its message has to reach all sections of society. The sculpture also depicts a human form sitting under a water tap begging for drinking water and a crow on the tap competing with man for water. But water only trickles from the tap. This is in spite of the fact that there are 224 water filled pots there.

Floating Shopping Experience - Triveni Superstore to hit the city and inland backwaters in Kollam

For those who stay on the banks of Kallada River and Ashtamudi lake, a new Floating Triveni Store will be opened on 20th June 2011 by State Cooperative Minister Mr.C N Balakrishnan. The Floating Triveni Supermarket, introduced in 2009 June 7, is the first of its kind in the World. The floating supermarket coming in Kollam is the 3rd of its kind, the other 2 being introduced in Kuttanad. This is a unique venture and let us hope that Consumerfed will soon start many such floating malls in Kerala.

The inauguration function will be held at the shore near KEL, Kundara.

The mall was designed by the University of Cochin’s naval department. The 1000 sq.feet boat was built at a dock in Kochi at a cost of Rs.50 lakh. The ultra modern “Fibre Steel Laminated Ferro Cement” technology is used to built this boat. Cement was mixed with certain polymers and reinforced with steel to build the boat, which is anti—corrosive. A solar panel was added to light the boat and power the billing machine. The boat is facilitated with Internet facility also to control the prices of commodities from Head office and Regional offices of Consumer Fed.

The floating Triveni Super Store, which sells everything a home needs including refrigerators and TV sets at subsidised rates, is the brainchild of Ex. State Cooperative Minister G. Sudhakaran” . Kerala’s tourism department is very happy with the Consumerfed initiative as it catches the attention of tourists visiting the backwaters of Kerala, an area that ranks above the Taj Mahal in National Geographic Traveller’s best destinations of the world.

“Ever since the launch of the floating mall in June last year, it has become a tourist attraction,” says M. Shivshankar, director, Kerala Tourism.

The boat is lined with shelves full of grain to perfumes and health drinks to shampoos. The villages on the banks of river/lake cannot access the mainland except through boats. A Triveni store official said the timings of the boat’s arrival in each village is announced beforehand, and villagers look forward to it.

The mall is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For safety reasons, only 20 people are allowed on board at a time.

“Ours is a supermarket,” says Reji R. Nair, managing director of Consumerfed, which was chosen the best cooperative in the state last year. “For the villagers, there is a lot of excitement to step into the boat which has everything for their needs under one roof”. Provisions like rice, wheat and sugar are priced at least 10-15 percent below market rates. The prices of commodities inside the floating supermarket will be exactly the same as the prices in all other Triveni Supermarkets. “The villagers can buy even refrigerators and TV sets from the floating mall. For that one has to just place an order and it will be delivered at your doorstep within two-three weeks,” says A.K. Anoop, the mall’s manager. “The mall at Kuttanad has average daily sales of Rs.60,000,” he said. The sales go up during festivals like Onam and Christmas.

The Kerala State Cooperative Consumers Federation Ltd (Consumerfed), the apex body of consumer cooperatives, which owns the Rs 50-lakh mall, sells at less than market prices. The Floating Triveni offers an additional discount of two per cent to promote sales. Scheduled castes and tribal customers can avail of a further three per cent discount.

Consumerfed hit on the concept from the slender canoes ferrying men and materials along the labyrinthine backwaters and canals. Perhaps Triveni’s only limitation is its size – 16 metre long and six metre wide - which may make it difficult to navigate through some of the smaller channels. Says Riji R. Nair, MD, Consumerfed. “Initially, when this idea was floated, there was some scepticism. But we were ready to experiment and told the ship-builder that if he could build a platform that could float and remain intact, we would go for it. That’s how the mall was born.”

Meanwhile, considering the novelty of the backwater-cruising & island-hopping supermarket, Consumerfed has written to the Guinness Book of World Records, seeking its imprimatur that would float Triveni before the world’s eyes.
