Chinese Company Decides to Build Textile Factory with Over 500 Million USD
Tuesday, 02 September 2014 15:17

Addis Ababa September 02/2014 A Chinese delegation disclosed here that it has finalized pre-investment assessment to build a huge textile factory with over 500 million USD.

President Mulatu Teshome held talks on September 2, 2014 with a four-person Chinese business delegation led by Kong Xiangjun, Board Chairman of Giangsu Lianfa Textile Company Limited.

During the discussion with the President, Xiangjun said his company decided to invest in Ethiopia, specifically Addis Ababa, after making similar pre-investment assessments in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The textile industry will create more than 20,000 jobs when it goes operational.

President Mulatu on his part said the Ethiopian Government will provide all the necessary support for the company which has decided to engage in textile industry, which is the priority of the government.

He added that cheap labor and electricity, vast arable land as well as various quota and duty free opportunities to the U.S and EU markets would make the company profitable.

I really like how foreign investors have started to invest more money than ever. A few years ago we only heard investors putting like $60 million to build factories, but now they have started to put at least $100 million. It won't be long before this trend reaches billions.

Metec finished 5 spare parts factories worth 235 mil, for the Southern Regional State.

The Metal & Engineering Corporation (MetEC) is preparing to hand over five spare part manufacturing workshops to the Southern Regional State. The factories cost the regional government 235 million Br.

The Corporation made a deal last year with five regional governments to convert them into factories producing spare-parts for flour mills and vehicles. The five regional governments include; Oromia, Harari, Ahmara, the South, and Dire Dawa City Administration, according to Michael Desta, head of public and foreign relations at MetEC.

The Southern regional government will transfer the workshops, each of which will employ 100 workers, to the Small & Micro Enterprises (SME).

“We will fully transfer the workshops to the region in the coming two months,” said Michael.

MetEC is currently installing machinery at these workshops, located at Dilla, Hawassa, Hosaena and Arbaminch.

As part of the deal with the five administrations, MetEC will deliver a total of 42 workshops, at a total cost of close to two billion Birr. To date it has transferred 20 workshops to the Amhara, Tigray, and Oromia regional states.

“We are currently only receiving the commitment to pay the money from the regional states in order to hand over the workshops,” said Desta. “The regions will pay the total money for the MetEC in five years.”

The MetEC provides mechanical and technical training to employees at the workshops, says Michael. The machines are manufactured by Hibret Manufacturing & Machine Building Industry (HMMBI), one of the MetEC companies engaged with manufacturing industrial machinery and spare parts.

The remaining workshops currently under construction will be delivered to the regions before the end of the current fiscal year, says Desta.

He went on to explain that the MetEc has three aims in the construction of the workshops: increasing the country’s manufacturing industry, creating job opportunities and to manufacture spare parts locally.

Established 20 years ago, MetEC currently comprises 15 semi-independent and integrated manufacturing companies. These companies operate in more than nine sectors, including the assembly of vehicles, plastic and machinery manufacturing.

“Phase two of the construction of additional work shops will be begun as soon as the current phase has been completed,” Michael told Fortune.

Two radically opposed models of development are being born in Ethiopia at the same time. One is small, local, socially fair, and ecologically respectful. The other takes the globalisation of fashion to a new and more destructive level.

Well that is just bollocks! Why are Westerners obsessed in dichotomizing development. We need both.

I heard a lot of good things about Debrew Berhan -
This clip captures some of it. Some of the Manufacturing projects are already posted here but some are not such as - the Fridge Factory and the Heavy Machinery Assembly plant. Interesting.

Admin, I propose that pages be set up for the four states Amhara, Oromiya, Tigray and SNNP - separate from General Ethiopia so we can populate them accordingly. ;-)

I expected this.
Can you suggested another way to better organise the postings?
We can continue to post cities and towns but it will be a challenge to find and update.
Cheers!
