Couche-Tard's quarterly dividend was very profitable for Metro. The fact that the grocery retailer would sell such a big chunk of its C-T stocks now seems to suggest that Metro is in acquisition mode. I wouldn't be surprised to learn about a purchase of Safeway's canadian stores in the near future.

Supermarket chain Metro selling nearly half of Couche-Tard investment for $479M

MONTREAL — Supermarket chain Metro Inc. is selling nearly half of its 25-year investment in convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard to three Canadian banks for $479-million.

The Montreal-based company announced Tuesday that it has agreed to sell 10 million Class B subordinate voting shares to BMO Nesbitt Burns, National Bank Financial and TD Securities for $47.90 per share.

The sale to be completed within three days represents about 7.2% of Couche-Tard’s (TSX:ATD.B) outstanding B shares, which closed down 30 cents to $48.98 in Tuesday trading.

Record Sales Day in Canada and the UK

The launch of the much hyped BlackBerry Z10 smartphone in Canada on Tuesday was the best debut of any of Research In Motion Ltd.’s previous BlackBerrys, the company said in a brief statement on Wednesday.

“In Canada, yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone,” RIM’s chief executive officer Thorsten Heins said. “In fact, it was more than 50 [per cent] better than any other launch day in our history in Canada.”

RIM also noted that demand in the U.K. appeared to be strong. “In the U.K., we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone,” Mr. Heins also said.

Russian leasing company signs deal to buy up to 42 Bombardier CSeries planes

MONTREAL – A Russian leasing company has agreed to purchase up to 42 Bombardier CSeries aircraft in a potential $3.42-billion deal, the aircraft manufacturer announced Wednesday, shortly after it disclosed Transport Canada has certified the plane’s Pratt & Whitney engine.

Ilyushin Finance Co. seeks to acquire 32 of the larger CS300 planes at a list price of about US$2.56 billion, and has options for 10 additional planes, making it one of the largest CSeries orders to date.

The transaction signed Wednesday at Bombardier’s final assembly facility in Mirabel, Que., follows a letter of intent signed in 2011 for 30 CSeries planes. The agreement is subject to approval by Ilyushin’s shareholders.

General Motors will invest $250 million in its Cami assembly plant in Ingersoll to install flexible body shop equipment and tooling, the auto maker announced Friday.

CSeries will miss Paris Air Show

Bombardier Inc. will forgo displaying its CSeries at the Paris Air Show in June in order to finish testing before the jetliner's first flight the same month, Chief Executive Officer Pierre Beaudoin said.

The world's third-largest plane maker reiterated its commitment to that timetable in a presentation to investors Thursday in New York. The goal is already six months later than Bombardier originally planned, a delay the company attributed to unspecified issues with suppliers.
