Correct, absolutely, and I don't disagree. I'm suggesting a way of avoiding typical queuing behaviour where everyone divers across to the lane that stays open half a mile before the merge, which slows traffic down, and further down the road where there is the usual battle between someone aggressively hammering up the outside lane, trying to force themselves in at the very second and someone who is equally aggressive at not letting anyone in at any cost, which also holds everyone else up.

Give drivers a sense of equal priority, than conflict, then you're more likely to bring out their more courteous side than them acting like a proper tea towel holder.

Idiot drivers lining up in the slow lane for a mile when they should be using both lanes and then merging in turn like a zipper (as stated in the Highway Code) are the issue.

The real answer would be for the police to monitor the merge point at busy times and prosecute the idiots who refuse to allow the right lane to merge in turn with inconsiderate driving.

The fine and subsequent increase in insurance premiums would be the perfect lesson for them.

Barras Bridge

Roadworks are now under way on both sides of Barras Bridge.
NCC have said there is to be 'temporary' paving whilst they evaluate the changes. Not convinced why they have to do this. The existing two crossings are poorly laid out so changes are needed. I thought they could have perhaps had a junction similar to Oxford Circus where there is also a diagonal crossing. The two crossings proposed maybe should be synchronised to maximise timings for pedestrians and vehicles.
PS I'm not sure if the crossing on Percy Street is also to get the same treatment.

Commuters travelling into the city via Haymarket have faced long delays as work on one major changes to the city’s roads get under way.

Which roads are affected? The roads around Haymarket are affected including Barras Bridge which goes past the civic centre towards Northumbria University , the Great North Road, St Mary’s Place and Percy Street down towards the bus station. Although all of the routes will remain open throughout the roadworks Newcastle City Council has warned that there could be delays during peak travel times.

What changes are going to be made? Footpaths in the area are being widened and the number of lanes from Barras Bridge will be reduced from three to two. The pedestrian crossing will be made narrower so that the traffic lights won’t take as long to change back to green and traffic will be kept flowing.

Why are they being made? The aim is to tackle congestion and improve air quality in the city centre . Another key aim is to improve the area for those on foot, who make up a significant proportion of people in this part of the city as it is close to the universities, the Metro and bus stations as well as shops and workplaces.

How long will the road works be there?
The roadworks are set to finish in November, however the initial work is being done with a temporary material. This is so that the council can test how effective the new layout is and, if necessary, change it before any permanent decisions are made. This approach, to trial the changes and determine success or what alterations are needed before making any changes permanent, is similar to the approach used when Northumberland Street was changed back in the 1980s.

Thousands of drivers have been hit by bus lane fines after a council admitted it moved monitoring cameras.

The camera on Fowler Street, South Shields, has snared 1,942 drivers between April and June this year as South Tyneside Council’s income from bus lanes rocketed from £8,505 in 2015 to £81,245 in the first six months of 2017 alone.

South Tyneside Council first introduced in South Shields on Fowler Street, Sunderland Road and Westoe Road back in 2014, while another was installed on Edinburgh Road a year later.

Driver Mark Purves is one of almost 2,000 motorists to have been snapped in Fowler Street’s bus lane between April and June of this year alone. The dad-of-two was stunned when the fine landed on his doorstep, having completely forgotten about his journey on the afternoon of May 22. Mark, 38, said: “I didn’t even really realise at the time I had actually done it. I came out one of the side streets (Albermarle Street), and the camera sign is where the camera actually is - there’s no pre-warning. It is not very well signposted, it does not give drivers a second chance. That section is only like 20 yards, it’s tiny. It does not make any sense and it’s bizarre why the camera is there.”

A council spokesperson said: “The bus lane on Fowler Street is clearly signed and complies with the requisite Department for Transport regulations, as do all the other bus lanes in the borough. Video cameras automatically record incidents of people illegally driving in a bus lane and their vehicle registration plate. Vehicle owners have the right to appeal if they feel the ticket has been wrongly issued. Details on how to do so can be found on the reverse of the Penalty Charge Notice. Ideally, we would not have to issue any fines, however using a bus lane is illegal and unsafe and we would encourage motorists to observe the restrictions to avoid receiving a penalty.”

Why is the traffic so bad around the Haymarket? It isn't usually but will be once the council has finished with it.
The temporary built out extensions is the council's favourite material of choice - black tarmac
This morning pedestrians were crossing over to the University and nearly being run over so it's again a badly managed project.
