I just have to rant that Pine/Pike Streets between 2nd and 4th in the last month or so are looking like a war zone after about 5pm every day now. Just huge groups of wannabe ganGsTaz hanging out on the corners of 3rd and Pine like they're in a standoff and cops standing and just looking at them from across the street waiting for one of them to slip up. The street rats are multiplying at 4th and Pine like crazy. I was walking with my gf last night and walked through some huge drug bust or something. There were like 9 cop cars and street rats were cursing them out and a couple of them were being questioned.
Now, me and my gf are city-dwellers so we deal with sketchiness all the time but it seems to be at another level now. She actually said "you know I could never raise a kid around here." Which is everything wrong with downtown in a nutshell. Normally there are a few groups of delinquents here and there but it's just looking like one solid group of idiots all the way down. 5:15pm walking from my bus stop at 4th and Pine and I overhear a 25 y/o or so girl on her phone saying "I don't want to be down here alone come quick" like it was Compton or something. Tourists are hurrying through, obviously intimidated. It shouldn't be like that. What is the city's plan?

I walk around that stretch. It is horrible. And unlike Compton it's right in the core.

to make development as hard as possible, to ensure there are less concerned eyes on the streets maybe? Or make sure people like developers who make their money legally dont get theirs so the "poor" little drug dealers have free housing perhaps?

Maybe this is why I'm enjoying ducking into the Men's Department of Nordstrom to get to the tunnel from 6th Avenue. I never have to see Pine between 4th and 3rd unless I go out of my way.

Not a bad idea! My gf used to work in the projects in the south side of Chicago and even we are going out of our way to avoid the area after sundown. We're starting come from Belltown and turn at Escala and walk on 5th. It's sad because eyes on the street deter crime- but when normal people ignore a bad area things get worse exponentially.

The only good thing is the thug wanna beez are mostly limited to 3rd and Pine and the random street kids/anarchists have 4th and Pine along with the "Ladies/Woman in Black" protest group (last I saw) so they're not elsewhere.

The only way to make em move on is the make the area "lame." Hard to look "hard" when Wagner is playing and flowers are blooming.

Get rid of that McDonald's. That'll help.
