Dilworth Borders that to the Right.

Then Midtown/Elizabeth Charlotte is easily connected to Uptown. I277 goes over Stonewall and all the other streets connected the 2.

On top of that a Street car (with Tracks mostly laid) will connect the 2. Developments are already starting right by 277 to make the transition seemless. Elizabeth/Midtown has really built up over the years and there are huge lowrise (retail on floor level) projects coming online. A popular Greenway also connect the 2.

I'm just still baffled at this idea that Charlotte is 2/3 streets of urbanity....

I'm ready to see the DNZ does North Carolina - Charlotte thread.
I hope everyone will be sure and discuss Raleigh and post photos of it in the DZH does Charlotte thread.

The OP specifically mentioned clt being 2/3 streets. Parking lots surrounded by parking decks. And Boston and google maps.

The thread topic is RALEIGH. That's pretty simple to understand.

If you want to discuss how large Uptown Charlotte is, start a thread about it!

He went to Raleigh, Winston, Greensboro & Charlotte. & yet to do the clt thread. I'm not really interested in the bigger part (hence I ignored your comment about Atl/Clt and I didn't mention BOS)... I could careless who is bigger....I just wanted to know what made him jump to this conclusion since he has been there himself and not just guessing and assuming from pictures he sees on the Internet like some people do.

Wow...you just don't quite get it. Okay, then just keep telling everyone how great Charlotte is when it isn't appropriate. You don't do your city any good by acting so stubborn and pushy about it when it comes up in a thread like this. Good work!

I jumped to the conclusion by being there once and not leaving downtown (or uptown, or whatever you call the area with the skyscrapers). I parked sort of near the police headquarters area. I stand by my statement that I have never seen so many parking garages in my life. I would notice them too; where do you think I got most of these shots of Raleigh from?

Yes!

Levine land... Worst place you could start at visiting! That and third ward until recently and still for the next year. We were dubbed Car-lotte back in the 90s and it really was a giant parking lot...

That is still true for that part where a developer is sitting on that land. And I could see how you. Could jump to that conclusion... Unfortunately . Next time your down here give me a shout out.

But you missed my point from your previous post, there is no urban fabric connection between downtown and southend - it was destroyed by the freeway, sure the light rail readily moves people.

Raleigh avoided those kind of detrimental development mistakes...see the Durham freeway. Demolished quite a bit of the Hayti district and Durham's rich blues scene. If we can discuss Raleigh, surely we can have a little lattitude to mention Durham.

Lastly you are correct, urbanites familiar with uptown Charlotte are fustrated with Levine's (family dollar millionare heirs) inaction regarding the many years of promised plans to create walkable areas, retail etc in that part of 1st ward. I will give Charlotte some credit, my recent visits allowed me to check out a few of those neighborhoods and areas just outside of the I-277 debacle...there is lot more to the place than tall bldgs for a mid-size southern city.

For all practical purposes, southend is downtown but the continuity got destroyed by an unnecessary freeway or poorly designed freeway.
I agree that 277 is a problem, and while Charlotte never was and never will be Charleston, it did indeed raze too much. I actually have a book that details the historic urban stock that got razed in Uptown and I have to shake my head. It wasn't that it was a ton of buildings, but even if half of it remained, I'm convinced that Uptown would have more a little more historic character and definitely more street-level retail.
