Only one- Acropolis.
But lots of mixed use commercial complexes are coming up. Woodburn Central is one such example. Like soumalya mentioned, it will have Marks and Spencer, Reliance outlets, pubs and restaurants.

I read in Google that the Gross Leasable Area of SOUTH CITY MALL is 650,000 sq.ft. Is this true? It thought it was 1,000,000 sq.ft large! If this is true, then why do people often tag it as a "million square feet mall"?

There seem to be a few conflicting reports about this. The official website claims that it does have 1 million sq. ft. of space, but others place it at 650,000 sq.ft. Could this be the amount of retail space and the remaining 350,000 sq.ft. is used for something else?

Metro cinema revival back on track

KOLKATA: The ambitious Metro Cinema redevelopment project that had been pushed into the back burner following hawker encroachment in the adjoining alley is being revived. The Mumbai-based owners have appointed international commercial real estate consultancy firm — CBRE — to seal the Metro Cinema deal.

Sources said the Gupta family that owns the property is open to both outright sale if there is an irresistible offer or redevelopment into a retail hub. The property was built by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1935 to promote their films in Kolkata. With all approvals, including bar licence, in place, the Guptas believe local developers and businessmen will be interested. But, if they do not get a fancy price, they will go ahead with the redevelopment that is expected to cost around Rs 40 crore.

"Around three years ago, we took a hard decision that we cannot succeed as a single screen and applied for a multi-screen development. The approvals took two and a half years. The cinema was closed down around June last year after negotiations with the tenants. We are deliberating between taking it forward on our own or with a local joint development partner. With no new retail expected in the neighbourhood in the near future, retailers are willing to pay high rentals," said Nester D'Souza, V-P (projects), Metro Realty Group.

The Art Deco facade with waterfall-style columns and grand staircase of the 75-year-old theatre designed by New York-based architect Thomas Lamb will be retained. The other sections will, however, be demolished to make way for a six-storied 80,000 sq ft facility that will have a mix of retail and entertainment options — four floors retail, one floor cinema and one floor F&B. While retail will take up 60% space, two 85-seater theatres will ensure that Metro's tryst with movies continue. Part of the redevelopment plan is a two-level underground car park that can accommodate 50-plus vehicles. Architect firm Dulal Mukherjee & Associates has designed the redevelopment.

CBRE head (western region) Nikhil Bhatia said the property's prime location and heritage were twin USPs that the project would bank on. "Metro is flanked by some of the area's most celebrated structures — from the elegant British-era Oberoi Grand Hotel and neo-baroque Metropolitan Building to Victoria House. The area attracts the highest footfall. Millions of commuters travel the grand avenues that line Esplanade. All of Bengal comes to shop on this famous street," he pointed out.

According to industry sources, Shoppers' Stop has shown interest as have some jewellery and sari brands in what will possibly be eastern India's first high street organized retail destination. According to Bhatia, the project will get underway later this year and be completed in two years. "Metro will be reborn in 2017-end as a multi-use commercial space with a combination of retail, cinema and F&B options," he added.

Does anyone know what happened to the Kolkata Central Mall that was to be built by Future Retail... rather way back in 2007, Future Group mentioned that ""Kolkata Central", mall will have more than 400 brands. Future Group will roll out its first "Central" mall in Kolkata within the next two years. The mall, to be spread over 3 lakh square feet of area, will come up in the prime location of Ballygunge Circular Road called Tivoli Park, according to a company source."

But nothing happened so far whereas other cities got their own Centrals. Rajarhat Central by Mounthill Reality has no connection with this Future group one. If anyone has any updates, please do let me know.

Work has stopped long back. SBI- lenders to the project is trying to auction it off. On the ground floor few shops (India Silk House, Khadims, etc) have moved in.
