Luxembourg's new “Lentille” stadium for international football and rugby games is to open October of 2019 if all goes to plan, the capital's mayor confirmed on Thursday. Lydie Polfer unveiled detailed plans for the 60-million-euro, 9,385-seat football and rugby stadium to be located on Boulevard de Kockelscheuer in the Cloche d'Or district. Preparatory work on the site should begin in May 2017 and construction in September 2017, the mayor said.
Designed by architects BENG, the new stadium will feature a hybrid pitch at its centre, combining natural grass and artificial turf to shorten the time required for grass to recover between use.

Its seating scale ensures that the Lentille stadium meets the 8,000 capacity condition needed to be a member of UEFA. Other features include a roof over the spectator area, VIP areas, kiosks, a business club with kitchen, press rooms and television studio, changing rooms, rooms for police, fire and security and a multi-functional parking area. The latter should provide around 200 parking spaces for officials, emergency vehicles and press but which can also be used to host outdoor events with a capacity of up to 15,000 people.
The majority of the stadium bill will be picked up by Luxembourg's sports ministry, which will pay 70% of the costs up to a limit of 40 million euros.
