Nusa Tenggara Timur - Indonesia's Little Africa

Welcome to
Nusa Tenggara Timur

As far as adventure tour and travel is concerned, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Province truly must be one of Indonesia's best kept secrets. The diversity of the landscape, the people and the world class tourist attractions, all located in a safe and unspoiled environment make it a "must visit" destination. The unabashed friendliness of it's people contrasts with the exotic and energetic traditional ceremonies like the Pasola of Sumba, the whip fighting of Flores and the war dances of Sabu. See the prehistoric Dragons of Komodo, the three colored crater lakes of Keli Mutu in Flores; dive in the world renowned diving destinations of Alor and Komodo; surf the waves of Rote and Sumba or just relax on any of the hundreds of unspoiled beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. Try your hand at game fishing in Kupang, Rote or Sumba where Black Pacific Sailfish and Blue Marlin abound. It is considered one of the safest regions in Indonesia for foreign travelers. The people will embrace you with open arms and are very happy to welcome you into their villages to experience their traditional way of life. As we say, travel, tour, explore, experience & enjoy the excitement of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) INDONESIA'S BEST KEPT ADVENTURE TOUR & TRAVEL SECRET.

Why must Africa?? Is it only a nonsense or bullshit or else?? What makes Nusa Tenggara Timur deserves to be called a Little Africa?
No! It's not an ad. It's a reality. Savannah biome, beautiful green seas, friendly black people, white beach sands, rich culture, and still virgin. Undiscovered Beauty.

Only in Indonesia
A World All its Own

Alor Island

Alor Island is the least visited and therefore the most unspoiled region of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Trek to the rim of a volcano on Pantar or dive the straits of Alor and Pantar in a dive destination rated by all to be amongst the best in the world. Ponder on the existence of the Moko drums, which are not found in large numbers anywhere else in Indonesia and can be traced back to the Dongson period in Vietnam around 350 BC and you start to realize that Alor is truly a land lost in time. Visit and enjoy Alor in its unspoiled state while you still can.

Alor diving is known as the best in the world

Weaving an Alor fish trap

With its smoldering Volcanoes reaching down into crystal clear waters fringed with pristine coral reefs, coconut fringed pure white sandy beaches and traditional villages built half way up mountains, the scenery is as spectacular above as it is below the waterline. Alor island is so mountainous that it is almost impossible to pass from one side to the other and many of the villages on the island itself can only transport themselves via small wooden ferries. The eight distinct dialects and more than 50 sub-dialects spoken today, testifies to the diversity on Alor.

Lembata Island

Lembata island is known throughout the world as the home of traditional whaling but what is not known is that the people of this Island are especially rich in cultural tradition. The beautiful rich Ikat weavings are entirely made from home grown cotton, spun and dyed by the weaver. These cloths are still important as they are exchanged during marriage for Ivory tusks between the two families. The scenery throughout the Island is breathtaking, from the ever imposing "Ile Ape" volcano to the palm fringed bays to the colorful bustling local markets - beauty and excitement are everywhere.

Timor Island

"Timor offers ruggedly beautiful mountain scenery and takes you to centers of traditional weaving." Dr. Kal Muller

Timor Island or West Timor with its capital Kupang is the administrative and cultural center of Nusa Tenggara Timur. This is the starting point, the hub and the spring board for your adventure tour of the region as well as having an abundance of tourist attractions itself. Explore the nearby off shore Islands of Semau or Kera, visit the sacred houses of Belu, explore the limestone caves, dive, swim, visit the Museum or just relax on any of the many palm fringed white sandy beaches found throughout the Island.

Timorese cultural performers

Timorese dancers

There are currently 4 airlines with daily flights from Jakarta via Surabaya or Bali and an International airline with flights twice a week from Darwin Australia. There is a direct road link to Timor Leste (formally East Timor) and a ferry service linking all of the islands in the region. The National shipping line, Pelni also island hops through Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Timor Island is literally the stepping stone to the other islands in the region. From here you can take a short scenic ferry ride to Rote island or jump on one of the daily flights or ferries to any destination you wish to explore next.

Tag and Release Black Pacific Sailfish

West Timor has been well established amongst the world diving community as the place to go. Timor offers some of the most interesting diving opportunities in the region, including freshwater caves, wreck and big fish diving around the off shore Islands. Timor Island, along with Rote and Sumba are fast becoming known as the Game Fishing capital of Eastern Indonesia. While there are no special Game fishing boats available, it is possible to charter local boats, the local fishermen actually catch Marlin and Sailfish on their hand lines!

Rote Island

"Rote Island is beautiful, with transparent water, rugged rock formations, and offshore islands fringed with white beaches." Dr. Kal Muller

Rote and Ndao Islands
are peace and tranquilly personified where the people are still predominantly influenced by their past beliefs and traditions. Even today, following ancient tradition, the Kingdom of Rote is divided into two groups of clans named "Sunrise" and "Sunset". Each clan performs it's own rituals during the yearly "Hus" festival. Rote Island is linked by a daily ferry service to Kupang making it very accessible for travelers who have the choice of visiting some of the many traditional villages or heading to the southern beaches for surfing or diving.

Rote Surfing

Here in Rote Island as in Sabu, the versatile Lontar Palm plays a vital part in their life, as well as drinking the energy rich sap, they convert the surplus into palm sugar. The timber is used to build houses and the leaves are used as roofing material, for making the distinctive Rotenese hat and in their traditional musical instrument, the Sasando. Both Rote and Sabu Islanders derive most of their daily nutritional requirements from the drought resistant Lontar Palm.

Sabu Island

"Sabu is one of the most interesting destinations in Nusa Tenggara."
Dr. Kal Muller

Sabu and Raijua Islands are also peaceful and tranquil but being less accessible than Rote ensures that their Islands are less influenced by visitors. Traditional ceremonies and seasonal fertility and war dances are performed throughout the year as dictated by their beliefs. The Island of Sabu is divided into four spiritual domains with a fifth on Raijua Island so there is always a traditional ceremony being performed somewhere on the Island. So when visiting the Island, don't hesitate to inquire about any religious or cultural ceremonies being performed while you are there.

The Sabanese are warm and friendly people who totally enjoy interacting with visitors to their Islands who are interested in their culture. This affords the visitor a chance to see at first hand the collection and processing of the Lontar palm juice. Try the drink for yourself and you will be pleasantly surprised with its sweet but refreshing taste. Later on in the evening, try the fermented juice or "Laru", but not too much as it can be intoxicating. Also take the time to see the intricate processes involved in the weaving of Ikat cloth. Once you have observed Sabunese life up close and personal you will no doubt be impressed with their skills and determination to make the most of their little slice of paradise.

Komodo Island

"Komodo Island is rugged, dry and barren, and appears a perfect setting for its seemingly Jurassic-age inhabitants." Dr. Kal Muller

Komodo island is located is located between the island of Sumbawa and Flores at the western tip of the Province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and is best known as the habitat of giant Monitor lizards know as Komodo Dragons. Komodo Island is part of the Komodo National Park and Marine reserve, a professionally managed world class nature park and diving destination - what more could an adventure traveler ask for than prehistoric dragons & excellent diving, all at the one destination - what ever you do, don't miss this!

Komodo Dragons

The Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis) or "Ora" as the locals call them, roam the island of Komodo as there ancestors did over a half a million years ago. The only human population on the island is at the fishing village called Komodo, these brave inhabitants supplement their income by breeding goats which are used to feed the lizards. A trip to Komodo to see the dragons a totally awesome adventure as they are now no longer kept in an enclosure but free to roam and hunt for food anywhere they please. The experienced and well trained park rangers will take you on a hike through the bush lands of Komodo Island for the experience of a lifetime.

The Komodo Dragons grow to 4 meters in length and their main sources of food are wild pig, goats and deer which have been introduced onto the island as food for the Dragons, they are even known to eat the carcasses of their own kind. These Dragons which are considered the last of their kind remaining in the world today, have also been found around Manggarai, Riung, Ngadan and even in the northern areas of the Ende Regency on Flores island.

Komodo Diving

Komodo Island is part of the Komodo Marine reserve with warm swift current diving a feature. The underwater world is teeming with a seemingly endless collage of fish species and coral formation. You will be pleasantly surprised at what you find and ponder the contrast of a barren monotone island above with the sea so full of color below the waterline. If you go to Komodo to see the Dragons, you definitely must dive there also - and vice versa. Enjoy.

Flores Island

"The three water-filled craters of Keli Mutu on Flores, provide an almost surreal sight..." Dr. Kal Muller

Flores island is a long, narrow mountainous island which stretches over 350 kilometers with dramatic volcanoes, mountain lakes and flora and fauna like no other island in the region. Even though 85% of its inhabitants are Roman Catholic, the island is still as ethnographically diverse as Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) itself. The capital of Flores, Maumere, has direct daily flights to Kupang and Bali and is well serviced by ferries and the Pelni ships as well as several privately operated shipping lines.

Flores Ikat weaving process

Kelimutu Lake, the three coloured lake (Green, Blue, Black)

The Three Coloured Lakes of Keli Mutu are recognized as a natural wonder. The colors of the lakes have changed over the years, is it the changing chemical or biological composition of the craters' water causing this color change - ponder on it while you view one of Indonesia's most mysterious and dramatic sights. Flores Island exemplifies diversity more than any other region of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), from the varying motifs of the Ikat weavings of Sikka, Manggari and Nggela to the spectacular Three Colored Lakes of Keli Mutu contrasting with the pristine coral gardens of the Seventeen Island National Reserve of Riung. Whether giant monitor lizard watching in Damu Bay or experiencing the dusk flight of the thousands of flying foxes on Ontoloe Island - Flores Island is as diverse as it is beautiful.

Flores Whip Fighters

Komodo Dragon

Flores island is the home to some of the most traditional ceremonies and rituals of both Catholic and Animalistic backgrounds. The breath taking ritual whip fighting of Manggari , the solemn Catholic Easter festival in Larantuka. Traditional boxing bouts called "sagi" or "etu" still take place on a regular basis in Bajawa inviting all to witness this age old sport which is again based on their traditional belief of survival of the fittest! In addition, relics and artifacts are to be found throughout the length and breadth of Flores Island, like the prehistoric bronze boat from the Dongsong era, called Dobo or Baobatung in a village near Maumere, where it is carefully kept by the people as an ancestral heirloom.

Labuanbajo, a traditional fishing village, lies at the extreme western part of Flores Island. It has recently developed as a local diving destination and serves as a jumping off point for the trip to Komodo Island. There are many other interesting places to visit around Labuanbajo, the petrified forest and several spectacular caves like Batu Cermin, Batu Susun and Waraloka Cave, antique ceramics have been found at the latter. Flores Island is also known as the habitat of giant Lizards know as Komodo Dragons which have been found in Manggarai, Riung, Ngada and the northern areas of Ende. The Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis) grows up to 4 metres in length and have roamed this area for the last half a million years.

Keli Mutu Lake

Located in Flores Island, Mt. Kelimutu, 1.690m fifty years ago, had three lakes, one lake was blue green, one fiery green and one red. Thirty years later, the colors had changed to blue, red brown and cafe au lait. Now, Ata Bupu (Lake) is a dramatic dark-brown. Ata Polo are dark red-brown, and only Nuwa Muri remains aquamarine or turquoise as it apparently always was.

No one can explain the cause of such color changes except to suppose that different minerals are dissolved in the waters of each lake at Lake Kelimutu.
