As I previously posted, there are just a few American cities I consider vacation-worthy and New Orleans is near the top of them for it's fabulous historical and cultural interest, compact/walkable downtown and "old town" (i.e the French Quarter), public transit that, while not great, gets you where you are likely to want to go, top dining options, nightlife and general "there's so much to do and see here and its all fun." I would go in winter, late fall or early spring though--it's miserable hot in summer.
