Papeete * French Polynesia * The Capital of the Paradise

Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas country of France in the Pacific Ocean. The commune (municipality) of Papeete is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, of which Papeete is the administrative capital. It is the primary center of Tahitian and French Polynesian public and private governmental, commercial, industrial and financial services, the hub of French Polynesian tourism and a commonly used port of call. The Windward Islands are themselves part of the Society Islands. The name Papeete means "water from a basket".
The urban area of Papeete had a total population of 133,627 inhabitants at the August 2012 census, 25,769 of whom lived in the commune of Papeete proper.

Nope. You can fly from LAX (or Honolulu) with Air Tahiti Nui.

Air France also offers direct flights to Papeete several times a week from LAX as well as Air New Zealand and Air Pacific.

Lots of direct options there for you.

United also offers a connecting flight from Newark and Houston via HNL and Guam...

Of all the places in the South Pacific, it's probably the most expensive (along with New Caledonia).

As with all south pacific island nations, "western style" tourism is expensive... And the more "touristy" the place is, the more expensive it is.

To be fair, much of the reason is because a small island nation typically has to import a lot of stuff, and what stuff is produced locally tends to be small scale manufacturing which is also more expensive.

Bora Bora, a very touristy island in French Polynesia is almost extortionate pricing.

Not 100% sure if the mountain is Mont Orohena or not, but it's the tallest mountain in French Polynesia, and does indeed sit behind Pateete... It's 2241m high.
