New railway projects

Prabhu launches 20 rly projects worth Rs 5,500 cr at one go

Quote:

Giving a major thrust to infrastructure development in the region, railway minister Suresh Prabhu on Tuesday launched 20 projects costing over Rs5,550 crore at one go at Nagpur.

Prabhu laid the foundation stone for crucial third railway line projects between Itarsi-Nagpur (280km), Wardha-Ballarshah (132km), and third & fourth line between Nagpur-Wardha (76km).

He also laid the foundation for a 134-metre-long FOB connecting all eight platforms with five lifts at Nagpur station, besides converting Ajni into a satellite terminus. The projects were launched through video conferencing in the presence of dignitaries, MPs, MLAs and senior officials.

Addressing a motley crowd of employees, passengers, individuals and members of rail user bodies, Prabhu said Nagpur was centrally located and cannot be isolated. The launch of new lines will also being additional trains to Vidarbha.

"People's expectations from the Railways have increased but our infrastructure has not gone up as compared to demands. Hence, we are investing Rs3.50 lakh crore on various railway projects across Indian Railways, and Nagpur will automatically benefit from them," he added.

The railway minister laid stress on converting all metre gauge lines into broad gauge, besides electrification and strengthening railway infrastructure in Maharashtra.

Prabhu said the state government and railway ministry have already formed Maharashtra Railway Infrastructure Development Company Limited (MRIDC), a joint venture to implement railway projects worth Rs1.36 lakh crore in the state.

Prabhu also highlighted his 'Mission 41K', which aims to save Rs41,000 crore in power bills for Indian Railways up to 2025. "Over the years, rate of electricity for traction has increased considerably, putting a lot of burden on railway finances. We have now started exploring feasibility of purchasing electricity from the open market," he said.

Accordingly, a power purchase agreement (PPA) was signed in November 2015 by Central Railway with Ratnagiri Gas & Power Private Limited (RGPPL) for 50 traction sub-stations in Maharashtra. The use of traction supply from RGPPL between November 2015 to March 2017 saved Rs800 crore for the Railways in Maharashtra.

Senior officials told TOI Central Railway has again signed a PPA with RGPPL for a period of five years from April 1, 2017. Traction power will be supplied at Rs5.50 per unit as against the present power tariff of Rs9 per unit by MSEDCL. Thus, Central Railway will save Rs2,500 crore over the next five years.

Prabhu informed that Railways plan to increase installed capacity target for solar power plants to 1,000MW by 2020. "This will also save power bills," he added.

Gadkari hints railway station flyover may go

Quote:

Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday hinted at demolition of the flyover near main railway station as it was causing inconvenience to people and traffic snarls. Gadkari was speaking after railway minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off the special weekly Ajni-Pune train at a function held at Nagpur railway station.

Prabhu also unveiled 20 new projects of the Indian Railways for Vidarbha region.

Gadkari suggested to the railway officials to hire a consultant to prepare a map for the new project so that chaotic traffic near the main station could be streamlined. He asked them to submit to him details of the proposed project and assured support of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and legislators when the work on it starts.

Gadkari said such an arrangement is necessary with Nagpur Metro coming up fast while Ram Jhula all set to have four lanes. The need for demolition of the flyover near the railway station was felt since long as flow of people coming from and going toward Central Avenue was causing traffic problems.
Gadkari also demanded cooperation of the railways to develop a new road from Ajni to Tukdoji Putla for linking south and west Nagpur. Conversion of Nagpur-Nagbhid railway line into broad gauge was awaiting approval of NITI Aayog, said Gadkari.

Gadkari thanked Prabhu and Indian Railways for launching projects for Vidarbha which will play an important role in the development of the region. Naxalite infested areas will see development take place as Wadsa and Gadchiroli will have enhanced rail connectivity with important cities, he added. He also said the project for international airport at Nagpur has got the sanction and the work is expected to start within four to five months.
The focus should be on development of Ajni and Godhni railway stations as Nagpur is growing fast. These stations have a lot of space and potential for development. Once this becomes a reality, overall development of Vidarbha, vis-a-vis Maharashtra, will be possible, Gadkari added.

Rail Min flags off Ajni-Pune AC train from Nagpur, inaugurates 20 new projects

Quote:

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has flagged off the much awaited Ajni-Pune-Ajni AC superfast weekly train here on Tuesday, while also announcing Nagpur-Amrutsar-Nagpur and Pune-Amravati-Pune AC superfast trains. In addition to it Prabhu also inaugurated 20 new railway projects.

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir, Nagpur District Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, city Mayor Nanda Jichkar among others were prominently present on the occasion.

The other projects that the Railway Minister inaugurated are Nagpur-Itarsi and Nagpur Ballarshah third line, Wardha-Nagpur third and fourth line, Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Nagpur railway station with 5 lifts, Godhni cabin, double line at Kalamna yard, development of Ajni as satellite terminal, water recycling plant at Ajni, development of passenger facilities at Godhni railway station, coach depot at Itwari railway station, coach maintenance facilities at Motibagh, electrification of Amla-Parasia rail line, expansion of passengers’ facilities at Chandrapur station, installation of LED lights at Nagpur, Ballarshah and Wardha railway stations and official announcement of wi-fi facility at Nagpur station.

Addressing the programme, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that there is an emergent need to run daily AC trains from Nagpur to Pune and Mumbai. Getting these trains is a happy sign for the people of Vidarbha, he added.

On the occasion Suresh Prabhu said that railways have developed a lot after BJP government came into power at the Centre. He also exuded confidence that the pace of development would only grow exponentially in coming 3 years. He said that he has been focussing on improvising infrastructure in order to attain the maximum railway development.

Activists want zonal railway headquarters at Nagpur

Quote:

Ahead of railway minister Suresh Prabhu's maiden visit to the city on Tuesday, there is a demand to make Nagpur a separate railway zone. Various rail users' bodies and individuals have pitched for a zonal headquarter in Nagpur to boost overall development of railways in the region.

Former zonal rail users' consultative committee (ZRUCC) member Pravin Dabli said Central Railway had five divisions, South East Central Railway (SECR) had three while South Central Railway had six divisions. "Nagpur can be a zone if Nagpur divisions of Central Railway and SECR, and Nanded division of SCR are merged," he said. "This will help expedite various ongoing projects in the region," he added.

"Nagpur has huge railway land for establishment of new rail zone. Separate zone can play a key role in development of Vidarbha," said Rail Yatri Sangh chief Brijbhushan Shukla. "Separate zone will increase connectivity across India as Nagpur is centrally located. It will also reduce workload on other zones," he said.

The organizations believe new rail zone will also generate employment and provide a platform for establishment of Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). Basant Shukla, general secretary of Bharatiya Yatri Kendra (BYK), said, "Nagpur can become a zone. The city is second capital of Maharashtra and has everything needed to be a zonal headquarters. If Nagpur is declared a zone, projects worth crores will be expedited. Passengers will benefit."
The rail users' bodies also demanded implementation of pending decisions like establishment of railway hospital and mechanized laundry here. "We are not demanding anything new, we just want implementation of old proposals already sanctioned in budgets before," said BYK's Shukla.

He also demanded development of east side of the Nagpur station. "There is huge space to develop parking facility, restrooms for passengers, waiting halls and a police post for security," he said.

Dabli said even after five years, the Nagpur-Kalamna doubling project had not seen light of the day.

Enough about the railways now, lets's talk about the airport.

Airport privatization hinges on two lease deeds

Quote:

After union home ministry last month, gave security clearance to five companies which had shown interest in bidding for the Nagpur airport privatization, a key formality remains to be done without which financial bids cannot be invited.

Two separate lease deeds remain to be signed between Mihan India Limited (MIL) — the current operator of the airport, Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) and Airports Authority of India (AAI). This should have been done in 2009, when MIL was formed but the formality remained pending over the years.

Without the lease deeds, MIL cannot go ahead with calling of financial bids for airport privatization, despite having got the security clearance.

MIL was formed in 2009 to run the airport. It is a joint venture company (JVC) of state government's MADC, which is executing the Mihan project and AAI. Both have contributed equity in the form of land and infrastructure. The two partners were supposed to sign a lease deed with their own JVC for letting out the land and other assets to it.

This means AAI which gave the airport building and other freehold land has to sign a lease deed with MIL for it use. Even the MADC which has mainly contributed freehold land has to also sign a similar document. The formality should have been completed in 2009 itself, but remained pending over the years say sources.

Now, the concession agreement to be signed with the prospective private player investing in the airport depends on the lease deeds between MADC-AAI and MIL. Hectic efforts are under way to get the deeds signed, said sources.

It is being hoped that both the deeds will be signed soon so that the MIL can go ahead with calling financial bids under request for proposal (RFP). MIL has taken up the matter with both AAI and MADC.

Though the job can be done faster at MADC's end, MIL will have to wait till the AAI signs on the dotted line. The matter is being expedited at both the ends, said sources.

In the meantime a proposal has been forwarded to the state government for granting a cabinet approval to the privatization. This is because state's MADC is a partner in the airport.

The privatization process began with calling of request for qualification (RFQ) to which six companies had responded in October 2016. These include Essel Infrastructure, IRB Mumbai, GVK, GMR, Tata Realty and PNC Infrastructure.

IRB has opted out of the race with the remaining five getting the mandatory security clearance from home ministry. Now the MIL can go ahead with calling of financial bids under RFP. In the RFQ stage the companies' eligibility to bid for the airport was considered.

Segregation of dry, wet waste to start from World Environment Day

NMC to distribute 11 lakh garbage bins among 5.5 lakh families free of cost

Quote:

In a major push aimed at clean and beautiful Nagpur, collection of segregated dry and wet garbage would commence from June 5 which is celebrated as World Environment Day. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will distribute green and blue garbage bins to citizens for the purpose.

This was decided at the general body meeting of NMC held at Mahal-based Town Hall on Monday.

The House also approved a proposal to appeal to companies, MPs, MLAs, to contribute from their development funds for purchase of 11 lakh bins that is to be distributed free of cost among 5.5. lakh units in city. Separately, Ruling Party Leader Sandeep Joshi also tabled a proposal saying every Corporator should also contribute a part of their development funds to enable purchase of bins. The solace for Corporators would be that the bins would carry their names and Joshi said there could be cap of Rs. 2 lakh for contribution from Corporators. The total cost of getting 11 lakh bins comes to Rs. 14 crores and NMC would also appeal people who can afford to purchase at least one bin to avoid burdening the exchequer.

New Transport Committee formed:

The general body meeting of NMC formed the new Transport Committee. Nine members of Bharatiya Janata Party, two of Congress and one of BSP were nominated to the Committee. Jitendra alias Bunty Kukde, a first time Corporator, is the new Chairman of Transport Committee. Bhandewadi Dumping Yard problems:

Mayor Nanda Jichkar directed Municipal Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal and Health Department officials to visit Bhandewadi Dumping Yard and submit a report on problems of garbage disposal within 15 days. The members said the foul smell emanating from Bhandewadi Dumping Yard is making the lives of nearby citizens miserable. Frequent fire incidents are only adding woes to the already distressed citizens.

Well there was some opposition to the land acquisition for Manish Hagar flyover, but things seemed to be sorted out now.

Great Engineering overcomes great hurdles – Ujwal Nagar homes ‘saved’!!

Quote:

“It is less than perfect, but still good. Our engineers have been working on a solution relentlessly; 6 months have been wasted already – how long can the commuters from Manish Nagar suffer?” Says the man whose life’s motto is – ‘ it is indeed possible; it’s all about Engineering!’, who else but Maharashtra’s Metro man Brijesh Dixit!

“The C.M. Mr. Devendra Fadnavis was himself involved in this project and finding a solution to the problem – we did not want the pace of work to be affected with the prospect of time consuming legal hurdles and forceful eviction of people. The whole exercise is for the benefit of Nagpur citizens, not just for today but for the coming 100 years – what is the point of it if they are unhappy?”

It is almost final that the subway that was to ply under the railway line at Ujwal Nagar is being shifted to another spot – closer to the present railway crossing – and the residents of the 14 houses of Narkesari Housing Society and Ujwal Nagar that were to be ‘relocated’ will remain unscathed.

10 lakhs TVU – why a flyover was long overdue

What is TVU?? It is train vehicle units. A multiple of the number of trains that pass a railway crossing and the number of two wheelers/ four wheelers that are affected on the road due to closing of gates when trains pass.

“The recognized norm is that when TVU crosses 1 lakh, there ought to be a flyover/ subway to allow road traffic to go on unhindered. Here we had 10 lakhs!! Imagine the agony of commuters who have to wait almost an hour everyday when they are on the way home from office in the evenings or worse, on the way to office in the morning…”

It does seem now that the planners of that time goofed up – a railway overbridge should have been planned when the Chatrapati flyover was built over 2 decades ago. But may be no one understood or appreciated then how popular Manish Nagar and Besa would get as new residential areas of the city.

It is where many ‘new generation immigrants’ to Nagpur have their homes. Their work places are however mostly on the other side of the railway track – in MIHAN, Butibori, Sitabaldi, Sadar etc. etc. and they have to cross over twice everyday. Though MIHAN is yet to see sizable employment the promise is there and looming larger. Property rates were attractive and affordable in that area, though that is no more so! The area is quite densely populated already, despite problems like water shortage, bad roads and many societies not yet legalized by NIT/ NMC. As population grew, so did the vehicles waiting to cross over at the hitherto sleepy, lazy railway crossing that had existed at the entry point to Manish Nagar ever since the first few houses sprung up on the other side. Who knew then that the trickle would turn into a flood and then into a deluge?

The original plan

Just as blue print was being made ready for the Nagpur metro 4 – 5 years ago, a flyover for Manish Nagar was also promised and was on the anvil.

When pace of work began progressing actively on the metro, a wise decision was made to hand over some highway/ busy main road flyovers that were in close proximity to metro line also to Nagpur Metro for design and execution.

“This way we have succeeded in assimilating the two projects and designing pillars in such a way that the same pillar supports both metro and flyover. So unlike cities like Bangalore where pillars for metro and flyover are separate but in close proximity, the area under is not cluttered with too much space being taken up. The roads/ areas under our pillars will remain spacious, uncluttered and airy. The pillars themselves will be objects of art – either with vertical gardens, or attractive colouring. At night, they will be lit up tastefully. Who says all tall, metallic structures have to be ugly and an eye sore? Look at our Howrah bridge or the Sidney bridge!

"Nothing planned and built by the Maharashtra metro will be ugly or unpleasant to behold. That is my promise to Nagpur!”, says Dixit.

Just like beauty is an objective, safe and smooth flow of traffic was also a big goal. This is where the need for both a flyover and a subway was originally felt. (For bifurcation of traffic on the left and traffic on the right). The two were to be combined and built at the same spot and this is where Ujwal Nagar residents would have to forfeit their houses. Not all of course, but 14 of them.

All houses built in 80s and 90s

Almost all these houses have been built at the fag end of 80s or ’90 and ’91. 26, 27 years ago. People who built them are in their 70s and 80s now. The prospect of seeing their houses demolished and having to move was very disturbing to say the least.

For Keshavrao Hadap and his wife for instance. Keshavrao retired from the Irrigation department a while ago. Born in 1941, he is 77 running now.

“I built this house in 1990, just 9 years before retiring. My job in the irrigation department took me all over Maharashtra and I had no time to settle down and have my own house. Since my family hails from Vidarbha, I wanted to have a house in Nagpur though most irrigation projects were being built elsewhere.” (Don’t we in Vidarbha know that very well!)

“Finally it was during his Parbhani posting that we built this house” pipes in his wife. ” He used to travel from Parbhani and live in hotels to oversee construction when it was at some crucial stage.”

“My friends helped me a lot and chipped in when I could not travel” says Hadap.

Naturally the large, spacious though normal middle class house is very precious to them.

“It is home not just to the two of us but our son and our daughter and her family too. Our daughter was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, and naturally we were all concerned and disturbed. We asked her to move with us so we could look after her during her treatment – she lives upstairs with her family. Now not just we are having sleepless nights wondering what would happen to our home but she is very agitated too and it is not good for her!” says Mrs. Chatap. Their son Manish who teaches in Y.C.C.E has been at the forefront of the affected householders group.

Well, the Chataps and 13 other families like them, mostly inhabited by a generation that is in their 70s now – with or without their children living with them – can sleep undisturbed now.

Their homes are safe

“Not that the C.M. did not understand their agony and their dilemma. He, and the administration tried hard to find an amicable and acceptable solution, like even offering them plots on the Wardha road itself, adjacent to Hotel Airport Centre point, but nothing convinced them.

"Finally we decided to respect their sentiment and their emotion and shift the subway elsewhere. Our team of engineers, including our consultant of this project L&T worked hard and long on this issue and found a solution.”

Dixit might say it is ‘good, not great’ but we say anything that ends well is both good and great!

Green buses awaiting PESO nod for ethanol filling station

Quote:

Scania Commercial Vehicle India Private Limited's (SCVIPL's) plan to ply 55 green buses in the city will have to wait for some more time as Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization (PESO) is yet to give the green signal for ethanol filling station for these buses.

Shivaji Jagtap, transport manager of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), told TOI that nod from PESO was expected soon. "We will not impose any fine on Scania for the delay because as per our conditions, NMC was to help it in getting necessary permits," he said.

NMC had been selected by the central government to run 55 green buses. It had floated expressions of interest (EoIs) for running the buses which was bagged by Scania. The company announced its plans to run 55 ethanol-fired air-conditioned buses in April 2016. However, the plans have remained on paper only. It has been running a single green bus between RBI Square and Khapri since August 2014.

The road for the green buses has been one full of hurdles. NMC thrice floated expression of interest (EoI) for appointing an operator to run green buses, but it received a dismal response. The civic body received only four applications. Shockingly, there was no response in the first EoI while for the second bid, two companies had shown interest. As they had no experience to run city bus services, the civic body called for another EoI.

The third time, the NMC invited tenders at the national level and received two applicants — Scania and a Pune-based travel firm Travel Time Car Rental Private Limited. Scania was chosen for the job.

After a lot of delays, NMC announced that the green buses would run from November 15, 2016. However, the centre had not included ethanol-run buses in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules at that time. The Nagpur regional transport office (RTO) advised NMC to get approval from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) and a certificate from a testing agency. Now, NMC is waiting from a nod from PESO for the ethanol filling station.

In general, NMC's city bus service record has been dismal. It had appointed Vansh Nimay Infra Projects Limited (VNIP) to run the city bus service in 2007 but the operator's services were very poor leading to termination of its contract in 2016.

Ola bringing 200 electric vehicles, investing Rs 50 crore

Quote:

Cab aggregator Ola will launch a first-of-its-kind all-electric powered multi-modal transport hub in Nagpur next week in which a pool of 200 e-vehicles, including cabs, buses and rickshaws will ply on the roads.

Ola is investing Rs50 crore in the project and it will own all 200 vehicles as well as the four charging stations at different corners of the city that is being set up.

This venture will be launched on May 26 by MP and Union Minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari. That day also marks three years of Modi government's formation and is also the eve of Gadkari's 60th birthday. The e-taxi project is perceived as a pet project of Gadkari who is been keen to promote various environment-friendly means of transport.

Anand Subramanian, senior director of marketing communications at Ola, told TOI that the project is a massive one and the company has put several innovations in place. "We are literally building an ecosystem where different types of transports like buses, cars and rickshaws run on clean energy and be available to consumers on a common platform. No one has done this before," he said.

With innovation also comes grey areas and registering of e-taxis was one such hurdle because existing rules were designed keeping fossil-fuel vehicles in mind. As per Maharashtra's permit norms, vehicles of more than 980cc (cubic centimetres) engine capacity can be registered for commercial operation and these have to be of at least 1,400cc for high-end services.

Electric vehicles don't fall under the cc category as they have no internal combustion engines and their capacity is defined in terms of kilowatts (kw). Subramanian was hesitant to comment on this particular aspect till at least the launch date, but told TOI that it won't be a problem. "All vehicles hitting the road will be fully complaint with the law of the land," he said.

The 200 vehicles will be launched in a phased manner to keep in synch with the ground level infrastructure. "Each of the four charging stations will have a mix of slow and rapid charging sockets, with the latter being more than 10 times faster," said Subramanian.

At least one of the charging stations, if not more, will by operation on launch date. The stations are likely to use solar energy too. Neither confirming nor denying this, Subramanima said, "We will announce everything on the launch date as there are lot of innovative aspects of this project which people will be pleasantly surprised to know about."

Part of the hub's ecosystem will be a facility for maintenance and repairs electric vehicles. "We are working closely with all our partners/manufacturers like Mahindra, BYD etc to ensure that everything needed for the hub exists in Nagpur. This project will see more investment coming, in the near future," said Subramanian.

Skill development will also be pushed through by Ola for its drivers. "A local office that is already taking care of it but of course with the scope and size increasing, we will be ensuring that professional skills are imparted to drivers," said Subramanian.

Scania green buses are now a common sight along some routes. I saw their depot near Gondkhairi on NH6 but the guard wouldn't let me take pics. He told me that the ethanol fueling station was at Khapri naka.

Mahindra And Ola To Power India's First Electric Mass Mobility Ecosystem

The pilot project will include launching a fleet of 200 electric vehicles in the city, which the citizens of Nagpur can book for their transportation needs using the Ola app. 100 out of these will be Mahindra's new e2o Plus electric hatchback.

Quote:

Leading utility vehicle manufacturer Mahindra and app-based taxi service provider Ola Cabs today entered into a partnership with the Indian government to build the country's first electric mass mobility ecosystem. This first-of-its-kind programme will bring vehicles across different segments, including e-buses, e-cabs, and e-rickshaws together on a single platform, the Ola app. The project, which is about to change the automotive and transportation landscape in the country, will be implemented in the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra. This revolutionary project was inaugurated by Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping earlier today at the Nagpur Airport Complex today.

Mahindra has given 100 e2o Plus cars for this project

The pilot project will include launching a fleet of 200 electric vehicles in the city, which the citizens of Nagpur can book for their transportation needs using the Ola app. Out of these 200 electric vehicles, 100 will be Mahindra's new e2o Plus electric hatchback, which the company has offered for this project. Kinetic will be supplying 100 of its e-rickshaws - Kinetic Safar, for Phase 1. Additional vehicles will be procured from other OEMs including Tata Motors, BYD, and TVS amongst others.

Launching this new initiative, CM Devendra Fadnavis said, "We are extremely proud of the commitment corporations like Ola, Mahindra and others are working towards building sustainable transportation for all. In support of this initiative, we have waived off VAT, road tax, and registration for all electric vehicles in the state, and we look forward to building Maharashtra as a model state for others to emulate in the future."

Whereas, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said, "There is an urgent need to re-think and revisit transport infrastructure and fuel dependency, not just in India, but globally. Large scale adoption of electric vehicles can bring the monumental change that we urgently need, and in this endeavour, we launched the 100% EV nation by 2030 mission. It is heartening to see Indian companies such as Ola and Mahindra taking Government's vision forward and in building a strong ecosystem for sustainable mobility. I look forward to working with them to make the 2030 vision a reality."

To further support this project, Ola has announced an investment of over ₹ 50 crore towards EVs and charging infrastructure, starting with 50+ charging points across 4 strategic locations in the city of Nagpur. At the event, Ola unveiled the first of these electric charging stations, which is situated within the airport complex. Furthermore, Ola will also invest in training and educating driver partners on maintenance and use of in-car technology along with its key OEM partners like Mahindra.

NMRDA to handle NIT schemes in metro region

Quote:

The first meeting of executive committee of Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) was held on Wednesday. It was conducted by Sudhir Shrivastava, additional chief secretary (home) and Nitin Kareer, principal secretary (urban development I).

The committee decided that the improvement schemes of NIT in metro region will be handled by NMRDA in future. The committee also cleared building of roads and laying of water pipelines in NIT's Mihan township.

The proposal to appoint a consultant for setting up a new logistics park in Awandi-Bhawri-Gumthala was also cleared. Green signal was given to the process for constructing the Gondkhairi-Chinchbhuvan-Pendhri improvement scheme. The tender for survey of unauthorized constructions in metro region and for preparing a proposal to regularize them was also given a nod.

The committee also decided that NMRDA would go in for affordable housing schemes in metro region under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

The work done by NIT in metro region was reviewed by the committee. Shrivastava and Kareer gave instructions to metropolitan commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar for future working of NMRDA.

NIT was to be dissolved by December, but as of yet, this seems a little unachievable.

Nagpur one of the 3 Indian cities selected for the prestigious ‘MobiliseYourCity’ initiative

Quote:

India, France and the European Union have come together as part of a global sustainable development project, which will work at transforming three major Indian cities by improving urban mobility and cutting down carbon footprint.

France and the European Union will collaborate with India as part of a global sustainable development project, which will work at transforming three major Indian cities by improving urban mobility and cutting down carbon footprint.

Nagpur is the first city selected, then follow Kochi and Ahmedabad.

India’s Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) and French Development Agency (AFD), on Friday, signed a Grant Facility Agreement of 3.5 million euros, to be financed by the European Union under its Asia Investment Facility (AIF), for implementing the ‘MobiliseYourCity’ initiative.

MobiliseYourCity (MYC) is part of an international initiative supported by the French and the German governments. It was launched at Paris’ 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) in December 2015.

French Development Agency’s Director in India said that the project aims at improving comprehensive mobility plans; adopting a measure-report-verify methodology to follow up on the multiple benefits for the three cities.

More about the initiative:

1. The project seeks to back 100 cities worldwide in three years, which are engaged in sustainable urban mobility planning to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2. India is one of the very first countries to benefit from this initiative.

3. Kochi, Nagpur and Ahmadabad are the cities that stayed in race to be a smart city and get mobilized by earning the grant under the Paris climate agreement.

4. The initiative got highlighted by the Indian and European ministers after Prime Minister’s recent visit to Europe.

5. MYC is also considering expanding itself globally to help as many cities across the world so they can restrict the emissions of greenhouse gas and can promote sustainability.

6. The European Union has confirmed that if the initiative requires more fund, they will help in taking the programme forward by proving loan to make it successful.

It can be mentioned here that the AFD (Agence Francaise du Development), French Development Agency is already involved in Nagpur by being the biggest agency financing Nagpur’s Metro project.

“I am thrilled that India is one of the very first countries to benefit from the MYC initiative. France and India share a vibrant commitment to fight against climate change, and the implementation of Paris Agreement, as it was strongly reaffirmed by President Macron and Prime Minister Modi during their meeting in Paris on June 3,” Thuaudet said.

AFD’s Country Director in India, Nicolas Fornage said the “outcome and efficacy” of the project would be monitored “over a period of three years.”
