Kollam Junction needs more infrastructural development

Kollam Junction has become an abode of most of the special trains during the festival seasons offlate such as Onam, Ramzan, Pooja Holidays, Christmas and Sabarimala Pilgrimmage.

Though a big junction station with enough space, lack of necessary pit lines and maintenance yard for repair and maintenance of the special trains terminating here cause difficulties. More platforms are required to handle the smooth passage of these increasing number of trains.

With the introduction of the MEMU trains by the begining of next year and more trains in the Kollam Punalur BG route expected, Kollam junction will become one of the busiest junction stations in Kerala.

MEMU maintenance shed is already completed at Kollam Junction. Pitlines and shunting yard work is not completed yet.

Railways should provide adequate steps to improve the terminal infrastructure facilities at Kollam Junction with a Second Terminal @ Upasana hospital side, atleast 3 more platforms in the wake of new trains, and a maintenance yard for the BG trains.

More information counters and tourist information centers are required at the extreme end of Platform No 3 and 4 as the ends of these platforms are located almost 1 KM from the station entrance.

Kollam Junction being located at the city centre, good restaurants and shopping centres should be planned at the station premises This may provide more revenue for railways and will be handy for the increasing number of passengers and tourists.

I think there should have been more width for this prestigious road as it is expected to bypass the busy Chinnakada junction. This is a 18 metre road with 7 metres of width on either side and 2 meter wide footpaths on eitherside.

I would love to see the snaps of the road stretch especially where the Ashramam link road touches the 4-lane road. A big traffic round is expected to come at this location which is the meeting point of 4 roads - Link Road, 4-lane road, Residency road and Shankers Hospital road.

Navjot, as you may also think, I believe the Kollam Corporation should name it as MG Road as this road will be one of the prime city inner roads. Moreover, Kollam City does not have any road named after the "Father of the Nation".

Already new commercial shops have come up in this stretch. I have seen a new Kollam Supreme Bakers shop at the Ashramam stretch.

I would love to take a morning stroll at this stretch of the city.

Shencottah, Punalur section gauge conversion to start soon

The shortest rail connectivity between Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram would be restored in three years on completion of the gauge conversion work of the Shencottah-Punalur section, which would be taken up shortly.

Traffic on the metre gauge line on the 45-km stretch, mostly ghat section, would be closed from September 20 to enable the work.
This would be the final leg of the gauge conversion project on the Virudhunagar-Tenkasi-Tirunelveli/Tiruchendur-Kollam section. Broad gauge services on the Virudhunagar-Shencottah and Punalur-Kollam sections were commissioned in phases as and when the works were completed.

“Work on this small portion could not be taken up for its complexities, like the rough terrain, tunnels and sharp curves on the stretch,” a railway official said. The cost of the project, which was around Rs.357 crore in December 2008, has now escalated to Rs.380 crore.

Four-lane road to ease traffic congestion in city

It would be great if the corporation decides to extend the 4- lane road upto Chinnakkada Round with 18 metre width and footpaths through the existing Residency road. Anyway, it is a great news that the Ashramam link road that ends at KSRTC bus station premises would now be extented to Highschool junction through the Ashtamudi lake banks via Nani Memorial hospital junction.
