Maharaja’s set for reunion
Quote:
To some it was a political cradle, to many others it provided personal relationships that endured a lifetime. Maharaja's College is alma mater to a large number of famous people and on Saturday they come together to relive those formative experiences.

Among those who will come calling for Maharajakeeyam 2012, its alumni meet, are A K Antony, Vayalar Ravi, Mammootty, Salim Kumar and Dileep. Film directors Siddique and Amal Neerad will also be present, so will former ISRO chief and the brain behind Chandrayaan project, Kasturi Rangan. K former comrades R Gowri and T M Thomas Isaac and Infosys CEO S Shibulal too will grace the occasion.

The campus days of many of its illustrious sons and daughters adorn the souvenir prepared specially for this meet. For Antony, Maharaja's is like a morning breeze that brought him joy. Vayalar Ravi recalls the days when he fell in love with Maria Francis aka Mercy of Kattikkaran family, who later became his wife. The eastern side of the botany department, where they took the vow to tie the knot, still remains etched in his memory.

The college was the political laboratory for many students who went on to become powerful leaders. And for actors like Mammootty, Salim Kumar and Dileep it was where they learned the ropes of their trade. It was in this campus that their movie dreams blossomed.

Her Intermediate days in the college remain crystal clear in veteran communist leader K R Gowri's mind even after seven decades. Memories of college-mates like Changampuzha Krishna Pillai, Malayalam's greatest romantic poet, still remain fresh in her mind.

Former CPM leader and minister V Viswanatha Menon has a tale to narrate of freedom struggle fought from the campus. It was from Maharaja's that he and his comrades started the self-determination struggle for a united Kerala. Mammootty had no qualms confessing that had it not been Maharaja's, his life would have been entirely different.

A return journey into memories for Maharaja's Alumni

Quote:
Dear Meharu, your face turns the colour of the rising sun when you get angry... Hope you will invite me for your wedding. My address is given below... Note: I won’t be bringing any gifts,” read out actor Mammootty from a faded, torn piece of paper.

This was no dialogue from a tearjerker movie, rather, it was the actor’s own words, which he had penned down in the autograph-book of Meharu Moideen, his senior in college, way back in 1972.

“She must have been really beautiful then,” quipped Mammootty, as he strained to recollect the face of the senior he fancied, while speaking at ‘Maharajakeeyam-2012’, held at Maharaja’s College in Kochi on Saturday.

The compere took this opportunity and announced, “If Meharu is here for the function, we request you to please come on stage.” To everyone’s surprise, Meharu stood up from amongst the audience and slowly walked to the dais. Much older, but still as vibrant, she spent the next few minutes talking to her famous ‘junior’ and sharing snippets from her life, with him.

Mammootty’s old classmates also joined the gang and reintroduced themselves to him. “I would love to meet each and every one of my old classmates and spend some memorable moments with their families. But alas, I am scared of these guys,” the actor said, pointing towards the throng of fans that had formed a tight-knit circle around the stage.

Nostalgia ruled the campus as many others, like Mammootty and Meharu, revisited the good old times with their peers, classmates and friends at their alma mater.

For all those nameless but shining faces that refused to move out of the sprawling Maharaja’s grounds well into the evening, the reunion event added another chapter to the legacy of having been a student at an institution that is itself a part of history. The regal corridors, steepling staircases and hallowed corners of the famous college saw the alumni recapturing fragrant memories from their time spent in its iconic campus.

The Academy will be started in collaboration with Kerala Government. The prime reason to start the project is because there is a gap of required talent and actual talent available in the market, as many engineering and management institutes continue traditional program curriculum. Along with its internal training facilities, programs of the academy will be extended to major engineering and management institutes, to enhance quality of the talent

Indo-German Centre for Water Technology and Management soon in Kochi

Quote:
The SCMS Group of Kochi is setting up an Indo-German Centre for Water Technology and Management. It will shortly become operational at the SCMS School of Engineering and Technology (SSET).

Germany is way ahead in the field of water technology, conservation and management. This will be the first international research project undertaken by the SSET Centre for Research Consultancy and Innovation in Engineering and Technology, the research division of SCMS Engineering College.

Modern and energy-efficient technologies for treatment of water and waste water are becoming crucially important to ensure safe drinking water at an affordable cost and in adequate quantity.

Adaption of these technologies for Indian conditions will be the main focus of the Indo-German Centre, says Prof. (Dr) C. K. Rajan, who will coordinate the activities in his capacity as its Director at SCMS.

He is currently Professor-in-Charge, Chair for Climate and Environmental Changes and Risk Reduction at SCMS, Kochi. He is also a former Director of the Centre for Monsoon Studies at the Cochin University for Science and Technology.

Dwelling on the rationale for setting up the project, Prof. Rajan said the per-capita availability of water in India is depleting sharply despite adequate rainfall.

Study reports suggest that most cities in the country will face a water crisis by the end of this decade.

The World Bank has ranked Delhi as the worst performing city in Asia on water availability, followed by Mumbai.

Pollution is rampant and river water is mostly unfit for drinking. Rapid development and urbanisation will escalate the demand for water far beyond availability.

Prof. (Dr) Johannes Fritsch from the University of Applied Sciences in Weingarten, Germany, will head the department and be the group leader at the Indo-German Centre.

TREATMENT TECH

A reputed specialist in advanced membrane technology for water treatment, he will spearhead activities aimed at assimilating most advanced water and waste-water treatment technologies locally.

A process laboratory will be developed at SCMS Engineering College to carry out new water technology processes that marry them to special demands and also scale them up to needed capacity.

These services will be made available on a contract basis to external customers, Prof. Rajan said.

Water is increasingly turning a precious and expensive commodity in many parts of the world. Depleting supply of fresh water from conventional sources is a matter of concern, he added.

This serves to highlight the imperative need for developing alternative water sources including the reuse and recycling of waste water, storm water and rain water.

CUSAT's talent hunt for future scientists
Quote:
It was a day to cherish for a group of bright eighth standard students from across the State when they got an opportunity to do scientific experiments and fire away questions to an IAS officer.

“We were on a journey to an entirely different world that begins with atoms and extends all the way up to the Antarctica Sea.

The session with Swagath Bhandari IAS, Assistant Collector, Ernakulam, was really motivational. It was an eye-opener when she told us how she chose her career and overcame the hurdles,” said Atul Raj, student of HSS Srikrishnapuram, Palakkad.

He was among the 60 students selected for ‘Inculcate 2012’ held at CUSAT campus in Kochi after a state-wide competitive exam held by the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum (KSSTM).
The idea was to spot talent in basic sciences early and mould them by offering scholarships at school-level.

“Nowadays, only a few among the bright students opt for courses other than medicine or engineering. So the programme is an attempt to attract talented students to basic sciences,” Dr Girish Kumar K, Professor, Department of Applied Chemistry, CUSAT, said.

A total of 20,000 students sat for the exam that tested their knowledge in basic sciences and 300 of them came out trumps.

“They were divided into five groups of 60 before they attended the talent pruning camps at five universities including CUSAT.

Each university will select 50 students and provide them a monthly stipend of Rs 750 till they pass the 12th standard exam. Mentors will be allotted to them to help them excel in their chosen field,” Kumar said.

Swagath Bhandari termed the interaction “vibrant” and observed that the kids were really curious about the happenings around them.

“I asked them to choose a career according to their capability and aptitude and cultivate the habit of reading,” she told Deccan Chronicle.

“One student asked me why I chose civil service to which I replied that my idea was to serve the poor. He then said there were so many other ways to serve the poor,” she said, smiling.
