The number of seats for various courses too will be increased and various part-time courses will be started. The university will approach the Centre for making it a Central Government institution.

Kochi hopes to get its Innovation University under 12th year Plan

Quote:
The proposal for setting up of world class universities in 14 states is awaiting clearance by the Law Ministry, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said.

Replying to questions in the Rajya Sabha, Purandeswari said the government is also planning to set up higher educational institutions in the 374 educationally backward blocks in the country.

The National Development Council had approved setting up of 14 world-class universities for innovation across the 11th and 12th plan periods on the public private partnership model.

The innovation universities are part of the Ministry of Human Resource Development's (MHRD) "brain gain" policy to attract global.

The proposed universities will be set up in Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Amritsar, Greater Noida, Patna, Guwahati, Kolkata, Bhopal, Gandhinagar, Coimbatore, Mysore, Pune, Visakhapatnam and Jaipur.

According to Ministry, three distinct approaches are possible in establishing these Innovation Universities.

First, new Innovation Universities focused on distinct issues of national importance to India and building various disciplines and fields of research around such issues.

The second approach is to identify a few among existing universities and other institutions of repute, and help these attain world class standards through innovation in chosen areas of knowledge with marginal top-up investment.

The third approach is to identify a few educational hubs (cities) in the country where institutions and universities of excellence by national standards are located, and creating the architecture of an Innovation University by building synergies for inter-disciplinarily and strong research and teaching within these institutions.

CUSAT plans big for Engineering talents and research areas

Quote:
There is good news for young engineering talents at the Cochin University of Science and Technology.

B.Tech students in the self-financing sector of the university will soon be recognised for their skills thanks to a proposal being included in the university budget for 2012-13.

Lopus Mathew, convener of the finance standing committee of the Syndicate, said that the university would pick up the best projects in each engineering stream and provide incentives to the students who have worked behind them.

The final semester project would be considered for the award.

The best project in each branch of engineering, which is related to industry, will be given an award comprising a certificate and a cash prize of Rs.10,000. The modalities and criteria for identifying the best project will be finalised later, he said.

Research

Prof. Mathew said that the university has done commendable work in stepping up its research activities. Thirty externally funded research projects worth Rs. 36.12 crore were taken up by various departments in 2011-12. This includes one unique and high-value project worth Rs. 19.98 crore awarded to the Department of Atmospheric Sciences for establishing a ‘Stratosphere Troposphere (ST) Radar' in Kochi, he said.

The university had also received the sanction for additional assistance under 11th Five Year Plan for purchase of teaching aids and equipment (Rs.1 crore); starting a course in Master of Fisheries Science in ‘Seafood Safety & Trade' under ‘Innovative Programmes' (Rs. 50 lakh); and Development Assistance for Upgrading of Existing Management Department (Rs. 46 lakh).

The university has constituted a committee to prepare proposals to be submitted before the University Grants Commission under the 12th Five Year Plan. Prof. Mathew said that the university expects at least three to five times hike in the financial support during the 12th Plan period.

New Kendriya Vidyalaya at Thrikkakara
Quote:
The District Collector has allotted four acres of land to build a Kendriya Vidyalaya Bhavan at Thrikkakara. The decision was taken at a meeting with the Kendriya Vidyalaya Secretary on Wednesday. “At least 5,000 applications are filed for admission to the Kendriya Vidyalayas in Ernakulam every year. Of these, only 100 to 120 are accepted,” District Collector Sheik Pareeth said.

In the initial phase during the new academic year, classes will begin for students up to Class IV. These classes will be held in association with the UP schools in Thrikkakara.

I think there is nothing new in the offing. They have named all of their institutions together as a Knowledge city, that's it.

Still its good, as bringing together in one cluster adds more momentum for making a deemed university, once Kerala govt takes a favourable decision as well as bring into creating more self sustained campus in Kalady. It only favours adding more knowledge centres in one place itself.......

They now have made a small sleepy village into a major knowledge hub. Perhaps a medical college might be something only remaining.....

IIM Kozhikode planning to set up a satellite campus at Kochi, mainly focusing on executive education

KOLKATA: IIM Kozhikode is planning to set up a satellite campus at Kochi, mainly focusing on executive education.

The institute, which has an internationally accredited executive management education program, intends to use the proposed campus to expand its offerings in this space by starting full-time and part-time programs targeted at middle and senior level executives.

The satellite campus will be initially housed within Infopark and will focus primarily on executive education - both long term and short term as well as specialised courses for executives of the IT sector.

Initially, the satellite centre will be offering one-year executive MBA program as well as two-year part-time programs in addition to a large number of short duration Management Development Programs.

By positioning its satellite campus in Kochi, IIM Kozhikode is planning to support the growth and development of business and industry in the region.

In addition to offering executive training and education programs, the satellite campus will also support IIMK's mission of inclusive education as the institute is planning to incubate a finishing school to offer specialised programmes for people belonging to the marginalised sections of the society.

However, this will be taken up once the full fledged campus is functional at Kochi. The initial facility inside Infopark is expected to be functional by October 2012 and hope to start its offerings before the end of 2012.

The Institute also expects to complete the full campus within next three years.

So in another 3 years, we can expect another Edu campus in Kochi. IIRC, the 5 acre campus will come up in Infopark.

IIM Kozhikode to open new temporary campus in Kochi; to offer executive MBA
Quote:
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode is going to be starting a new campus in Kochi later this year for delivering its Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP). The campus, for now, will be situated at Infopark, a technology park, which already boasts of companies such as TCS, Cognizant, Wipro, Etisalat DB Telecom, etc in its premises.

According to an IIM-K spokesman, classes at the new campus will commence by September or October 2012. As of now, the school will only deliver its EPGP programme from Kochi. When asked for the reason behind moving the EPGP away from the main campus at Kozhikode, the reply was that Kochi worked better by way of logistics and connectivity. “Kochi has many more flights going to and fro and is more of a ‘corporate’ place than Kozhikode. Incidentally, Kozhikode also has an airport, which is some 30 kms away from the IIM-K campus and is also well connected via flights, though not as well as Kochi,” the spokesman told PaGaLGuY.

The new campus will be entirely funded by the IIM-K and no help has been sought from the Kerala government. The move to shift the executive classes there came after months of discussions on the subject including with aspiring EPGP students. The consensus was that Kochi appealed much more than Kozhikode to executive students. “The shift is part of our long distance vision of expanding and building a larger base,” said the spokesman.

Situated in the midst of IT companies, the content and instruction in IIM-K’s new campus will also be IT related. The Infopark campus will have its own dean in place, though the IIM-K director will call the final shots. A portion of the IIM-K faculty will be stationed at the new campus while the rest of the faculty will be shared between the main campus and the Kochi campus.

Classes at IIM-K’s Kochi campus will be held inside a large portion of a building which houses other companies as well. “The buildings in the park are massive so even taking over a part of a structure means a lot of space,” the spokesman added. The new campus will have classrooms, a library and seminar rooms.

The classrooms will accommodate a couple of hundred students, the spokesman added. A decision on changing the fees of EPGP will be taken before the new batch signs in.

In addition to EPGP, IIM-K’s social reach programme which is a move to include the socially-disadvantaged into the mainstream and empower them will also be moved to the Kochi campus.

According to IIM-K, the facility at Infopark will be of a temporary nature and talks are being held with the Kerala government for a separate campus in Kochi itself. This new campus will be built in a style and function similar to the existing one at Kozhikode.

Infopark, which was set up by the Kerala government in 2004 is spread across 100 acres. Already, more than a 100 companies have set up headquarters or branch offices and about 18,000 employees work there. The Infopark itself is also on an expansion spree and work is on to add another 160 acres to the existing land.

The spokesman added that the new campus will not halt all new activity at the main campus in Kozhikode. A new complex with 120 rooms, which will be better than rooms in a 5-star hotel, is to come up shortly, he added.

Now, 'Kochi Region' for Kendriya Vidyalaya
Quote:
Finally, the Kendriya Vidyalayas in the state have got a ‘region’ for themselves with the setting up of the Kochi Region, bringing smiles on students, teachers and parents of the state. The Kochi Region, set up a couple of days ago, is functioning temporarily at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kadavanthra.

Earlier, the Kendriya Vidyalayas from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode were under the Chennai region and the remaining schools under the Bangalore region.

Now all the 37 schools in Kerala will be under a region based in Kochi. “We intend to construct the regional office in the KV school as it is centrally located and will send a proposal to the headquarters, said Ranveer Singh who took over as Deputy Commissioner of Kochi Region on Monday.

“I have divided the schools into seven clusters with cluster coordinators for better communication and coordination. I will visit each school to understand the issues. Some schools have a shortage of teachers especially in Hindi and Social Science. We have the quantity as the strength in all schools is high. Now we intend to improve the quality. The class hours have also been increased by 80 minutes,” he said.

When asked about the KV school proposed to be set up in Kakkanad, he said the District Collector has sent a proposal to the headquarters and the matter is under consideration. Only 4 acres of land has been set aside which is not enough. “We need at least five acres to have three and four sections,” he said. Teachers, students and parents have welcomed the move.

“When there is a correction of name in certificates or for any other issue we had to go to Chennai. Now a lot of time and energy can be saved,” said a parent in Kochi.

“We had to make frequent visits to Chennai or Bangalore to sort out any issue. Now the proximity of the regional office will make things easy,” said Sadanandan, regional secretary, KV Teachers Association.

The bifurcation will help in bettering the administration and reduce hardships of parents, teachers and students, said N R Murali, deputy commissioner of Chennai Region.

Most probably , the proposed IIT and IIIT[information technology] will go to Palakad and Thiruvanthapuram , unless a hectic group is taken initiative in this regard .
I too believe, IIM and IIT should be based in Kochi, as it provides more value addition for these institutions.

But at the same time, Kerala cannot afford to lose its policy of distribution of resources equally.... The state of Kerala is unique for able to provide all resources equally to all cities, helping all to grow together at a same time...

As a Kochinite, I too wish, these institutes should be in Kochi. But I don't find fault as a Keralite to see IIM was made to consider Kozhikode and IIT to Palakkad, helping the state's to leap....

What I feel important, is that, State Govt must stop the policy of Govt Only in Higher Education. It should open its door to private universities and research areas, apart from traditional medical/engineering colleges.... Once the concepts of deemed universities with research centres allowed, either in private or PPP mode, we can expect more reputable private universities like Tata's XLRI or Indian Business School or TISS or Welingkar considering Kochi...... Perhaps Academic City in Kochi makes more sense to this direction.....

Equally the govt must lobbying Central Govt to revive up-gradation of CUSAT's engineering wing as IIEST, while making the management school (SMS) as an independent Management University based in Kochi and Social subjects schools like Law, Environment etc into as Cochin University of Social Sciences.

Anyway, Kochi must look forward more private initiatives for its education sector... The upcoming XIME campus is a step forward in this regard.
