Another Solar Success story from Kochi.

Model Engineering College embraces Sun for their power

Quote:
The Model Engineering College is all set to run on solar energy.

The 30kW on-grid solar power plant built with the financial and technical support of students at the college in Thrikakkara has starting lighting up the college and running its equipment.

With the plant becoming operational, the electricity bill of the college will see a reduction of Rs 40,000 from Rs 1.5 lakh a month.

Minister for devaswom and tourism Kadakampally Surendran opened the plant on Thursday in the presence of MLA P.T. Thomas.

The plant was set up as part of the part-time students' final year project and costed Rs 24 lakh.

After subsidy from ANERT, the state government's agency for exploring non-conventional energy sources, the required amount stood at Rs 17.5 lakh.

However, when students, teachers, non-teaching staff and alumni joined hands, it became a reality. Hundred panels of 300W have been installed on the college's rooftop.

Two on-grid inverters of 15kW are also part of the plant, which helps in sending electricity generated directly to the grid instead of storing it in batteries.

When the college is shut, the electricity generated will be given to KSEB, said associate professor M. Pradeep, assistant professor Arun Prasad, and alumni representative C. Ajayakumar.

Apart from educational institutions, all govt offices and other places must have some sort of solar panels installed and generate power as part of Power banking. Infact, KSEB and Govt must make it mandatory that all new independent residential houses above a certain area limit, say 2000 Sqft etc to mandatory have solar power production as power banking with KSEB.

Multiple small generation of power in short will compile a larger pool of electricity.

Maharaja's College plans a mega facelift

Quote:
If everything goes as per the new master plan, Maharaja's will soon have a multi-purpose indoor stadium and a grand convention centre. The indoor stadium is to come up on the western side of the hockey court to facilitate promotion of various sports other than football and hockey, which have separate turfs at the Maharaja's ground. "The new master plan seeks to give a facelift to the grand old college adding various facilities. KITCO is in charge of preparing the master plan and it is in the final stages. Our focus is on turning the college to meet the new requirements without losing its heritage charm. Eminent architect Benny Kuriakose who is associated with the Muziris project, has volunteered to help us keep the balance and he has already made a couple of visits to Maharaja's in this regard," said Mr P.K. Raveendran, chairman of the governing council of the Maharaja's College.

Mr Raveendran said that Maharaja's will have a grand new auditorium in place of the present one which was built in the 1970s. "An auditorium of modern standards which is as good as a convention centre is what we have in mind," he said adding the details are being worked out in the master plan. He said that one of the major issues faced is the lack of toilets in each block. "These days each block is self-contained with all facilities and we have to turn Maharaja's also like that so that conferences and other events can be conducted in these blocks without interruption. Researchers also need such facilities. Maharaja's also lacks space to conduct new courses and for that new blocks have also to be built," he said.

"Good hostels for both girls and boys are on top of agenda and already Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned for the purpose and work started by PWD. The master plan seeks to take care of the long-term development of the campus and from time to various projects for the same will be undertaken," he said. A sum of Rs 30 crore has been sanctioned under KIIFB for giving a facelift to Maharaja's which will be utilized as per the master plan. "Of this a sum of Rs 15 crore will be utilized for infrastructure development, while Rs 5 crore will be used for IT development and Rs 15 crore for modernization of labs," said Dr Sunish K S, a Governing Council member.

He said that KITCO is identified as consultant for the infra project while the State IT Mission is being roped in for the IT project. "Consultant for the modernization of lab project is yet to be identified," he said. Currently a three-storey library complex is being built at the college spending Rs 8 crore, the work of which is expected to be over by next March 31. "This will house all libraries of all departments which all will be on digital platform. There will be associated rooms for research also." An academic block also is to be built and the project in this regard for Rs 10 crore is pending the final clearance of the Higher Education and Finance Departments. "All language departments will be brought under one roof in this block which will be of immense use for the students and teachers alike," Dr Sunish said.

IORA to set up Centre of Excellence in Kochi

Quote:
The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), a common platform of 21 countries including India and geographically bordering the Indian Ocean, is to set up a Centre of Excellence in Kochi.

IORA is a regional forum of countries, tripartite in nature, bringing together representatives of government, business and academia, for promoting co-operation and closer interaction among the Indian Ocean bordering countries. The headquarters of IORA is located at Ebene, Mauritius.

The opening of the IORA Centre of Excellence in Kochi is aimed at facilitating the exchange of research findings and studies, in the field of fisheries and ocean studies, among its member nations.

IORA is considering Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) as a partner to set up Centre of Excellence in Kochi. If the partnership proposal is executed, KUFOS main campus located at Panangad near Kochi will host the IORA Centre of Excellence.

To evaluate the possibilities of establishing Centre of Excellence, an IORA delegation, comprising Sanjay Pande, Joint Secretary, Dept of Foreign Affairs and also the Indian Chief of IORA and Ashima Chaturvedi, Officer on Special Duty, visited KUFOS.

The delegation held discussions with the KUFOS researchers and teachers under the leadership of Vice Chancellor A Ramachandran.

The main objective of the proposed Centre of Excellence in Kochi is to assure that there is no duplication of efforts by member countries in the research and allied activity areas related to fisheries and ocean studies. The Centre Excellence will be digitally linked with IORA member countries and researchers belonging to each member country can access data and information stored in the Centre.
