Five year plans are economic plans, developed and worked out by Planning Commission. India's 12th 5-year plan will happen between 2012 and 2017.

Well Santhosh, it means Kochi is losing out..... IIT is coming up in Palakkad and without IIEST, Kochi is losing..... Well, this decision was because of delay and unscientific approach of previous govt, else CUSAT would have been IIEST by now itself.....

Anyway, lobbying will continue.... If not IIEST, I believe, it should be taken over Central Govt as a Central University, as it cannot attain quality or centre of excellence under State Government.....

Catering college proposed on MPI campus

Quote:
Minister for Agriculture K. P. Mohanan has said that the government has proposed to set up a catering college on the Meat Products of India (MPI) campus at Koothattukulam leveraging the facilities at the campus.

He said that there were land and other facilities available at the MPI campus, which could be utilized to their full potential.

The Minister was inaugurating the new poultry processing unit at the MPI campus, near here on Monday. He said that the proposed catering college, under the Kerala Veterinary University, could utilize the facilities at the MPI campus, including the upcoming food quality control laboratory.

The new poultry processing plant is among the several new facilities being added to the government-owned MPI, which is the largest meat processing unit in the State in the organized sector.

The MPI sources said that launching a catering college would help both MPI and the proposed training facility, as the existing facilities could be leveraged, and research and development activities could be augmented.

The new poultry processing plant has the capacity to dress 4,000 birds a day and is the largest such facility in the State now, said the managing director of the MPI, Ani S. Das.

Minister for Excise and Ports K. Babu presided at the meeting, which marked the inauguration of the new facilities at the MPI, including the chilling and curing plant and a biogas plant, which will handle the organic waste originating in the meat processing unit.

The new facilities, being added at a total investment of Rs. 2.5 crore, include a new pig rearing farm and poultry and animal feeds production facilities. The new poultry bird processing plant costs approximately Rs. 45 lakh while the chilling and freezing unit costs around Rs. 75 lakh. The new bio-gas plant, taking care of the waste from the MPI units costs around Rs. 25 lakh.

Online B School in the city

Quote:
KOCHI: 361 Degree Minds, an online B School, has launched its learning centre in Kochi. It offers MBA in marketing management, financial management and Human Resources Management besides BBA. "We planned this venture as campuses are unable to accommodate students who are desiring to do MBA or BBA or those who want to study at their own pace and schedule," said its founding director C P Gopinathan and co-founder P Ram Mohan at a press conference. They said that it would be regular college-like. Live classes, online lectures, interactive sessions and archives are the other features.

"We're getting a good response from the learning centre started in Chennai a few months ago," they said. Aligned to Annamalai University, 361 has examination centres wherever the varsity has.

Corporation facelift to SRV UP School

Quote:
KOCHI: The renovation work of the ceiling of SRV UP School, Ernakulam, is in progress. The school which is an ancient landmark in the city will soon lose its traditional look as the good old tiles are being replaced by GI sheets. The school was set up in 1845. Only the UP and LP sections are being renovated while the high school section is being preserved a heritage building.

“During the rainy season, the classes are flooded and we have mop the classes dry,” said Jijo John, a student. Rain water seeps in through the broken tiles and gaps in the wooden ceiling and it is very difficult to maintain the replaced tiles and decaying wood, said the school headmistress. A lot of time is wasted in moving children to other rooms. Moreover, students tend to break the tiles during play, she said. Things may fall off the roof on the students’ heads and it is not healthy to sit in damp classes, she added.

The roof work of the LP section is over and the tiles of the UP section ceiling are being replaced with GI sheets that are light and lasting. The wooden ceiling is being retained. “We are happy that the tiles are being replaced,” said a few students.

However, there are others who disagree. A teacher of the high school Unnikrishnan said, “The traditional tile roofing is better as it is ideal for all weather. The school must preserve its heritage.

”Some non-teaching staff said, “The sound of rain will disturb the class and the classroom may turn warmer during summer.” But some teachers of the UP section said, “Fans will be fixed in all the classrooms.

”Now the UP classes are being taken in the library and staff room. The work is being delayed due to the shortage of labourers. The Kochi Corporation has taken up the work. The authorities are clueless about when the work will be completed. Until then, the students and the teachers will have to face inconvenience.

Browse through your favourite book 26x7

Quote:
KOCHI: Tired of parading in and out of libraries? Here is a happy news for book lovers. Now, books will be just a click away. Yes, this is true. All you need to do is visit the website www.ReadersWeb.com.

A group of three youngsters- Casey Nestor Fernandez, Romana Correya and Mellwyn Joseph, who are extremely passionate about reading, have started an organisation named 26x7, which solely aims at promoting the joys of reading."Though Kerala is said to have one of the best literacy rates in the country, the ground reality is that the readership rate in the state is on the decline," says Casey Nestor.

Under 26x7, they promote the joy of reading through a couple of their initiatives such as lending library (home reading service), a book lovers' discussion forum (BookTime) and through other mediums leveraging on the latest technologies available.

"In this busy world, we mostly come across people who are reluctant to go to a library because of the lack of time. Another reason is the absence of libraries near their homes. To banish those excuses and bring youngsters more closer to books we have started the home reading service project Readers' Web to help book lovers," Casey says.

"26x7 represents the number of letters in English. It is a must to know about the trends in reading in Kochi. So, we visited many colleges and libraries in the district to know about the reading trends," he says.

"The readers can see the details of books and their covers online, but couldn't access the content. You don't have to pay online. You have to pay only after the first delivery," he says.

Their another initiative BookTime was inauguarted on November 26. It conducts storytelling and reading sessions for children. Writer Anwar Abdullah inaugurated the function. "Ours is the first kind of library which can be read simply sitting at home," he said. "For this we left our jobs and sold our cars to meet the money for starting the project. One of our members Mellwyn is working as we don't want to turn to someone else for financial assistance in times of emergencies.

"Casey, an engineering graduate in bioinformatics has worked with Johnson & Johnson, Delhi. Romana Correya is a graduate from St Teresa's College, and Mellwyn Joseph a BTech graduate in biotechnology.

Faculty from eighteen colleges in the state will get together at the SCMS School of Engineering and Technology for a four-day long workshop on J2E. Mock drills in Kochi schools

Quote:
Mock drills to overcome hazards posed by natural calamities will be carried out in select city schools and corporation divisions shortly.

The initiative comes as part of the Urban Risk Reduction Programme, which is supported by the United Nations Development Programme, in Kochi Corporation. It is estimated that over 10,000 school students and residents of 25 divisions of the corporation will be part of the exercise, said Tinu Rose Francis, city project officer.

Mock drills will be carried out in the schools in December. A similar exercise will be carried out for the city residents to face the challenges before January. The programme attains significance in the wake of possible vulnerabilities of the city to calamities like a dam failure.

The UNDP project, which was initiated in all city corporations in 2010, will conclude next year.

Disaster management experts are also planning to train civic authorities, including the Kochi Mayor, in the fundamentals of risk reduction. It had organised such a programme during the term of the previous council.

School safety programmes covering natural hazards and motor accidents were carried out as part of the programme

34 more schools to have e-toilets

Quote:
Soon, 34 more schools can enjoy the e-toilet facility in the district. The Government Girls High School in Ernakulam is the first school in the country to have e-toilet with five units on the campus. It was opened with much fanfare on July 29 this year.

“The construction work of e-toilets in 34 school is in different stages. We hope to complete it soon. They will be opened within a month,” said P Rajeeve MP who initiated the scheme for government and aided schools under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).

“This is part of the [email protected] school project. For a month, the units at GGHS were under study. Time was also spent on obtaining administrative, technical sanction and work orders,” he said.

“We conducted a survey to see the requirements of each school and 27 schools came forward. But, seven aided schools backed out due to the condition that 20 percent of the cost should be borne by them. Since this is a new concept, 15 more government schools showed interest. More than 105 units will be set up soon,” he said.

Rajeeve added that after three years, the PTA has to take up its maintenance. It will take about `5,000 annually and can be utilised from the Panchayat Minister’s fund,” he said.

The toilets are fully automated with mechanism for floor cleaning after 10 visits and water regulation. Some are girl-friendly with incinerators to dispose of sanitary napkins.

“The toilets are very useful, but we do have problems. As we are using borewell water, the iron contents clog the pump. Flush also does not work, all depends on the sensor. Moreover, the units are quite cost-effective. But, the service is prompt. For three years the service is free after which maintenance will be an issue,” said Mathew C J, a teacher at GGHS.

Deputy Director of Education M D Murali said work had been completed in a few schools while it was in progress in the rest.

“In some, only the foundation has been laid,” he said. The number of units will vary in different schools, from two to six. Each unit costs `1.5 lakh. An amount of `1 crore has been sanctioned from the MP fund and the Kochi Refineries Ltd offered a cheque of `40 lakh for the purpose. The cost of the project is `1.5 crore.

Keltron is the implementing agency of the project with technical assistance from Eram Scientific Solutions (P)Ltd. “We have got a proposal for 35 schools, but received orders for only 24 schools. The work is progressing,” said Suresh Kumar S, GM (Marketing), Keltron.
