What Do You Think of Riverside And San Bernardino

I have a relative who moved out to Riverside yesterday, from the Detroit area. He says his job is in San Bernardino. What can you tell me about this part of LA? Discuss.

I live in Riverside.

It isn't awful by any means. I mean it has a nice downtown and it's a very large mid sized city (little more than 300,000). But I can't see myself living here much longer.

And San Bernardino is gross.

FYI: Neither Riverside nor San Berdo is in LA.

San Bernardino and Riverside are nice options if you want to but a town home, and wants to live in a fast developing area. Personally, I would never move there, to get to LA, there is always a whole mess of traffic. Plus it get about 95 + degrees in the summer.

I wouldn't live there. I hate warm weather and houses aren't cheap there anymore.

I love the name San Bernardino for some reason. Does anyone have any pics of Riverside and SB?

Riverside is pretty cool.. sure it's "suburban" and goes against all things SSC stands for but who cares? I think it's cool..

Those pics give a false perception of the Inland Empire. I grew up in Corona, which is next to Riverside, and the most of the area is working class commuters who are heading into OC or LA. The traffic within the IE and out of the IE is horrendous, but it does make you closer to the desert and the river if you like dirt bikes and boating. There are quite a few nice family neighborhoods, especially off of the I-15 freeway, but some extend even farther east. There is a small downtown in both Riverside and San Bernardino, but they are quite small and not "happening" at all. The Mission Inn in downtown Riverside is very nice though and many famous/powerful people have stayed there. Theres also a few universities out there and I knew people who went to both (UC Riverside and CSU San Bernardino). Both are commuter schools with minimal student housing and not much to do around them, leaving the students to commute to OC or LA for fun. Also, the IE has for many, many years had the worst air pollution in the country. The pics posted above are also misleading in that manner. I lived on the hillside on the southern part of the IE and it was very normal to have such low visibility from smog that you could only the see the peaks of the mountains on the northern part of the IE. Everything else was just a brown haze.

The following cities in the I.E. are shit:

Corona
Rialito
A large chunk of Fontana
Moreno Valley
Rancho Cucuamonga (aside from the area around Victoria Gardens)
Rubidoux
San Berdo

Which is not to say that Riverside is nirvana. But I would much rather live here than anywhere else in the big and bad I.E.

As I expected it looks something more like Phoenix, AZ than it does like the coastal parts of LA. I imagine it must be quite hot, dry, and desert like there.

Its hot in the summer months, but no where as bad as Phoenix. It's dry compared to the coastal region, but nothing like Arizona, the High Desert or Las Vegas. The Inland Empire is slightly greener than those places. Actually there are some beautiful cities within the region, such as Clairemont, Upland, Loma Linda, Redlands. All of these cities are very green with lush trees everywhere. Even the older parts of Ontario have some beautiful homes, but most of the I.E. is track homes, and your typical suburban communities. If you ever come visit, make sure you visit those cities I mentioned that are beautiful. Clairemont has a Ivy League look and feel with a village surrounding the private colleges. which is a must see. Redlands has the University of Redlands, and the city has a lot of upper class residents. Its looks very Beverly Hills like, but with out the flashyness. Kinds feels more old money, instead of new money. If I had to live in the I.E. places like Clairemont, Upland, perhaps parts of Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga would be my choices. Loma Linda and Redlands are nice, but they are a bit further away from LA than I want to be. The other cities at least are serviced by Metrolink into LA in about an hour commute.

I have mixed feelings. One one hand the area is very picturesque, there are mountains, deserts, Big Bear lake etc. But on another hand I would think twice about buying a house there because at least S. Bernardino is on the faultline (earthquakes), sometimes the whole town is also covered by dust and smog and highways are very windy.

But considering that most homes are most likely built to withstand some serious quakes, you can also buy insurance to safeguard your property against any loss, escape dust by driving to the beach on weekends no wonder the whole area is so popular. It's very affordable and accessible.

I would still prefer a small condo in westside LA than a big house in Inland Empire, but that's just me.

S. Bernandino needs something that attracks people. Maybe a speedway, or a theme park. The area is just live work but where's the play. I know it is not as bad as I'm describing it, but it needs something bigger and bolder to get in the map. It'll be cool if they hosted some sort of mountian/ dirkbike/ offroad event.
