Wartime Memories

Pictures of the devastation. There were many more on the pre-hack Philippine forums. Can we get them back together on this thread again?

EDIT (05/05/05) - I shamelessly stole these pictures from http://www.ussslater.org/history/duty-ww2.html

I don't remember. I just did a google images search for "Manila." And this came in like page 14. It's the official homepage of the USS Slater. The rest of the pics were from other port of calls and training assignments.

In that last photo, I thought those were "zebra stripes" for pedestrian crossings. After looking at it more closely, they were some sort of concrete blocks or beams on the street, does anyone know what they are, and what purpose it serves? Also, which part of Manila was that photo taken from?

I heard Manila was the most devastated city in the allied side (disregarding Warsaw). Talk about attrition...

Hey--that's a temporary bridge made of hewn wood, typical of the makeshift replacements that came up toward the later part of 1945 (can you imagine getting those same tropical hardwoods in those dimensions today?) They're crossing the estero that separates Escolta from Santa Cruz Church; the buildings in the background are the groundfloors of (L) Regina Bldg, and (R) the Perez-Samanillo Bldg. Hope this answers your query...
