Derby Uni – Markeaton Street Facility Opens 2007

From the Derby Uni website, "We're really excited that we'll soon be opening the first bespoke arts, design and technology facility built in England this Millennium. And you could be one of the first students to study here!"

The building is now finished ready for the new students, go to http://www.derby.ac.uk/markeaton to see more. Apparently Sir Richard Branston is going to officially open the new facility.

These projects are all really exciting, its great to see Derby making a stand for itself in the East Mids developments!

I was wondering about something that you Derby folk can help with,

An article picked up on by one of the Nottingham forumers Danz013 from Westfield suggested that Broadmarsh would not impact on Eagle centre or vice versa as only 5% of people actually travel from Derby into Nottingham to do any shopping. Do you think this is an accurate figure?

I just wonder as with Eagle Centre, Highcross (shires) Leicester and Broadmarsh, there are going to be three mega retail centres comparitivly close to each other.

I find this figure very hard to believe. Nottingham is a retail destination in the East Midlands, so why wouldn't Derby residents travel there? It would be like saying people in Burton prefer not to shop in Derby.

I guess it all depends on how the figure quoted is calculated? Is it as a percentage of the total population of Derby, over what time frame etc. I mean what percentage of the population go shopping on any given day and of that percentage how many choose to go to Nottingham?

Derby College Roundhouse Project

The final piece of the funding jigsaw is now in place, giving Derby College the official go ahead to develop Derby 's historic Roundhouse. Trustees of the Heritage Lottery Fund have officially approved the project, awarding a grant for £4.2 million, completing funding for the £36 million development, which will open to students early in 2009.

As a grade II* listed building, in line with English Heritage, many of the Roundhouse's original features will be restored, maintaining the overall character of the building. The development will involve the restoration of the main Roundhouse building, which currently houses a central turntable used to move engines around when the Roundhouse was still in use for its original purpose of repairing steam engines, as well as the nearby newer buildings which will be developed as an annex.

As well as being the College's flagship site, the Roundhouse will be opened as a visitor centre and social hub for people to meet and learn more about the City's history in line with the Heritage Lottery Fund's requirements.

Westfield Derby – Latest pics

A few pics showing how Westfield Derby is shaping up, only a few months to go before the big opening day in October. The pics don't show much of the dodgy looking car park on top (hopefully its not finished) and the huge silver box housing the new cinema.

The Rams, thanks for the pics... i'm glad i've finally had chance to see Westifeld Derby...

I got a few points and question...

- I don't think it looks that bad. Its not amazing architecturally but its a shopping centre. The colours and quality reminds me of the style used on the Bullring (not the Selfridges store obviously).

- When is this supposed to open?
- One the first and third pictures what are those things on the roof?

I'd love to see Derby council really push hard to change the images of Derby. Bradford has a really innovative scheme. Derby is a similar size to Bradford, I see no reason why it couldn't do a similar thing.

St Alkmund's Bridge

Plans for a new £1.3m footbridge over St Alkmund's Way, which reflects the industrial heritage of Derby with unique design features and will be a major part of the city's improved public realm, have been unveiled. Derby City Council and Derby Cityscape have commissioned public art design specialist Dennis O'Connor to create the unique bridge, which will link the city centre with St Mary's Church.

Design features include:
• Bobbin shaped pillars at either end reflecting those used in the early days of the nearby Silk Mill
• Specially-crafted balustrades and hand rails depicting the tapes made on the factory looms of the Silk Mill
• Environmentally friendly lighting which is confined to the footbridge to reduce the glare and potential distraction for the motorists that use the ring road underneath daily

Jurry's Inn Derby

New Jurry's Inn hotel, leisure and apartment development planned for the north side of King Street. Still waiting on construction to start but i've heard that it's planned to open in 2009. The image I found doesn't give too much away, does any body have any better renders of this development?

I saw a report on the Eagle Centre on East Midlands Today this week. Anyone else see it? It was basically just derby residents moaning about how ugly that big grey box of a cinema is, and I have to agree to be honest. It's bloody awful - surely they could have designed something a little more imaginative than this? It now dominates the Derby skyline... in a very bad way.

Westfield Cinema

The cinema at Westfield Derby wasn't in the original plans but added as construction was starting to take place a few years ago. There has never been any artist impressions of the huge cinema building released in the local press, if there had i'm sure it would of caused an outcry in the city.

It's great that we are getting a new cinema but I blame the council for letting Westfield get away with building such an ugly dominating building. Also I don't believe that Westfield will improve on the look when the cinema opens next spring. I've seen the plans for the Cine-delux in Leicester and it looks far more interesting and I think both developments have cost about the same to construct.

'Eat Central' Westfield Derby

Here's an artist impression of the new 800-seat foodcourt called 'Eat Central' featuring local independent and London-based eateries.

These include Hamburger Union, Nincomsoup, Pieminister, Sumo Salad, Hana Puri, Pepitos, Yangtze Thai Noodle Bar, Yangtze Express, Pasta 4 U, Hey Potato, KFC, and Quiznos.
