DMK did not raise MTC fare last time directly. They did indirectly by running lot of ottai buses as Luxury buses and collected high fare to meet the bleeding operational expenses.
Due to high inflation and Diesel prices, ADMK govt did not have any choice and they raised the fare. But when they raised the bus fare, they did too much. There is no value of price raise. they should have improved operational expense, by reducing the corruption and increased marginal price hike. but they preferred other way and did a steep rise, as usual gave a crap excuse of comparing with other States. People did not see the value of money, and hence they switched to private transport, sub-urban trains. still, we have some morons in MTC, who keeps arguing that they are competing with sub-urbans instead of providing integrated modal of transport. ![]() ![]() Real gainers were owners of Share Autos, Tata magic. and high time for Govt to legalize Tata magic. have a strict regulation on share Autos.

after the price hike last year few argued that they would increase the maintenance of the buses... but the reality is that even the AC buses numbered around 100 are not maintained properly by MTC, let alone the normal buses(read thagar dabba buses)... there was no AC effect in the buses, the A/C vents were missing and damaged... the interior of the buses are turning black.... in normal buses doors are not operating.. the buses are dirty all over, seats are damaged etc etc
I'm wondering whether there is any maintenance dept in MTC at all..

IMHO, the MTC fare hike was absolutely necessary....
Bangalore and Mumbai fares are even higher... Definitely sunset has done cheating by introducing such deluxe buses cleverly/cunningly - vazapathla oosi kuthara maathiri or knife slicing a butter cube... It was so cunning and subtle that people dint recognise it... But 3 leaves did it openly and got blasted by people... She should have also slowly converted all white board and yellow board buses to deluxe by just changing the nameplate - people won't even recognise it |

Translation in Nutshell (my own words) Will Vandalur terminus follow the footsteps of Velachery and Madhavaram and remain a paper project??? DMK leader Karunanidhi has interrogated the govt as to whether the envisaged Vandalur terminus will also remain a paper project in lines similar to Madhavaram and Velachery. Karunanidhi has bashed the govt asking how the Vandalur terminus will materialise amassing, capturing and grabbing the agricultural lands... Karunanidhi also recalled age old history digging what MGR, the then Chief Minister promised something to Vandalur people. |

TOI article .... Comment: Possibly some ray of hope...
![]() ![]() ![]() Shanthi S had never seen an autodriver turn on the meter in the seven years she has lived in the city. On Monday, when she hailed an auto to go to a medical centre, she was in for a surprise. “I was prepared to pay 50 from Pondy Bazaar to G N Chetty Road, a distance o f l e s s t h at 1.5km,” she said. “The first driver asked for 60. As I waited for another auto, one with a bright yellow sign caught my attention. The driver just asked where I wanted to go and switched on his meter. I paid only 25.” Namma Auto, a company launched by two friends to ensure that commuters pay a fixed fare for auto rides, put 17 of its fleet on the road on Sunday. On May 6, the Supreme Court set the state a deadline of July 6 to come up with a new tariff structure for autorickshaws. They’re all steps that have commuters’ hopes for regulated fares riding high on three wheels. It’s been more than a decade since Chennai had a foolproof metered system, and Namma Auto has just scratched the surface of the city’s auto culture of fleecing commuters. As Shiva Shankar, a Namma Auto driver, turned into a lane in West Mambalam, other auto drivers followed him with surprise. They were curious about the system and many were quite supportive of the initiative to bring back the meter. “With a meter and a fixed fare and patronage, my income would go up,” said S Karunakaran, an auto driver from Padi. He isn’t one of the company’s drivers but said the drivers getting a salary is what made it viable. Most drivers say they earn between 800 and 1,000 a day. Namma Auto driver K Palanivel collected more than 600 in fares in just two hours, making five trips and covering 62km. With a minimum fare of 25 for the first 2km and 10 per additional km, he received 657 from customers in two hours. Others have also tried to bring order to the chaos. A few months ago, another company Auto Raja started a call centre for autos with fixed rates. Last year, a couple of techies set up a website that provided fares based on crowd-sourcing and the rates set by the government. A Kalavathy, another commuter who wanted to go from South Usman Road to Mambalam railway station, was prepared to haggle on Monday. “I live in Maraimalai Nagar, which is well connected by suburban train but the problem is getting to the station,” said the nurse from Tambaram general hospital. “I often spend more on the last leg of the journey than I do on the entire train ride. Autos with working meters are the only option.”

Even if 20% of Chennai's autos run on non-tampered fair meters, it's a great success..
Slowly it will spread to other autos if people start shunning cheater-cock auto drivers... Sort of an avalanche reaction or chain reaction... I desperately hope that this scheme doesn't die down.. Mainly we should keep the cocoon shelled regional political elements, thugs and goons at bay... In Trichy, metered autos were launched recently (refer trichy transportation thread), but many of the auto drivers have been threatened and their autos were vandalised by other unfair, auto drivers who have nexus with political elements, thugs and goons... Few quit out of fear, but such vandalism and hooliganism has not be a deterrent to the remaining few meter-auto drivers... Let's just hope something good happens in Chennai... Fair Metered autos will erase the tarnished image the city's transport network has... |

Autos will anyway reduce when metro rail(all phases) becomes operational. Fair autos with non-tampered meters will be an excellent feeder service.
