Change is the only magic word now in Coastal Karnataka,MANGALORE: They marched to polling booths first time in their life determined to make a change. Unhappy with the recent incidents like attacks on pub and homestay, they wanted to give a befitting reply to the self-proclaimed moral brigades of the town by participating in the democratic process.
"We need a change. We are sick of stupid incidents like attacks on the homestay," said 21-year-old Paul Simon, an MBBS student, who cast his vote for the first time.
"Instead of just talking about such incidents, youths have to vote if they want to usher in a in this region," he added.
Shivarakshith, 20, another MBBS students and a first-time voter, said that it was the recent attacks of youths in the name of culture and morality that made him exercise his franchise. "If youths do not vote for the right candidates, the practice of moral policing will continue in this region," he said.
A few minutes before casting her vote, Shavari Shetty, 19, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery student, urged youths to vote without fail. "It is our responsibility as the citizens of this country. We have to maintain peace in this region. I came to vote after seeing the recent attacks on youths. If we do not vote, we do not have the right to expect development works from the elected representatives," she added.
The intense awareness programmes carried out by the Dakshina Kannada district administration in the past one month is another factor that encouraged many youths to exercise their franchise.
Robertha D'Silva, 22, an Air India ticket counter staff, said "I came to vote to encourage youths to participate in electoral process. We need to elect the right candidate instead of voting on party basis."
Colette Nazareth, 22, an LlB student, went to the polling booth to vote for city's development . "Other than mushrooming of apartments Mangalore has not seen any developmental works in the past five years. There is a need for educated persons to vote to bring in a change," Colette added.
