What happened to Kisangani? This city used to be one of the most buoyant and modern in the country. Today, it looks sleepy, decrepit and abandoned. Cars are scarce and bicycles are plenty; almost no economic activity in sight. Kisangani is strategically located because it constitutes a link between Eastern and Western Africa with an operational infrastructure (road that links the city to Uganda and Kenya, Congo River that links the city to Kinshasa). Why are local businesspeople not taking advantage of this asset and develop their city instead of looking to the incompetent and decadent government in Kinshasa to pull them out this self-inflicted misery?

Very beautiful city indeed.

I had the chance to visit it on many occasions in ear and mid 90s and once after the wars. if there was a city that suffered both human and infrastructures destructions is this city. and it economy greatly suffered than the cities in kivu.

All tho its still the city which would cost little to restore to former glory.. and if the textile factory can comeback to full strength that would be great.
Reason I say that is because it did not get mass migration like Goma. Bukavu. Kin and L'shi/

The loss of economic connections to Kinshasa (by the river) and to grand Kivu where it traded the most is what made it a slow recovery shall the traffic to Kin be intensified and a rail connection to Goma/Bukavu or Beni/Butembo exist Kisangani would comeback very fast.

I have to admi that Boyomais are very hard working . despite all the odds of wars and physical isolation from it trading regions or rest of the country it has managed to recover and move on and even to have economic activities.

I think of the colonial cities Kananga is the most disappoing given the facts that it never suffered wars since independence and has rail connectionto Katanga and access to Kin

Onne saddest thing to me is lack of national infrastructures connecting east to west and north to south. suc an extreme handicap that makes the country's internal trade almost inextistent. even wiyjoin same provinces such as Katanga, PO, Grand Kivu internal transport has died. its sad.
