Good news...which ends the monopoly of Kingfisher in the TCR-MAA route. With introduction of new flights, I guess the rates would come down, pushing more travelers to take flight to Chennai.

Two additional flight services are expected to be operated between Tuticorin and Chennai from October. The daily flights were likely to be operated by low-cost carrier SpiceJet daily — one in the morning and another in the evening, said J.P. Joe Villavarayar, former president, All India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, here on Monday.

Since Kingfisher Red had been operating the only flight service between these two places, the additional flight services would greatly benefit businessmen, industrialists, tourists and the general public, he said.

A SpiceJet team visited the Tuticorin airport to take stock of facilities available ahead of launching its services by operating a 60-seater aircraft.

“Infrastructure at the Vagaikulam airport, situated between Tuticorin and Tirunelveli, must be strengthened. Since the runway is only 1,350 metres long, big aircraft cannot be operated here. Hence, it should be extended to 2,500 metres. Besides, night landing facilities must also be provided,” Mr. Villavarayar said.

Need for integrated truck terminal in Tuticorin

Tuticorin: Since movement of trucks is on the rise, the need to establish an integrated truck terminal in Tuticorin is essential.

With hectic activities of export and import, these heavy vehicles play a key role in transporting large quantities of consignments to various destinations and bringing consignments to Tuticorin.

With loading and unloading of goods, bypass roads, which house a large number of warehouses, witness chaos.

As drivers of these vehicles find no place to park, bypass road witnesses haphazard parking of vehicles leading to accidents. Hence, the All India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tuticorin, stressed the need for an exclusive truck terminal for the benefit of operators. A proposal had been forwarded to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and the Transport Minister, J.P. Joe Villavarayar, former president of AICCI, Tuticorin, said here on Sunday.

More than 100 warehouses are housed on a 10-lakh square feet distance here. Besides 150 Customs House agents are available here. On an average, more than 6,000 trucks, including inbound vehicles, are operating here.

“The haphazard parking of such vehicles is certainly an impediment to road users. Once the government gives sanction for constructing a terminal, accidents on bypass road can be reduced. The problem of traffic congestion will also be solved,” he said.

About 100 to 150 acres of land is required to facilitate all essential needs of the truck drivers. Facilities with workshop for overhauling the vehicles, spare parts, accommodation for drivers and others could be made available. He indicated that lands at the intersection of the East Coast Road and NH – 45 B would be the suitable site for augmenting such facilities.

Since it is located on the outskirts of the city, it would be a conducive environment for parking these vehicles.

The investors were prepared to bring about such facilities but the government should consider these shortcomings and chalk out a plan for land acquisition, he said and added that integrated truck terminals are being made operational in Hyderabad and Goa.

Very glad to see this news...

Jyas, as you rightly said the prices will become very competitive and good for the people.

Hopefully they get night navigation facility certified, then a night flight starting at probably after 8 PM from Chennai would be major hit, and a morning flight from Tuticorin at 5-6 am would be also great.

We need flights from Bangalore and Kovai also, a 60-seater flight from these 2 places will have a good patronage..

Definitely we will see more operators coming to Tuticorin and more destinations will be address...

Sometime back AirIndia was having proposals to buy smaller flights to serve the smaller cities... so lets expect something from Air India as well...

They were all the while talking about having the same in the bypass road and now they have moved beyond the bypass road... dont know if it is because of lack of space in bypass road ? The number of warehouses in the bypass must have doubled over the last 5 years... There are many under construction, giving indication that non-coal cargo volume is set to grow...

Yes, I guess its lack of availability of land. During my last visit, I was able to notice lots of activities/construction going around the bye-pass road. So its very difficult to find large acres of land for an integrated truck terminal.

Chamber for berthing of ferry vessel at old port

Tuticorin: Considering the convenience of passengers, the authorities concerned should contemplate berthing the ferry vessel, which is being operated between Tuticorin and Colombo, at the old port of Tuticorin.

Since the new port is far off, passengers have to spend money extraordinarily on transportation by cabs and autorickshaws.

Tuticorin could certainly witness further developments if the cruise vessel was berthed at the old port, which is located at the heart of the city, T. Johnson, president, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tuticorin, said.

Initially, draft at the old port should be deepened to accommodate the vessel. Except for trans-shipment by coastal sail vessels to Colombo and other countries, the old port is not active. Additional infrastructure should also be augmented at the old port.

It could serve as a platform to attract a series of shopping malls on beach road, where the old port is stationed.

Based on built-on-transfer mode, stationary restaurants could be made available at the old port. If the vessel was berthed here, the stakeholders could possibly bring up floating restaurants too. With a variety of options in store, a large number of tourists could be attracted.

Besides, the hotel industry could also rely on such developments to expand their business. The Chamber has also consulted the Chairman of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, A. Subbiah, with regard to berthing of the passenger ferry vessel at the old port.

Citing advantages of the proposed changes, Mr. Johnson said the Sri Lankan passengers could get an easy access to the township by means of transport within five to 10 minutes. They could also get to the city on foot since it is only a walking distance.

It would be convenient for them to board lodges to accommodate themselves. The railway station of Tuticorin is located at a stone's throw from the old port.

Brillant suggestion... however the old port draft is only 3m whereas Scottia Prince requires a draft 5.6m.....quite a task but a great idea, if implemented as they said the whole beach area would receive a major facelift...

BTW the beach road is not the same earlier... the banks over there have got new buildings or building their new ones...the road looks better....

I am also excited about the proposal of the footpath that is going to come up along the beach road in the port limits, well they should have a walking/jogging track instead of a concrete footpath...

In Google earth if you use the feature for viewing past images, then the development along the bypass is much evident... some of the container and timber yards on the west sode of the road looks to extend inside in the range of 500m to 1 km from the road.. the latest pictures in google earth is of 2009, so much more development would have occured in these areas after that...

The only area which is not so occupied is from Sterlite to Madurai Junction, but this will develop soon once we have the 2nd container terminal...
