Mounted sensors to allow JR East to screen for safety using in-service trains
Quote:
TOKYO -- JR East, the main railway operator in eastern Japan, will use big-data analysis to unearth troubles with rails and aerial wiring more quickly, with the aim of reducing the need to delay or suspend service.

High-precision sensors and cameras mounted on trains the company runs will collect enormous amounts of information while the trains are in operation, such as checking for rail deformation or detecting missing bolts that anchor rails and ties.

The data will be used with existing data and visual observations by on-site inspectors to enable the company to understand how anomalies on train lines change from day to day and predict where future troubles will originate. With this information, JR East will be able to more accurately determine where repairs and maintenance are necessary.

Data collection on the Chuo Line began in April, and sensors were also mounted on new trains on the Yamanote Line that began test runs in May. The program will be expanded to the Keihin-Tohoku Line by this fall and tests may be conducted on regional lines such as the Tohoku Main Line starting in fiscal 2016. JR East hopes to create a fully operational safety inspection system by fiscal 2018.

New trains on the Yamanote Line will also be equipped with systems to study power lines and support poles. Accelerometers will be placed on pantographs that contact power lines, and a warning will be sounded if anomalies arise. Sensors with communication functions will be placed at the connection point between the power lines and poles and will transmit data about temperatures and tension in the lines via trains passing nearby.

Until now, rails and aerial wiring have had to be inspected manually by on-site personnel, who rode dedicated inspection trains about once every three months. Using operating trains to collect needed data will make it easier to conduct repairs at night when trains are not running, in addition to making it easier to understand the status of areas difficult for inspectors to see, such as inside tunnels and on bridges.
