I cant believe how deeply this news has affected me. Must be cause he was such an allround good bloke. His work was original and will live on. I think the forums have lost a certain feeling of 'expectation' of his next project. Just look at the furore when a certain poster tried to suggest he stop posting his 'illegal' (in his words) photos. That poster never came back after the lashing we gave him.

For what its worth, searching for news on the indident this morning I found this 'Base Jumping community site'

They have a page dedicated to all those lost whilst undertaking their passion:

http://www.splatula.com/bfl/

I dont know if its appropriate right now, but its there for his friends and loved ones to add his name and picture so that he remains in the book of Basejumping history forever.

Quite apart from inventing the technology to teleport himself to the top of skyscrapers, he taught us the joy of long exposure photography.

Starbust lights and eerie blanket skies - just fantastic.

We should all be out there, snapping - and waiting...

RIP downfallen! Some people are born to tread a different path fearlessly, he was obviously such a person.

What terrible news. Great contributor to this site and an incredible photographer, he will be missed.

I had a picture Downfallen took of me at the top of the Broadgate tower as my desktop for a long time (it would still be there if our new IT system allowed it) and people were always interested in it, and were wowed by his other work. Wish he had put a book together, his work deserves a wider audience than us

There is tons of great vids and stills on his face book page.... I wont post a link but if you can find it its well worth viewing.

Incidently in james's video above the last jump you see is I believe where he tragically lost his life.

wow. That's all there is to say. I thought he just took photos. Nope - he jumped off the darn things as well. What a rush that must have been, the higher the risk, the bigger the buzz.

Condolences to his family, friends and everyone who knew him

Unlike the majority of us will achieve, he has left a truly inspirational mark on the world

Many, many thanks for taking the time to post these links.

I'm guessing I'm not alone in having just committed every image to my hard drive for posterity. I don't think I'm overdramatising things to say that upon reflection I think we've just lost one of the best urban photographers of a generation, if not ever.

That has put a real dampener on Xmas. I met him in late January 2008 after the Broadgate tower visit. We spent around an hour talking in the pub and knocking down beers. He related to me about his trip to Batersea power station where his friend got caught by security and he had to hide for eight hours in a cramped space while his friend got to sit in a warm office. He would never carry anything even as harmless as a screwdriver on those illicit visits in case the police could accuse him of criminal activity. One time he scaled a wall with a member of the British special forces who couldn't keep up with him and had to back out. My last PM to him was to alert him about a film about the tight rope walk between the twin towers of the World Trade Center in the early seventies-of course he had already seen it.
He was also a qualified doctor with a very bright career ahead of him. He wouldn't appear in group photos for obvious reasons so we don't have any unmasked ones to post sadly. If we could find out where his family are I think we should all sign a letter of apreciation online and then send them a letter, although this thread is in itself a glowing tribute.
Very sad news. My thoughts are with his family.

This was one of his favourite jumps from over the years, the Eiger Mushroom jump.
