One Nine Elms

I'm not sure if this has already been discussed. I live in St George Wharf and we've just recieved a leaflet though our letter boxes about another new project for the area.

This time the ugly Market Towers site is up for redevelopment. There will be a public exhibition on the 17th Sept where proposals will be on display. They also have a website if you can't make the exhibition.
The developers say it is a chance to create an iconic new building of the highest architectural quality (the rough drawings show at least one tower) that will act as a gateway to the proposed 'liner park' towards Battersea. We are told to expect new homes, jobs and local amenities.

Looks like we will be getting quite a cluster of towers here in the coming years, St George Tower, The Bondway site, Vauxhall round-about, Sainsburys Nine Elms.. (which you can still comment on here) I'm sure I''ve heard of others but still its quite a list!

^ Not just a lovely area, a lovely existing building too! They should stop this...

*Edit* Ah wait, no actually the nice building is being retainied. The part they will destroy is ugly and disposable.

Good grief! That's a Rogers Stirk Harbour designed building?! Where have their standards gone? By the look of it their creative flair has been chased out of them by Prince Charles, EH, the Arabs and Boris Johnson!

Yep. If you're going to build something that fits in, you might as well go the whole hog and have Quinlan Terry whip up something really beautiful. If you're instructing Rogers, on the other hand, you'd better hope for something dramatic and quirky. This proposal just looks bland and mediocre.

This project has been floating around for a few years so it seems doubtful that it will happen so I don't think theres cause for concern just yet.

I hope that Rogers design for Berkley Hotel is dead. The sight of it made me fall out of love with Richard Roger's buildings. Although after checking it turns out its an Ivan Harbour design so Rogers is off the hook.

One Nine Elms, Vauxhall - Market Towers replacement

More details released today on the plans to demolish market towers and replace with two new towers. The City Tower (East) will be around 200m (58 storeys) and the River Tower (West) will be around 160m (47 storeys).

Current Market Towers

In the second image you can see the St George Tower.

Now they are some pleasing towers. I like the stepped nature and they seem to compliment St George quite well.

I agree. That's the best proposal we've seen in ages.

They also work well with the street and I just noticed the Skybridge!

Worthy of note, the towers are mixed use. Hotel, Offices, Homes and the Skybridge is going to be the new home of the club that occupies the low rise part of Market Towers.

Wow, those look great! Fantastic heights too, we could get a great cluster here. Seeing those three towers together reminds me a bit of the eventual 'Shanghai supertall trio' in the Pudong district with Jin Mao, Shanghai WFC and Shanghai Tower, which will have the same 'stepped' concept, but obviously on a larger scale...! Both trios should look good from their respective rivers, too.
