Tokyo received 60 votes to Istanbul’s 36 in the final round, with Madrid having been eliminated in the first round after losing a tie-breaker with Istanbul. Tokyo, which also bid for the 2016 Olympic Games, previously hosted the Games in 1964.

Tokyo presented a very strong technical bid from the outset – and it needed to in competition with two such high-calibre bids from Istanbul and Madrid. All three cities were capable of staging excellent Games in 2020, but in the end it was Tokyo’s bid that resonated the most with the IOC membership, inviting us to “discover tomorrow” by delivering a well-organized and safe Games that will reinforce the Olympic values while demonstrating the benefits of sport to a new generation.

RESULTS:

Round 1
Tokyo: 42
Istanbul: 26*
Madrid: 26*

Round 1 tie-breaker
Istanbul: 49 - moves on to Round 2 of voting against Tokyo
Madrid: 45
Round 2
Tokyo: 60 - Awarded the 2020 Summer Olympic Games!
Istanbul: 36

It isn't within the realm of impossibility. But the thing is, the Philippines doesn't have a strong sporting culture compared to other nations that have hosted the Olympics. The IOC takes that into account when choosing a host city. Now, if only singing, dancing, and acting were Olympic sports, then maybe, just maybe, the Philippines can win a bid to host the Olympic Games!

On the other hand, I wished some other Japanese city placed a bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games other than Tokyo. Osaka would've been nice.

How about politicians acting out?

And by the way, how can the Philippines cultivate a strong sporting culture, especially that we are fond of basketball, boxing, billiards, rowing, and running?

Develop dedicated sporting academies with a vast and comprehensive feeder system, scout and seek out potential young talents, have adequate training facilities and capable coaches and staff, and active participation (but not meddling in) and promotion by the government and private sector.

CONGRATS but in an Earthquake, Tsunami, and Radiation Zone but then again, Turkey is next to Syria. Japan, a safer bet.

How about recruiting the Badjaos as our swimmers and divers?

Or what about Manny Pacquiao as the Philippine coach for Boxing? Maybe Jaworski for basketball (or even bring in the Philippine Azkals too to Olympic competitions)?

As far as athletes go, they shouldn't be "recruited" just because an Olympiad is coming up, they should be honed, molded, and trained from early childhood. Hence the need for a strong feeder system (think assembly line) for specific and targeted sport disciplines.

Also, for an archipelagic nation, with water all around, I'm amazed our sporting strength isn't in water sports. Like swimming, diving, rowing, canoeing/kayaking, and sailing.

Japan should be more concerned with that leaking nuclear power plant than the Olympics right now! All it takes is another earthquake or tsunami near that crippled power plant and then what... Anyway I like Japan and the people.

Just like what China is doing for its young athletes! Perhaps we can borrow their system and formulate one that we can build and develop as our own for the nation. Why not start cultivating interests in swimming, diving, canoeing, and sailing? Heck, we can improve our sailing capabilities and work our way towards competing in the Louis Vuitton Sailing Cup.

Most communist/former communist nations (the former Soviet Union/Eastern European Bloc Nations/Cuba and Mainland China) have state-sponsored sporting programs, while those in capitalist/democratic nations have private sector-sponsored support of their athletes.

Pwede... Kaso, sino naman kaya ang magiging Pangulo by that time? Let me do a rough time frame...

2016: Presidential Elections
2017: Next IOC Bid Meeting
2019: Midterm (Congressional) Elections
2022: Presidential Elections
2024: Summer Olympics

Do you think may chance ba tayo to properly plan the Olympics with that time frame?

Perhaps with all that time, we can establish strong athletics programs that focus on building up potential talent that can participate in the Olympics often and build our professional sporting associations up to world standards... I mean, the road may not be easy, but, we need to build a sense of discipline and teamwork to truly build the Philippines as a worthy place to hold the Olympic games.
