Are there many for a 5 million city?
In fact there are about 25 orthodox cathedrals (including ones in monasteries and former independent towns that became parts of the city). About 5 were demolished in Soviet times (Petersburg was relatively lucky in that respect).

Not much changed since that time. They dug out the foundation and found out that it's mostly preserved. Then the foundation was officially regarded as a piece of heritage that made legally impossible any construction at this place besides reconstruction of the cathedral.
The plans for the reconstruction remain pretty solid but works still didn't start. Economic situation doesn't help of course.

Have these 'revenue houses' been transformed into residential apartment buildings now? They are very handsome and in excellent condition.

Of course they have been, mostly.
Their interior condition, however, is not always great. Most of them have undergone division into 'kommunalkas' (communal apartments) in early Soviet times and rather barbaric 'capital renovation' in 1960s when many valuable pieces of interior were lost.
