I thought the first Autobahns were opened more than 80 years ago and highways already existed earlier

It seems that way, and it sucks. Panoramio photos were frequently of better quality than Street View and taken from positions that Street View doesn't get.

Kako da ne? No, it's not well understood in English, but we say the same in Slovenian (redko kdo). I guess there're some more people, but I don't see them around any more.

Google seems to be tinkering around a platform to integrate user pics on Google Maps. They tried that with Picasa before. Now they have this Google Photo thing that, when you take a cell phone pic, Google asks you to tag it and post it publicly. I disabled it (also keep my pics on Dropbox, together with other files).

Google has some amazing products and services, and they are almost all free! That is great! However, Google do play badly when it tries to capture the market and can't (such as the Google+ fiasco).

-----------------------------------------------

I booked a trip for a business interview in Bergen 1-3 March. I will know immediately if I'm hired or not. If I am hired, I will move there in July. It's a 4-year research contract, after which I still want to find a (then) senior position in Netherlands so I can settle here for the long term.

Bergen rental market is quite flattened: the price difference between good and just-above-okay 1- or 2-bedroom flats is small. In other words, if I wanted to save money by living in a smaller flat, savings would be small in terms of money, for a big loss of space/quality. It is like plenty of 1-2br rentals on 50-60 m² range for NOK 12000-15000.

If I move there, I'd say goodbye to cycling, there are not cycling network to speak of in Bergen. On the other hand, there are amazing places within a day-trip reach by car! Fjords, waterfalls, barren islands, glacial-era plateaus (I'm not sure their exact name in English for formations like Hardangervidda).

Storm Hits the Northern Baltic Sea

A heavy winter storm hit the northern Baltic Sea last night, and caused some trouble to the ferries. The maximum wind speed at gusts was about 32 m/s. The significant wave height was about 8 meters, and the highest individual wave measured was 14.4 meters. The previous such a storm occurred in 2004.

M/s Viking Grace hit the quay at mooring in the port of Maarianhamina at Åland Islands on Wednesday afternoon. Minor damages only. The radar antenna of m/s Tallink Romantika on route Stockholm-Riga got loose and broke one of the front windows on 6th deck. Some water leaked to the cabins on the 5th deck, and passangers were moved to other cabins. M/s Amorella and m/s Mariella were not able to make their regular stops at Åland Islands at night.

Certain car ferry departures between the ports on Åland Islands are canceled today.

No person injuries reported. Two horses arriving at Stockholm on m/s Silja Symphony were reported to be in a bad condition.

Meanwhile Norway escaped a significant storm surge. The storm surge along the west coast of Southern Norway was overestimated by as much as 250 cm.

So apparently Europe is getting a very cold winter this year.. which is the opposite in Toronto. I've seen a bunch of pics of Greece and Croatia with snow, which is very unusual. Meanwhile Toronto has above 0 degree days for every day except two in the 2 week forecast. The city has no snow cover right now! We got a lot of snow in December actually, but that seems to be gone now. Looks like rain for most of January.

It reminds me of when I was in Copenhagen in October of 2015. It was 4 degrees one day, and 21 in Toronto.. The locals had a good laugh when they were told that it was significantly warmer in Canada, especially since Copenhagen's climate is pretty similar to Toronto from my understanding.

I think that Copenhagen is considerably milder than Toronto, rarely particuarily warm or cold.

Edit:

Wikipedia tells me that the average high in Copenhagen in July, the warmest month, is 21.2ºC, against an average low of 12.9ºC. January has the coldest average high, 2.5ºC, however the coldest average low is that of February at -1.9ºC (versus -1.7ºC in January).

Copenhagen is surrounded by bodies of water that generally don't freeze over. This results in a more moderate climate with fewer extremes. This is also reflected in the winter temperature extremes, the record low in Copenhagen is -18 while in Toronto it is much lower at -33. The number of snowy days in Toronto is also twice that of Copenhagen.

Global warming will probably eliminate freeze-overs on the Great Lakes by 2040.

Not in Spain. However the Ebro valley has been covered in fog for most of December, resulting in a colder month than normal in the area.

Meanwhile forecasts have gone crazy, they are predicting a low of -23ºC for Sabiñanigo next Wednesday .
