Celebration because all 8 towers have topped out!

Quote:
December 13, 2016--Tarrytown--Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the New NY Bridge has reached a major milestone with the topping off of the eight main span towers, and with the final concrete pour completed this week. The New NY Bridge is on track to open in 2018 and on budget at $3.98 billion. Additionally, 90 percent of support structures on the project are installed, including the fabrication and placement of 126 steel girders sections. To date, 3,000 roadway panels have been installed to connect the Rockland and Westchester shorelines up to the iconic main span, taking one of the largest active bridge projects in the nation one step closer to completion. Looking at the webcam, the northern span is almost completed. The deck seems all put in place, with only some cables lef to install.

The bridge is going cashless when they switch to the new spans, correct?

Can't wait to see all of the special event combination lighting effects the Thruway Authority comes up with to light up the Hudson. The photos earlier with only some of the causeway support structures lit up were beautiful!

I had no idea the bridge is already cashless as well. Incredible progress from the 'hold your breath' bridge of the 50s.

Are they done using the "West Coast lifter"? I see it's back to good way away from the bridge right now and don't see where there's much more it can be used for.

Probably not. If you look at the first picture in the above post you'll notice that the approach span for cable stay bridge closest to the old bridge is not complete.

The old bridge has to be demolished before the approach span can be built.

Would they also use the West Coast Lifter in the demolition of the old span? Kind of like the segmental deconstruction of the old Oakland-Bay bridge, taking each section down, towing it away, and scrapping it elsewhere.

Well you are partially correct, the first half of the bridge is almost complete. The 2nd side can't be completed until after the first side opens and they can demolish part of the existing bridge. It's going to be quite a while before the entire project is completed.

the first span is receiving the finishing touches. LED streetlights have been installed, and a protective barrier is rising along the two sides of the roadway.
Its fascinating looking at the earthcam photos at night - you get to look at two different eras right next to each other.
