Terrorism in Turkey and Belgium pulled those passenger numbers down by a lot. Economic contraction in Norway and Brazil also contributed to decline of traffic in those countries.

That's great news for BCN. Looks like it will be very close between it and YYZ for 2016. Is the strong growth due to Europeans steering clear of places like Morocco and Tunisia?

Probably, plus the strong paced Spanish recovery. Almost all airports in Spain grew by decent figures. Here are the Top 5:

Madrid: 50,420, 583 (+7.7%)
Barcelona: 44,154,693 (+11.2%)
Palma de Mallorca: 26,253,882 (+10.6%)
Malaga: 16,672,776 (+15.7%)
Alicante: 12,344,945 (+16.7%)

If high speed rail would have not expanded as much as it did after 2000, both Madrid and Barcelona would have had a few million more passengers.

EDIT: Ok, Adevahi already posted the full list, all airports are listed there.

Nice to see Madrid surpass the 50 million figure for the first time since 2008. Maybe this year it will be able to beat 2007's record of 52 million passenger visits.

Very influenced by this fact. Tourism in Tunisia and Morocco use to be beach tourism. Let's see the growth of the big and medium-size spanish airports according with the fact that their are in the coast or not (in bold and underlined the ones next to the coast)

Alicante 16,73
Málaga 15,75
Tenerife Sur 14,86
Valencia 14,72
Ibiza 14,50
Gran Canaria 13,80
Fuerteventura 12,92
Barcelona 11,19
Menorca 10,84
Tenerife Norte 10,58
Mallorca 10,57

Santiago 9,33
Lanzarote 9,06
Madrid 7,68
Sevilla 7,32
Bilbao 7,26 (it is in the coast but doesn't receive this kind of tourism).

Airports which grow more are in the coast. Airports which doesn't are not.

Totally true, I don't have the data for all the airports, but in Sevilla (my hometown) SVQ had an increase of 1.4% of spanish passengers, and a 15.1% increase with international ones. Sevilla has several high speed rail connections but only with spanish cities.

You are assuming Moroccan tourism declined but it didn't!! The country is quite peaceful with a good economic growth, and despite the fact people are usually misinformed and tend to mix everything tourism statistics didn't change drastically. The country didn't have any issues similar to Tunisia's nor any other in MENA

A simple 'no' to my question would have sufficed and I'm not sure what the USA has to do with anything.

What's behind the Spanish recovery? A stronger economy in much of the EU?

I showed you the ranking of most dangerous countries in the world to prove the point, and it shows Morocco being more safe than what's considered as a safe western country like the USA (but despite that there is less crime in Morocco, less terrorist attacks and much less shootings...)

The "muslim" world is quite heterogenous and the risks in the Emirates or Morocco where the states are functionnal and all public services work, are definitely not the same as in failed states like Irak or Libya or in countries where the public services were destabilised by the uprisings like Egypt or Tunisia or even Turkey, where the recent jailing of thousands of public servants may have created gaps in the security services...
Sadly this mixing up of everything is quite common whenever we speak about MENA.

I personally think it's because of the turmoil in both Turkey & Egypt. Shalm El Sheik was an extremely popular destination for U.K holiday makers and since the Metrojet disaster all flights have been and still are suspended. Turkey remains still popular but I think with all the terrorist attacks, bombings etc... More and more U.K holiday makers are avoiding Turkey & Egypt at the minute. Spain is obviously seeing the benefits as it's classed as a much safer option, shorter flight and good climate!
