Ceremony marks start of expansion project at LAX international terminal [Updated]

L.A. city leaders will gather at LAX Monday morning for a ceremony to mark the start of a $1.26-billion expansion-and-refurbishment project at the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

The work is expected to be completed by mid-2013 and will add two concourses and nine new gates for the next generation of large commercial planes. It also will add 1 million square feet for ticket counters, security checkpoints, passenger lounges and expanded customs and immigration facilities.

Stores and restaurants will occupy a central area.

Airport officials said the building project will be the most expensive the city has ever undertaken and is expected to employ about 4,000 construction workers. The Bradley terminal has not undergone major improvements since the 1984 Summer Olympics.

The aging airport has often received poor-to-average marks in surveys of passengers and airlines.

Among those scheduled to attend the 10 a.m. ceremony are Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and council members Bill Rosendahl, Janice Hahn and Tom LaBonge.

[Updated at 10:20 a.m.: A previous version of this post stated the project's cost was $1.26 million. It is $1.26 billion.]

Looks fantastic and a hell of a lot better than the current facilities. Having passed through LAX myself i found it a horrible airport and think that this new development will be a great asset to the LA area. And greatly improve the travel experience for the visitor and make the first impression of LA a whole lot better.

I love the fact that they are keeping that old ATC section building. Wicked design.

Here's the obligatory "groundbreaking" video-

http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktl...,6576749.story

And there's this article as well-

http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_14451096

"Barring unforeseen delays, Bradley West will be finishing up around the same time that I do," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is serving his second and final four-year term.

"Nothing will make me prouder than to stand here once again in 2013 at the grand opening of this project, a project that helped to revive the city's future and change the way the world thinks about visiting L.A."

Interesting design... and of course, good news for L.A

I found the arched bridge design (which I assumed is to facilitate pedestrian traffic between different terminals), is a little bit weird. Why don't they bury all those links underneath the runaway? Made it an underground passage, instead of that towering structures that will practically hovers above the terminal buildings..

The focus is also to improve passenger's experience.

What's better: Get off your plane from New York or Japan and be shuffled down a cramped underground tunnel.

OR, get off your plane an travel on an aerial glass bridge with visually stimulating panoramas of the whole airport and the Pacific Ocean.

LAX already has passenger tunnels everywhere.

Great job, LAX. Like Changi, the LAX layout is perfect for piecemeal expansions of an airport.

Can't wait to land it LAX when all the improvements have been made.
