Interesting to see both vessels are being moved to the Port of Sunderland today. Up Jasper is presently being towed by the tug, Strathdee and is just off Seaburn. Up Agate is due to leave this afternoon, unsure as to whether this will be under her own steam but suspect that this may be a tow out by Strathdee or one of the Tyne's tugs.

Couple of images of the ships taken 26th August 2016:

Virtu Ferries invests 75m in cutting-edge technology high-speed wave-piercer catamaran
Friday, 7 October 2016

Virtu Ferries has signed a newbuild contract with Incat Tasmania Pty. Ltd. to build a High Speed Wavepiercer Passenger/Vehicle Catamaran for their Malta Sicily route. Delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018, the company said in a statement today.

At 1,000 tons deadweight, the vessel will be the largest RoPax Catamaran ever built for operation in the Mediterranean, and the second largest in the world. The vessel will have a capacity of 900 passengers in four luxury lounges on two passenger decks and additional outside seating. The full span of the garage deck is designed to carry 23 heavy commercial trailers, equivalent to 490 truck lane meters or 167 cars. At a cruising speed of 38 knots, the Malta to Sicily crossing will, as with the Jean De La Valette, take approximately 90 minutes. Incat Tasmania are the world leaders in building large environmentally friendly high speed ferries with an emphasis on eco operations and fuel efficiency. Incat vessels, both commercial and military, are to be found in all four corners of the world.

Second Berth at DCT Gdansk Officially Opened

The second berth at the Polish Port of Gdansk’s Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) has been opened, expanding the country’s sole deep-sea terminal to become the largest container hub in the Baltic Sea.

Opened by terminal operator DCT, maritime ports consultant CH2M and Belgian contractor BESIX, Terminal 2 (T2) can now accommodate ultra-large vessels of the capacity exceeding 18,000 TEUs which will enter the Baltic Sea through the Danish Straits.

The new 650-meter-long and 17-meter-deep quay is expected to increase DCT’s annual handling capacity to up to 3 million TEUs.

T2 features 5 new ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes which arrived at the site in May this year. These cranes are said to be the largest port equipment in Poland, with a height of 82 meters.

In addition, terminal operations are supported by electrified rubber-tired gantry (eRTG) cranes.

“A key requirement of the project was to power the STS and eRTG cranes with electricity rather than diesel fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution,” CH2M said.

The construction of the new deepwater berth started in 2015.

Maersk containership runs aground in Southern Italy
JANUARY 10TH, 2017

9,000 teu containership Gustav Maersk grounded early this morning while transiting in the Strait of Messina, Southern Italy.

According to the local coast guard reported, the ship owned by Maersk departed from Rijeka, Croatia and was en route to Gioia Tauro in Italy when it suffered a mechanical failure and grounded in front of the village Torre Cavallo.

There was no oil spill or injuries to the crew reported, and the vessel was freed by three tugs from the ports of Milazzo and Messina.

Five hours later the vessel was free to sail to the port of Gioia Tauro with two tugs in assistance. An investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway by the coast guard and ship registry.
