Container
MSc in one step
the leadership

Mediterranean Shipping Company on the brink of world leadership. In terms of container transport, this year, MSC has increased its capacity by 22.7% to threaten the primacy of Maersk Line. The Italian-Swiss group has today a capacity of 1.83 million TEUs, the Danish (grew by "only" 4% over 2010) of 2.13 million. The third group in the world, the French CMA-CGM, the slot has increased by 17.4% to 1.21 million share. The international and for the first three places, however, should remain unchanged for some years.

Entered into force the new security procedures on goods entering the territory of the European Union

From January 1, entered into force the new security procedures on goods entering the EU territory. Before the shipments arrive in the area of Community customs offices will receive a statement, "data security" in order to develop a priori an "accurate" risk analysis. In some cases, customs may send the message "DO NOT LOAD" which has the effect of preventing the shipment of the goods at the port of departure. The obligation to submit in advance the "entry summary declarations, Ens"-involving the entire transport chain.
For the association of transport and logistics is an "epoch-making revolution" that put to work as customs of the 27 Member States. "Its launch, originally scheduled for the July 1, 2009 - he explains - was postponed for a year and a half. But now there are no more delays while Member States have declared that it is not ready yet and not all at the same starting level. The Italian customs since last July has made available to operators of electronic test environment to test new procedures. To date, however, there are still many critical aspects and not all ports and airports to the same degree of implementation. "
In October of this year, for example, the use of procedures at airports telematizzate went from 85% to 9% of the Veneto region of Lombardy, in the port we went from 99% to 24% of Liguria Emilia Romagna.
States such as Germany and the Netherlands have introduced transitional periods, respectively, one and four months during which the new procedures will not produce negative effects. The world association of Confetra (Anam, Anasped, Assologistica, Fedespedi) and the voluntary sector plane (Assoaeroporti, Assohandler, Ibar) applied to the Customs Agency to adopt the same behavior.
"In the case of zero tolerance by the Italian Customs - continued Confetra - the risk would be to visit all the goods accompanied by declarations where data security is lacking or incomplete, resulting in clogging of the operating ports and airports."
At Community level, all EU customs administrations have agreed on a grace period of six months, during which no penalties will be applied to the incompleteness of data security.
The association of logistics fear chaos if not there will be a trial free from sanctions.

SHIPPING
MEDITERRANEAN, THE DOMAIN
OF SPANISH

GENOA. The port of Valencia in 2010 has surpassed the four million TEUs and reinforces the primacy in the Mediterranean container handling. The airport has climbed the Spanish positions in the last ten years past Genoa, Barcelona, Algeciras and Gioia Tauro. "The strength of Valencia - explains Giordano Bruno Guerrini, secretary general of Cisco (Council of Intermodal Shipping Consultants) - is given by the diversification of customers. Algeciras has instead granted the choice of Maersk, which was its principal client, to move traffic in Tangier and Port Said. A similar situation is experiencing the Gioia Tauro "that actually has both Maersk and its terminal Contship engaged in the game of Tanger Med In all this, Valencia has rather good game, thanks to the diversification and the absence of a" monoculture "the port operators.

It seems a century has passed since, only ten years ago, the ports of Barcelona and Genoa were allies, together with that of Marseilles, under the symbol Intermed, to critical mass in Europe and undermine the primacy of the competitors in the Northern Range. In a few years, mainly thanks to the Italian port reform of 1994, the imbalance in favor of Rotterdam and other ports had been reduced: from 25-75% of total port traffic of containers entering and leaving the Old Continent, the gap was down to 40-60%. But at the turn of the century, around 2000, the growth of the southern ports was lost, also because of the first financial crisis of globalization, which in 1998 hit the Far East and Latin America.

Since then the picture has changed completely. Spain has replaced Italy as the locomotive of the port system and the two Mediterranean countries have stopped farming ambitions, began to compete for major international carriers and now, as the new financial crisis has separated them from the comparison with Northern Europe, they should look the other way, to North Africa, where they grow or new competitors are emerging, such as Tanger Med and Enfidha.

The Easy Spanish occurred in recent years is evident from the data. In 2000, the Italian port system enlivened 7.068 million TEUs (twenty feet equivalent unit, a unit equivalent to a 20-foot container), compared to 7.051 in Spain. The most important port in the Mediterranean was Gioia Tauro, with 2.65 million TEUs handled. Genoa was in third place, with 1.5 million between the two Italian ports were part of the various terminals of Bahia de Algeciras, located in a strategic position over the Strait of Gibraltar, with just over 2 million TEUs. In 2008 the Italian container had grown to 10.5 million TEUs, while Spain during the same period almost doubled to 13.3 million, mainly due to the development of transhipment and the boom of Valencia. This port has in fact stolen the scepter in Gioia Tauro, and in 2010 was more than 4 million TEUs handled. At the second port has risen Port Said, Egypt, and Algeciras and Gioia Tauro in 2010 have not reached the 3 million TEUs. Meanwhile, Genoa has been superseded by Barcelona in absolute terms, even if it maintains the primacy of the data if you factor out the transhipment traffic.

The difference between Italy and Spain in this period is given mainly from transhipment. In November last year a Eurispes study has predicted that between 2010 and 2015 the three hubs of Gioia Tauro, Taranto and Cagliari will grow by 13.5%, from 4.3 4.9 million TEUs. Last year, however, is still shut down: 5% in Calabria and Apulia by 26%. In Spain, thanks to transhipment, continues to grow Tarragona, where for two years by the terminal to DP World: from 44 000 TEU in 2000, the Catalan port has risen to more than 250 000 in 2010, an increase of almost 20% the previous year.
