That is an exception that confirm the rules.

Seriously, just take the last 40 major road widening projects in US: most have exceeded projected traffic.

Its the same with Rail , most projects exceed ridership projections , most come on or under budget and they add a massive amount of economic stimulus to a corridor or region depending on the region. The people of this part of NY were promised Rail for the last 20 years and to see it not be part of the project from the get go has enraged many. To claim this line would have low ridership would be ridiculous. It passes through densely populated areas along with job hubs and would linked over a dozen different transit lines and a few airports. Adding lanes doesn't seem to work much , you need to add Rail or Bus rapid in corridors....

The Tappan Zee is a stupid bridge to begin with. It was built at the widest point of the river and so far north so it could be out of reach of the Port Authority. Least they could do building the new bridge was be logical and add rail.

I wonder how much over budget this will go,,,as in Boston's big dig or the new bay bridge. Seems everyone has to get their sticky fingers in the pot on all these big projects.

Its already past 2 billion , so who knows....this project reeks of kickbacks and upstate/downstate political clashing....

It seems a lost opportunity to not plan for a rail in each direction. The bridge may be designed to last for 100 years (which seems like they're aiming pretty low, by the way... the Brooklyn Bridge is already 130+), but they're clearly not envisioning the future of travel if they're only designing for cars and buses to use the bridge over the next 100 years.

With Congestion getting worse along the Corridor , Rail is very much needed....politicians can't seem to get there heads out their asses , even though Rail was a very popular idea on both sides of the river. But the MTA seems to be pushing a I-287 Rail Corridor , so who knows.

New Tappan Zee construction starts

image hosted on flickr

The New NY Bridge will replace the overworked Tappan Zee in a few years. We compare it to the new SF #baybridge span at WIRED.com. by rregitano, on Flickr

Quote:
WHITE PLAINS — New York Gov. Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the actual building of the new Tappan Zee Bridge has begun.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Cuomo said “formal construction” began with the driving of piles that will be part of the bridge’s foundation.

For months, the site in the Hudson River has been busy with pre-construction activity. That includes dredging and building platforms.

The bridge is to replace the aging span that now connects Westchester and Rockland County. It’s expected to cost $3.9 billion.

Funding is not yet in place. The state is hoping that a federal loan will help limit the expected large hike in the current $5 toll.

Cuomo said some traffic should be on the new bridge by late 2016 and the entire project should be done by 2018.

I crossed the bridge yesterday on the way to Sleepy Hollow and counted 17 cranes (9 big ones and and 8 small ones) on barges doing something. In addition there are about 15 more barges with materials like sand, steel, spare parts and etc.

If this is not a start of construction then what else?
