Jetways @ BOG

Advertising can also be made on glass Jetways e.g. PTY Tocumen Intl Airport (Panama), DXB Dubai Intl.

I think they chose Metalic because of the cost of glass Jetways, anyways it is an investment for a brand new terminal which is the gateway from Colmbia to the world. According to the design I think they would have looked way better and prettier than the metalic jetways being installed.

I still don´t understand what´s the difference in security between glass and metallic jetways, people will run as fast as they can in the event of any emergency, if someone can post the link to the forum this topic was discussed please! thanks!!!

I think not all futuristic airports sport glass-based airports. Many of them use advanced building materials, spacious interior designs and energy-saving features.

It's common sense that glass jetway bridges look better and they probably do. The choice to have metallic jetways, although backed by security concerns, was probably influenced by costs and other factors that we don't really know yet. Maybe climate or something like that. Bogotá is pretty cold most days. Dunno if that may have been a factor...

Anyway all 9 jetways that should be operational by august have been installed. And they don't really look that bad. Maybe they change it in the future or maybe they would simply look great.

If you check how many airports has the more "beautiful" glass PLB's, not too many exist right now. There are plenty of excuses why an airport will pick metal vs. glass like weight, maintenance, cost, size, and safety.
I am not defending the reasons behind the decision to chose metal PLB's, but all aspects play a role and this is how they come up with the metal PLB's.

Perhaps we can also recall that Bogotá it's a tropical city located high on the mountains, making the effect of the sun rays -even in cloudy days- much more drastic (this depends on its location in the globe rather than its temperature, way below the yearly average of most cities and with maximums that don't even reach summer temperatures in other countries). Even with lack of wintertimes and with no temperatures below zero, the average is low; but this is not the reason for avoiding glass.

To make it simple, at its altitude and with the sun tracing its path always through "the middle line", inside a greenhouse (or a clear glass structure) is felt like a hot summer, even in any cloudy day. Solar radiation + glass in tropical high places is a combination to be avoided. In the tropics, the higher you are over the level of the sea, solar radiation effects are independent from current atmospheric conditions like clouds, rain, etc. (to a certain degree, of course).

As an example, if you live in Bogotá you may experience that, even with overcast skies, if you leave your car parked for a few hours in the open, when you enter is boiling hot while outside is just "nice" or coldish. Same effect could happen with a tunnel made out of clear glass. Aluminum instead (and opposite to clear glass) is the best to reflect sun rays and to try to keep the space inside at a manageable temperature.

As you see before, even if you are right regarding your statement of Bogotá as a "cold" city (checking yearly averages and having almost no seasons), what happens with glass obeys to quite the opposite. As you may know, the answer is provided by the principles of "solar architecture" and it depends on radiation rather than temperature.

Yes. I think AC has never used another type of aircraft on the route. It's a 767-300.

Well, that report is from them and ET Channel, both from the same conglomerate that also owns the most important newspaper in the country.

Other newspapers and TV networks have gotten access to the new building but not recently.

Important to say that CityTV is a private channel dedicated to the city of Bogotá, so they are always very aware of transportation issues and projects around the city.

Last friday TACA began flying from BOG to BSB (Brasilia). Four weekly frequencies that are very likely to become daily.

All jetway bridges can be seen, even some with their "transition zone" already decorated.
